In regard to whether I'd feel 'double dipped' depends on the volume of new content and the price point. Of course we all agree the 1999 approach is superior, but does it justify the three times price jump?

Trust me there will be Purple Rain albums forever. Think Sgt. Pepper

Sgt. Pepper has only been remixed and re-released once.

2009 was the entire Beatles catalog.

At this point you already boxed all the songs and the mixes etc... The thing I am looking for are what the others did in Purple Rain, at this point things like the Time, Apollonia 6, Jill and also Vanity 6, all this stuff being out of print and outdated and never ever touched seems like a big waste to me. I mean I know its not going to gain fans, but I am pretty sure a good portion of the loyal followers would buy a remastered Apollonia 6 or Jill Jones in a second.

Depends on how it's done

I don't think it's double dipping.
It would be cool if they put together a set that would have followed the script music/storyline

Personslly, I was more than happy with the Purple Rain special edition but now that we’ve been spoiled by what they’ve done with 1999, I feel retrospectively disappointed with Purple Rain and want a reissue in a few years. So who here would welcome a pocket killer like that in a few years? What should be added to it?

Absolutely not, first off, what was released as the deluxe edition and what would be released as a super deluxe edition would be two very different things. They are mutually exclusive from one another. Secondly, I do not believe time comes into play when we are talking about Purple Rain. From a mass appeal perspective, Purple Rain is the pinnacle of Prince, the pinnacle of sales, and the pinnacle of dempgraphics. Purple Rain = money, lots of money.

CD1 PR remaster

CD2 PR including all songs in their non truncated form, Darling Nikki, Beautiful Ones, etc, all had extra verses.

CD3-5 Vault material recorded during that time

CD6-8 Prince vocal version of Apollonia 6, Ice Cream Castle and The Glamorous Life albums.

CD9 Remastered First Avenue benefit concert

DVD/BluRay - Video of benefit concert

10 discs total, very doable considering the scope of that time period.

Yes, b/c the remaster from 2017 was terrible and too many vault tracks were badly sourced.

Shit, I'd buy it just for a proper remaster of the album. Anything else is gravy.

It's too soon now, but there will no doubt be one in a few years.

.

The reissue was hardly definitive or exhaustive, and it's not like any other artist only has one reissue per album. Expect another 1999 even in the future, why not.

The piont of updating and reissuing PRD wouldn't be simply to make more money. It would be to correct all of the mistakes of the first release (e.g. use the master tapes rather than cassettes, expand the song selection, etc.).

In other words, the motivation of those reissuing it wouldn't be a blatant money grab. Their motivation would be to genuinely improve a seriously flawed product and provide fans a better experience.

And that's why I'd be okay with a reissue of PRD.

I do wonder how many attempts before the org concedes the original CDs sounded fine in the first place.

PR is undoutedly one of his best albums, if not THE best, but it's also the one I play the least.

I wore that bitch out in spring and summer of 84 and honestly can't remember the last time I put it on. When the CD age started, it was one of the last discs I picked up. It's great, I'm just tired of it and especially the title track that every news story about Prince or documentary feels obligated to play.

It's Dark Side of the Moon, Freebird, Satisfaction, Stairway to Heaven levels of self parody at this point. This man wrote thousands of songs and I'm not interested in hearing the same 10 ones played in perpetuity for the rest of my natural life.

Wait 5 years and do a proper 40th Anniversary Super Deluxe package.

Include new songs that were not available/available in high quality back in 2017. Stuff like 17 Days extended, Wednesday, WDC with bassline. And a separate disc of The Time/Apollonia 6/Dez Dickerson songs. Add a different concert than Syracuse.

All depends on whatever other non-Purple Rain Album stuff they release before then. Stuff like the First Avenue Minnesota Dance concert, or the Birthday concert if they do that.

I personally am a bit burned out from the Purple era. PR Deluxe, P&M, Originals and now 1999 Super Deluxe . . . almost all in that same 2-3 year period.

I'm looking forward to something else before returning to Purple Rain.

Extended version of "17 days" lol

That doesn't exist. The "7" B-Side Edit" thing was just a error.

Also, the 7" mix of Erotic City did HAVE the "Make Love Not War..." subtitle, but it was ignored cause they used The Hits/B-Sides for reference. It could happen to Escape, or other B-sides with the same issue.

Definitely double dipping. I have know interest. I'd prefer a new album of unreleased material particular songs that didn't make the cut on his 78 thru 96 releases

I'd purchase PR again only if the packaging is on par with 1999 Super Deluxe. Also include Dez's 'Modernaire', Appolonia 6, and the Time's music as they appeared in the movie. As additional bonus material for the BOX, I'd like to see the 2 disc Anniversary version of the movie included with music videos, concerts, etc. Extended liner notes and more photos are also a must!

If the packaging and booklet are as good as 1999...

If there is a whole 2nd disc of vault tracks...

If the 1st Ave show is included on DVD...

If they throw another unheard live show on CD...
If they do a better remaster...

If they include tracks from the movie from associated artists...
And include all the material available in the previous release.

6CD/2DVD

Then hell yes I'll buy it again. Bring it on!!!

after ATWIAD, Parade, SOTT & Lovesexy. wink

Modernaire, perhaps. For TT and A6 I still hope for a remaster with bonus tracks one day...

Also, the 1983 Time show was released by Wolfgangsvault some years back. WB could reclaim it.

I want deluxe The Time albums (and all the ass. artists of the era) too!

But if they double dip on PR anyway, may as well include all the tracks that were in the movie (along with everything else I mentioned above, notice I listed these LAST). wink biggrin

I’d be happy to buy a Super Deluxe PR at some stage, but I’d much rather the Estate cycle through the other albums from his classic period first. Maybe in 2024 for the 40th anniversary.

I'm sure there will be another, more "complete" version down the line...but I'm not in any hurry for it. Prince has so many albums that are better than PR that need a "Super Deluxe" treatment first.

I just hope that the cd (and cd players) will stay in existance for the upcoming 10 years, so we can have the super deluxes in cd format of the most important albums. Yes, I know, cd is old-fashioned, but hey, I grew up in the 80s and have witnessed the transition from LP to cd. The latter sounded much better to me in those days, especially with headphones. Streaming is OK, but it is just nice to have something physical, with booklets and stuff.
So, with a super deluxe version on cd/dvd each year, we could have For You to Lovesexy before 2030 🤓
