P - STILL causing controversy! accuses music industry of 'trying to ram Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran down our throat

LOVE IT!!

Prince accuses music industry of 'trying to ram Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran down our throats' in secret diary blasting radio play lists.

Hate the fact that I have to quote the daily mail [need to wash afterwards!]

Not that I care for either of the mentioned artists, but I'm sure someone was saying the same about Prince in 1984.

The difference being that the Katy/Ed phenomenon occurs every single album. The same can't be said for Prince.

He was right! Quite why there hasn't been more public outrage over it I don't understand, I simply cannot listen to commercial music radio it's just too damn repetitive and has been for years. If we switch off and stop buying such shit then things will be forced to improve! It must have been especially galling for someone as talented as Prince to see much lesser talented artists succeed so much based solely on promotion and mass commercial airplay. That said he could have helped himself more to show his talented side, his later releases (post Emancipation) left a lot to be desired, as all these 'recent' vault releases proved he was a lot more capable than he often showed us and the general public at large.

Good for him!
Perry is bland. Sheeran looks he hasn't bathed in weeks, does everything he can to be even more unattractive and his music is juvenile.

Welcome to "the org", laytonian… come bathe with me.

He wasn't wrong. Though, to be perfectly honest, until I saw the movie Yesterday, I had never even heard of Ed Sheeran.

There are benefits to being hopelessly "non-current."

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

That’s not controversial unless you’re under 20.

Don't boo me off the stage...I like some of Ed Sheeran's work, particularly the duet "Perfect" with Beyonce...gives me chills.

There is youtube video of both of them performing this song; Beyonce looks enraptured and the audience is as well.

I agree that radio will ram certain songs down our throat whether we like it or not. I used to like “Truth Hurts” by Lizzo the first 100 times I heard it. Now it’s grating on my ears. One morning I had it on Kiis FM in our office. The song was played twice within 45 minutes. Hashtag not exaggerating.

EXACTLY! I can't listen to radio music because they play the same songs so much you end up hating the sound of them. I loved Ed Sheeran's shape of you the first 30 times I heard it but they played that song so much I don't even like a the sound of the intro anymore. It's overkill! Now we listen to spotify at work...so much better!

Yeah, but you've likely heard Sheeran's music. He's been around for at least 4 albums (starting in 2011, but self-releasing music six years before that). I can't imagine you've not heard "The Shape of You" or something in a store or somewhere, and maybe just didn't know who it was. BUT all that said, his music is a little on the tame side for me. PS Yesterday was a fun movie.

To the topic, I wonder if the note about Perry & Sheeran wasn't just two random folks he picked. There are others besides those two that corporate promotes non-stop. Many artists, whether good or bad, are part of the machine. (Frankly, I don't see how Rihanna has been around this long, and it's only because of the corporate structure, as she's horrible.) Maybe Perry & Sheeran were just on his radar at that moment or something.

I wonder if he'd never crossed paths with Beyonce if he'd not dug into her the same way. For a long time, it seemed like she never stopped long enough for people to take a rest from her. It was just constant Beyonce album, tour, videos, album, tour, videos. Or why not make a comment about NKOTB or BSB doing reunion/joint tours, etc?

We'll never know, but I feel like his comments were more at the record companies, with Perry & Sherran being the visual aids, than a slam against them as artists or people.

It’s tacky for him (or any artist) to call out other artists by name because you don’t like their music or their perceived lack of talent. He wasn’t the sole judge of what was good and what wasn’t. Even if both of those were artists are prepackaged creations, their music makes some people feel things that we feel when we listen to P. Art is subjective plain and simple.

Where would today's 'artists' be without autotune? I can't listen to any radio station anymore that plays what music is 'in' because it's all autotuned to the max.

And that's why streaming is so popular now.

My understanding is that Prince's comment was written on a note. Was this intended for public consumption? I wholeheartedly agree with his sentiments, but it's unusual of Prince to criticise people by name.

This is what he was implying, but some just like to twist words and start unnecessary drama.

I agree with those who are saying this was a slam against the industry, not Katy Perry or Ed Sheeran specifically. Remember, even when specifically asked about Justin Bieber, Prince did mention that Bieber had talent.

I'm surprised he would mention Ed Sheeran though, who is a singer/songwriter and does play some instruments. I can totally see the Katy Perry mention though, who's the very definition of "mass-produced" music.

Sheeran does have massive talent. Prince started getting better, live not on record, where he sucked.

The problem with this is that we all know Prince was only happy when he was getting his own way.

If radio continued to play Prince's records then he would think radio was the best invention of all time.

However, the USA audience (in particular) turned it's back on Prince and this was reflected in a decline in radio play and record sales.

So the obvious reaction Prince had was to lash out at whoever was being played on the radio at that time.

I have no interest in Ed yet I have no issue with him doing his own thing. Katy Perry is great and a talented singer and songwriter.

So Prince was just jealous.... as always.

In a modern context how are we force-fed music?

We have numerous digital radio, internet and satellite radio stations.

There are numerous different streaming platforms.

We now have the likes of Amazon, Google and YouTube all streaming content.

We still, just abouts, have physical record shops.

...and every day, I choose what I listen to on my media player.

So I can't see how I don't have the choice in what I choose to listen to.

I can't think of anything which is forced-fed as our media is massively fragmented - so much so, I couldn't even tell you the name of any Ed Sheran songs!

cool

They both create catchy pop music. So did Prince, MJ, Madonna, The Backstreet Boys, NSync, Boys 2 Men, blah blah blah, etc... If it wasn’t pleasing to the years, it wouldn’t work. Jealousy sucks.
(Insert something clever here)

Prince's fear and jealousy of other musical arists always made him a bit of jerk but I dont think he meant this to be made public.

I see it more of a critique of the radio industry playlists which become nationalized and genericisd since the 80s with the massive radio industry consolidation than a slam at Perry and Sheeran specifically.

Perry and Sheeran ain't gonna change the world. Their music is ok, nothing special but also nothing awful IMO, some of their tracks I actually quite enjoyed. But that's just how rubbish commerical radio works, has done for decades now, that's no mystery.

My reply to Prince would be, have you tried like turning it off or listening to something else? Alot more nefarious individuals out there to get worked up about.
