What Prince song had the biggest, most uplifting effect on you? Share your stories!

‘Free Urself’ saved me from suicide. The track came out around the perfect time, like exactly when I needed it. I was on a school trip in my criminal justice class to the state fair. After we were done learning from the police work there, they let us roam around and have fun. Most walked with their friends. I walked alone. I got a headache. Eventually it was about to pour down rain, coincidentally the same time we were leaving. We made it to the bus just in time. On the bus, I flipped out my phone and heard that Prince dropped this new song as his new Purple Pick of The Week on TIDAL. I was feeling so bad and felt hopeless, then I blasted this song in my ear buds on the way back to school. I started crying and the other kid beside me thought it was from pain. Well it kinda was, but the song helped release the pain I was holding inside all day (really for months up until that point). So those tears were actually tears of joy from that song. Thanks Prince for being my friend, being there for me when no one else was and making me believe again.

When I've had a rough day or feel overwhelmed I pop in '1000 hugs & kisses'...it amazes me that a man penned those lyrics... When I need to feel a little badass or I'm nervous for something I go with Baby Im a Star, Cream or Sexy MF. When I feel like singing at the top of my lungs in the car I put on International Lover, Electric Intercourse, Big City (What's Going On? Everything good!) and my two new favorites to sing along to: Baby Your a Trip and Gigolos get Lonely Too. 💜

Simply imagine when life is at it's depths due to the number one killer (in Europe).
Then remember what music is to you.

Play those tracks.

Cry.

Pray.

Grateful to read your story and hear the impact this song had on your life. I always go to this song when I need extra encouragement, I always feel like he's talking directly to me.

Granted, I'm close to being an atheist, but I started listening to this song nonstop during a months-long heartbreak situation, and although not all the lyrics move me as much ("I asked her to marry me..."), it's overall very uplifting to me, to this day.

When you are in a situation as I tried to describe, put on that 1999 live video.

Simply watch the show, see the emotions.

Notice the difference with your own emotions.

Feel the positive influence.

Recently, it's been "Style" from his Emancipation album. In fact, I just opened a thread on the song.

I had suffered with depression, anxiety and derealisation for 6 years now, and almost found no hope in life. Only in recent years (starting from late 2016) did I grow a backbone and learned to love life again. I still have the odd night of feeling of despair and cry myself to sleep, but most days I'm well and always look for the good in life, and look at the past in a rose-tinted way, because that's what you gotta do.

Anyway back to the song "Style" being uplifting to me... Prince's music style of the 1990s was a bit dark here and there, but the lyrics in "Style" had inspired me in recent weeks. If anything, I just listen to Prince's lyrics and think about the meaning.

"Style is the face you make on a Michael Jordon dunk... Style is a non-violent march... Style is buying your mom a house... Style is no fear of death"

He's saying to look at the things that matter the most in life -
they are examples of style, not hair coloring or envying "cool people" or buying expensive possessions when you have bills to pay. This song is relevant these days because everyone seems so obsessed with keeping up appearances - at least where I live, anyway.

I'm happy that you are here still and that you saw another route to take. Even in our darkest moments we all must remember that it will pass and things WILL get better.

Mountains.

(My most uplifting, feel-good Prince tune, ever! Whenever I feel sad, or have no energy, I play this. And of course, the extended version is even more thrilling. I remember listening to this over and over and over when I was in the hospital. Headphones on, not even able to hear or see the nurses coming in and out. Shaking and bumping in my bed with my eyes closed. They found it always very funny to see me like this. wink So through this song I won a couple of extra Prince fans. We're still in touch because of Prince's music. That uplifting friendly tune kept me going through chemo therapy for months. And not to foget; the W&L involvement is what makes this tune so feminin and open. It's just a fantastic dance tune. You can feel that Prince & his band were happy playing it.)

Computer Blue.

(My most satisfying weird and surprisingly strange Prince tune with many turns and hard melodic twists, and just about long enough (the long extended version i mean). You can hear not only his thrilling and voice, but also his soul expressed with the screams coming from the bottom of his lungs and being. I also always keep listening to that beautifully painfull sounding endless whining guitar ending. I never skip it. Same with that crying distorded intro solo. Will never get tired of it, and it will never sound outdated to me. It's my favorite spring-fucked-up-song to play in my car and hit the highway, screaming on the top of my lungs, hitting the pedal.

ANother thing i love is to put the level up in my house at night, with all the lights out (try it!). and lay down on the floor with my big speakers at both sides of my head - no headphones. It's as if Prince is playing it for you in your living room! Freaks the shit out of me everytime, in a most positive way.)

The Ballad Of Dorothy Parker. (wish it was longer)

(My Prince warm/winter song. Especially on headphone while i'm taking my bath. I love to take long baths. Isn't this just the most beautiful song Prince has ever written ?

The sound of it, the warmth, the strange effect it has on many, as if you were standing right in the middle these scenes happening. It's the best bass loop ever invented, dry as fuck, melodic as no other. And that wiggling organ, the perfect funky percussion and drum loop. And ost of all his story telling timbre and close-to-your-ear ernest telling. If you can't get hot, ther's something wrong with you. wink

Also will never ever get tired of this beauty. Like I said, wish it was longer, much much longer.

Would also love to have this as an instrumental track only, just to have sex on. Prince?)

(Same goes as well for the great When 2 R In Love, but in a more personale different way.)

There are actually many many others too all with theyr own personal use.

Like Something In the Water, or Lady Cab Driver, All The Critics Love You In NY, or Automatic, If I Was Ur Girlfriend, I Wish U Heaven (extended), Alphabet St., etc...

The guy basically wrote many soundtracks of my life for many moods.
