Not that I care for either of the mentioned artists, but I'm sure someone was saying the same about Prince in 1984.

He was right! Quite why there hasn't been more public outrage over it I don't understand, I simply cannot listen to commercial music radio it's just too damn repetitive and has been for years. If we switch off and stop buying such shit then things will be forced to improve! It must have been especially galling for someone as talented as Prince to see much lesser talented artists succeed so much based solely on promotion and mass commercial airplay. That said he could have helped himself more to show his talented side, his later releases (post Emancipation) left a lot to be desired, as all these 'recent' vault releases proved he was a lot more capable than he often showed us and the general public at large.

Prince shading people from the afterlife! Gotta love it! I don't argue with people about my opinions. Scram. I said what I said.

He wasn't wrong. Though, to be perfectly honest, until I saw the movie Yesterday, I had never even heard of Ed Sheeran. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

That’s not controversial unless you’re under 20.

Don't boo me off the stage...I like some of Ed Sheeran's work, particularly the duet "Perfect" with Beyonce...gives me chills. There is youtube video of both of them performing this song; Beyonce looks enraptured and the audience is as well. [Edited 10/26/19 11:52am]

I agree that radio will ram certain songs down our throat whether we like it or not. I used to like “Truth Hurts” by Lizzo the first 100 times I heard it. Now it’s grating on my ears. One morning I had it on Kiis FM in our office. The song was played twice within 45 minutes. Hashtag not exaggerating. I wish u heaven

I can't listen to radio music because they play the same songs so much you end up hating the sound of them. I loved Ed Sheeran's shape of you the first 30 times I heard it but they played that song so much I don't even like a the sound of the intro anymore. It's overkill! Now we listen to spotify at work...so much better!

It’s tacky for him (or any artist) to call out other artists by name because you don’t like their music or their perceived lack of talent. He wasn’t the sole judge of what was good and what wasn’t. Even if both of those were artists are prepackaged creations, their music makes some people feel things that we feel when we listen to P. Art is subjective plain and simple.

Uhmmmm. This has ALWAYS been the case with POP Radio stations. When Doves Cry was played to death in 85. ![]()

Where would today's 'artists' be without autotune? I can't listen to any radio station anymore that plays what music is 'in' because it's all autotuned to the max.

My understanding is that Prince's comment was written on a note. Was this intended for public consumption? I wholeheartedly agree with his sentiments, but it's unusual of Prince to criticise people by name.

could it be that he wasnt neccessarily dumping on perry or sheeran but just the fact that we r being force fed music

I agree with those who are saying this was a slam against the industry, not Katy Perry or Ed Sheeran specifically. Remember, even when specifically asked about Justin Bieber, Prince did mention that Bieber had talent.

Sheeran does have massive talent. Prince started getting better, live not on record, where he sucked. All you others say Hell Yea!! ![]()
- E-mail - orgNote - ![]() |
The problem with this is that we all know Prince was only happy when he was getting his own way.

They both create catchy pop music. So did Prince, MJ, Madonna, The Backstreet Boys, NSync, Boys 2 Men, blah blah blah, etc... If it wasn’t pleasing to the years, it wouldn’t work. Jealousy sucks. (Insert something clever here)
- E-mail - orgNote - ![]() |
Prince's fear and jealousy of other musical arists always made him a bit of jerk but I dont think he meant this to be made public.
I see it more of a critique of the radio industry playlists which become nationalized and genericisd since the 80s with the massive radio industry consolidation than a slam at Perry and Sheeran specifically.

Perry and Sheeran ain't gonna change the world. Their music is ok, nothing special but also nothing awful IMO, some of their tracks I actually quite enjoyed. But that's just how rubbish commerical radio works, has done for decades now, that's no mystery. www.filmsfilmsfilms.co.uk - The internet's best movie site!
