Very simply, its incredible. Up until this release I wasnt sure we would ever get anything this incredible and extensive. Pretty amazing that this isnt even 5% of what we could have coming to us in the future. Just, wow. Its still mind bending that he never intending on releasing these. One unique dude indeed. Bold Generation and Rearrange are cool but they both should be cut down to like the 3:30 minute range. Nice jams but they don’t go anywhere tbh. When i make playlists, i’ll edit them down so they don’t take up so much time. Too many good tracks here
No way. I want every second of every possible recording. Purple Music could go on forever and I would be up for it. (Insert something clever here) |

It is a shame that the 5 disc version is turning out to be hard to get. I hit up three different retailers in Los Angeles and none of them had it. Amoeba, one of the best record stores in the world, has it listed online for $75 (no thanks, saved me a trip). So I ordered it from Amazon but it won't come for another week. Did WB/the Estate seriously underestimate demand or is the demand for physical product just not there? So few people buy CDs anymore (honestly I only buy them for Prince) I guess it's going to be harder to get these kinds of things going forward. |

If they were in store, and high profile online, they could have capitalized on black friday. Oh, well...

I got a copy, but it was a struggle.
Originially I'd pre-ordered it through Amazon, but they weren't going to ship it until later this week. I was too impatient for that, so I called around to all the Barnes & Nobles in my area to find one that had a copy in stock.
According to the B&N website most of the stores near me were supposed to have copies in stock, but I've learned not to trust online inventories. That's why I was calling to confirm they they did indeed have them. In this case my distrust was justified --- most of the stores I called said they had zero, despite the fact that their website claimed they did.
I eventually found a store about 30 minutes away that said they had a bunch of copies. I hurried out there to learn that the woman was confused -- they had several copies of the simple 1999 reissue, but only one of the Super Deluxe set which had already been reserved by someone using the name "George Bush" (and therefore couldn't be sold to me). She was very apologetic.
She eventually located another B&N store that had a lone copy in stock, but it was an hour away in the opposite direction. I asked them to reserve it for me, which they did. I raced out there and when I got to the store they couldn't find it. My heart sunk. However, after about 10 minutes they found it. (The problem had been that the guy who I spoke to on the phonea nd who had set it aside wrote my last name on it, but the clerk who greeted me at the store and who was looking for it only looked under my first name and never bothered to check my last name.)

The mailperson was a tad late (it was busy...), I lacked a bit of sleep but I have no real complaints in that area. Pills and thrills and daffodils will kill... If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry. |

The Super Deluxe versions are becoming scarce in the UK. Especially on vinyl. I ordered the cd set from Amazon which arrived on the 30th. I had intended to buy the vinyl set after Xmas. However I had messages from purple friends in London saying that they were struggling to find copies. HMV has now sold out on its website & my local store in Devon cannot get more. I phone four other independent stores & they all had sold out or didn’t order any. They all could try & order one. One helpful assistant phoned me to say that they had spoken directly to the Warner rep & there is no more stock left & they are not pressing more. I then bought a copy from eBay at an inflated price. However I am pleased I did because the prices there are starting to sky rocket. Someone had seriously underestimated the demand for this. How can Warner run out of stock after 48 hours??? Warner never said this was a limited edition run. On one hand i’m pleased that it has sold well but by the looks of things it could’ve sold much more. I know several people who wanted to get it ‘sometime’ who will now be priced out. Also what a shame that new fans discovering this album for the first time through YouTube or wherever will not be able to purchase physical product. 😡 |

I agree entirely. It's a missed opportunity for larger sales and more people hearing the music.

From the January 2020 issue of UK music monthly Q Magazine, in "Q Reviews -> Reissues -> Also out...":
.
Multi-disc edition offers more purple pop classics.
.
Mixing slamming grooves with irresistible hooks, 1999 marked the start of Prince’s early-’80s imperial phase. Itwas also recorded during a creative burst that left dozens of demos gathering dust. This six-disc “Super Deluxe” edition rescues the treasure, including alternate mixes, a complete live concert and nearly two discs’ worth of unheard brilliance, not leastVagina’s daring, non-binary funk and pop gem Yah, You Know. Finally, Paisley Park’s crown jewels are on public display.

The January 2020 issue ("Take 272") of UK music monthly Uncut contains best-of lists, and "Reissues of the Year" has 1999 Deluxe at 20:
.
Prince’s 1982 album of liberating funk rock jams found him entering an intense purple patch. Hence this expanded edition was rich in top-quality unreleased tracks from his legendary vault: the taut, fiery riffage of “Rearrange”, the rousing “Bold Generation” and the semi-legendary “Moonbeam Levels”. And, of course, a song called “Vagina”.
