What vault songs would be on a Parade Deluxe release

There seems to be a bit of a cross over of tracks that could go on a Parade Deluxe and a Sign of the times deluxe.

Such as All My Dreams, It'a
S A Wonderful Day, Teacher, Teacher, In A Large Room with No Lights.

I got Parade on record for Christmas so have been listening alot the last week or so and I've really been enjoying it.

What songs would go on a Parade deluxe?

I may be wrong here but I believe there are two versions in circulation. There was the version released on NPGMC which I presume is Splash '86, but I believe there was also an earlier version which was the basic recording before it was sent to Clare Fischer. Now you've mentioned it, I'm beginning to doubt myself. I may have to amend that. I'll check later to see if I have an unreleased early version.

Ah, got it. I think I've only heard one version, presumably the NPGMC one. If I remember correctly, someone on here believed he updated the mix and included new sound effects before it was officially released online?

You're right but the difference is so incredibly negligible. Probably something we don't know about could fit in that slot instead.

Good call. I'm sure there are a few unknown gems from the Parade era that can fill in nicely. Fingers crossed Parade Deluxe will unearth some surprises. wink

I really hope so. For what it's worth, they better put Call of the Wild, God is Everywhere, and Evolsidog on there as I am desperately wanting to hear them!

Parade (Super Deluxe):

[snip]

I think the Parade list is pretty good. In subsequent deluxes, I don't think we need repeat tracks just because they differ slightly. It's important to keep the version that is succinct with that time period. As an example, if "Splash" originated in 1985, then it likely belongs on a Parade deluxe set, and not SOTT. "Moonbeam Levels" was considered for other projects after 1982, but it ended up on 1999 where it belongs. Unless there were significant changes (e.g: "Bold Generation," "Can't Stop," "Irresistible Bitch," "Possessed"), then the earlier or more complete would be best.

Anyhoo, a lot of this depends on the existing quality of things. But yeah, ATWIAD and Parade deluxe really have to be next. I think ATWIAD gets overlooked a lot because it was almost like a filler album. Prince was over all things Purple Rain, and was formulating Under The Cherry Moon/Parade stuff (plus The Family and Mazarati projects). It deserves its own deluxe set, even if it's just three disks or something. The extendeds and b-sides are so great from that album. And any outtakes or alt versions, like the bass-y title track, or the earlier "Raspberry Beret" are good for the third disk. With the onset of The Family and then UTCM, there may not be quite as much viable material for ATWIAD to expand past 3 disks. Maaaaybe 4 at most. But still..it'd be nice.

As a note, "Raspberry Beret" dates earlier than ATWIAD, but it belongs on ATWIAD because that's when it saw the light of day. So an earlier version on that would be notable. But then, on the other tip, you have those Graffiti Bridge songs on 1999. I suppose I'm more worried about duplicates with only slight variations than the timeline (which is still a top priority).

PS I think the two Crystal Ball configs are unnecessary.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

.
If we do get ATWIAD I hope they consider sticking the entire Family album in it with Prince's vocal. Having said that, it would mean Nothing Compares 2 U getting released again which may not gel well with fans.

They tried to find Raspberry Beret to put the original on the 1999 SDE but couldn't find any trace of it. It would absolutely belong on there, imo.

I think ATWIAD probably has the least amount of potential material for an SDE. It was the shortest period between albums and judging by the 83/84 sessions book, he wasn't doing that much recording since he was prepping the tour, finishing A6's and the Family's records, and on the promo circuit for the movie (tho I suppose he didn't do a ton of promo because, well, Prince).

That's a shame. Do you know whether or not they looked for Strange Relationship? I would have loved to have heard the '82 version of that.

Strange Relationship would need to be on the PR SDE redux gig as it was recorded in early 83!

That sucks. I'd love to hear it, but maybe it was just him on the piano like Piano and a Microphone stuff? Maybe we'll never know.

I think you're right. A super deluxe would be too far reaching. But, a nice 3-disk set wouldn't hurt. A DVD of the show where "America" was taken from would be cool.

And it really was a short period. So many of those songs were done before or during the tour. It's really amazing to hear such a point of view on all the PR related material, but during that time you have him recording "Pop Life" (with two lead vocals acting as an echo to the other), the title track or even "Paisley Park." I guess it's because we think of most artists recording a record, touring, doing all the schtick around it, taking time off, then setting out to do another record. But with Prince recording all the time, there's so much overlap and cross pollenation. It really does floor me when I think about it.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Yeah, and the one that leaked with full Clare Fisher on it is pretty incredible to hear. When Wendy talked about how Clare works with counter melody - Prince sings right and Clare writes left, etc - you can really hear it on "New Position." I don't need a full Clare vs Prince record, but maybe add some of those elements in the deluxe somewhere. Possibly on the earlier version with "All My Dreams," etc.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Don't forget about the 1985 take of "Velvet Kitty Cat" which, if the cassette belonging to a former bandmember is any indication, was at least considered for use on an early configuration of Parade. It's drastically different from what was released on Purple Rain Deluxe. It sounds like he's channeling Jerry Lee Lewis or Little Richard.

To VaultCurator, doesn't "Feel U Up" belong on the Batman deluxe editions.I know the songs dates back to 82 but didn't get a official release until 89.

Hi Phase3,

I wanted to include all the tracks from Dream Factory, Camille and Crystal Ball, since that was the development journey of Sign O' The Times. Since Feel U Up was the only Camille song not to make the album and a Batman Super Deluxe was unlikely I decided to include it on the singles / B sides disc. wink

Thank you. I really hope they pull out all the stops when it comes to these two albums. Sign especially.

Cool. First I've heard of this one. Thanks for the info. I'll have to do a bit of research on it.

If you don't mind me asking did this band members tape just contain the one song, or was it part of a sequence?

It was simply used as a b-side. It wasn't anything inherent to that stream of music. It's on 1999 Deluxe where it belongs.

Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

The 84 to 87 period was always going to be the hardest to split out across 'deluxe' type albums as the content creation spanned multiple projects/ideas.

Personally, I think WB would miss a trick if they didn't use this phase to release 'lost albums' as opposed to multiple discs tied to previous releases.

Dream Factory, Camille and Crystal Ball could stand on their own feet. There is still plenty of material to fill vault discs in deluxe sets.

What is the absolute point of releasing Camille when every song on Camille has been released except one song that was included on Crystal Ball?

Marketing. Hardcore will buy it for Rebirth alone (it wasn't on CB, are you thinking of Good Love?)

Casuals won't know where the other tracks are pulled from. It's a mystery that can be spun. It's commercial; Good Love, Shockadelica and Strange Relationship would be strong singles to promote it.

Coupled with an extra disc of missing Camille tracks, alt mixes and possibly regular vocal versions, we'll lap it up.

I think they meant that Rebirth was on Crystal Ball (1986) but was the only Camille track to never be officially released.

Crystal Ball is cool for what it is, but given how much it shares with SOTT, I'd rather see the 86-87 material broken up differently. I'd love a set including Dream Factory, Camille, The Black Album, and a disc of relevant outtakes (like "The Ball" and "Joy In Repetition"). Even better if everything is remastered to be consistent in volume and quality, so that fans can put together Crystal Ball on their own if they so desire.

Of course, if they decided to release Crystal Ball in addition to the aforementioned albums, I'd probably still buy it anyway lol

That got me thinking. What about a new website that allows you to click on a playlist that configures the tracks to match a particular project? You could click for 'Camille' and it configures. Click for 'Crystal Ball' and you see the tracks visually reconfigure. Again for Dream Factory.

That would be a novel way of dealing with the cross overs.
