good shit. glad to see some people were offended - inoffensive comedy is bad comedy.

A certain kind of mellow.

Dave Chappelle sings "1999" at the begininning of his new standup special on Netflix called "Sticks & Stones". Really hilarious. He's still the best comedian in the world.

I have to say, I'm not sure what the significance of quoting 1999 was ....what was his point?

The important point here is “trying to run from my destruction, you know I didn’t even care!” He’s telling everyone he doesn’t care about their judgement. (Could have sworn it was judgement day). The other point is about death. Oops, outta time.

It was okay. Seems to rely a little too much on being offensive for the sake of being offensive but he makes the point I have been making for years (funny how often that happens) that this time travel. we are going to hold you accountable for anything you've ever done... And if you say something today and in 30 years we decided we are offended then you are done...

I for one, am so sick and tired of all those that get offended about everything these days, and then act like they've been appointed God, to be judge and jury, to condemn you, and tell you whether it's right or wrong! I don't know how it's gotten to that point, and how some people have turned into absolute cowards and wimps, allowing it to happen, and being bullied and harrassed into apologizing for everything! Enough of this BS already! People need to grow a spine and start standing up for themselves, and stop cowering to the social media mob bullies, letting them dictate what they can and can't say or do!

And who are the "you people" that you're speaking of? I take that to mean that you are one of the social media mob bullies, that go around bullying and attacking others who don't agree with what you want them to, and harrassing them until they do so? So NO, I won't call it even and call it a day, I'll express myself whenever I want to, and won't be silenced just because you don't happen to like what I have to say! There's too much of that going on in the world right now as it is, and people need to stand up to it, refusing to take it anymore, and put a stop to it!

9.1 Surround Sound✔

Netflix✔

Sausage & Pepperoni Pizza✔✔✔

Watching now... nothing comoing out the rear channels (thought the laughter would for sure). So more like this special is in 5.1 if you count your left right, and then left & right surround (to the sides)... but no left and right rears.

Social norms change as time goes on, usually for the better. Just because comedians got away with things 10 or 20 years ago doesn't mean it's okay to keep saying the same shit now. Anybody who puts the effort into growing as a person will recognize that they were wrong in the past, and apologize accordingly. If a celebrity gets 'cancelled' now for something they did in the past, it's probably because 1) what they did was fucked up or hurtful, and 2) they're unapologetic and double down on the shit that people are rightfully upset about in the first place.

Also, if a comedian can't make audiences laugh without punching down at marginalized people, they're fucking lazy writers and not as great at comedy as they think. Whoever said that "inoffensive comedy is bad comedy" is laughably wrong. There's no limit to what can be said or explored in comedy, but if you need to offend entire groups of people in order to make people laugh, you're grossly unimaginative. Bill Cosby (albiet a piece of a shit, as we all know now) was pretty damn clean and yet he was an incredibly entertaining standup comedian.

And the problem with the Dave Chappelle situation is the hypocrisy inherent in it.

I hear it's about cancelling Cancel Culture but is it?

If all jokes are off limits then are black jokes told by white comics off limits?

Are immigration jokes off limits?

Here's a test:

What offends you?

Would a joke told that offends you be off limits?

I'm not a cancel culture disciple so I don't care which jokes are told.

But I bet many people praising Chappelle will be the first ones protesting once someone tells a joke that rankles their sensibilities.

Tell all the offensing jokes you like.

I just doubt the populace can handle it.

I like Dave regardless. Whether I thought some of the jokes were tasteless or not. I think it’s being blown out of proportion. I honestly wasn’t expecting the pedophile jokes on the current special, but I’ll check him out again.

what do you mean off limits?

But for the most part if it offends someone, too bad. Really... you can choose to listen or you can choose to leave. Right? But to say they can not say it... well that would be then end of comedy. No one has the right to not be offeneded.

but very little offends me. I do point out when something is said is out of line but that is not to be confused with me being offend. (It is funny how some get that all mixed up).

Yes, I agree, everyone does have an opinion, and they have a right to voice that opinion, without fear of being harrassed, bullied, trashed, targeted and threatened! In today's society, especially the social media mob society, people have lost jobs, been outcasted, bullied, threatened, harmed by violence, etc, all for saying something some others didn't like, and to me, that's just not right! Even if some say something that perhaps they shouldn't, it doesn't matter if they apologize for it, some still act like they're God, judge and jury, as if it's their job to make them pay! People don't forgive anymore, and have no compassion towards one another......that behavior needs to stop, and people need to stand up to it until it does!

Did I use it wrong?

Well defined it means out of bounds so I can see how I jumbled it in the third line.

So all jokes cannot be off limits.

But a white comic using the N-word would be off limits in this climate.

Harvey Weinstien victims would be considered off limits.

And concentration camp jokes would run into problems.

And rape jokes are a definite no no.

I love that though! I love love love the fact that Vice, Rotten Tomatoes and them are clamouring over each other on who could "cancel" him first. They could have used this as an opportunity to critique him, but seeing that construce criticism is mosly abscent, they instead attempted to write him off & censor him, which obviously made the curiosity to watch the show stronger. I read the word "hypocrisy" earlier in this thread, but the way I see it, it was him who exposed the hypocrisy in alot of the people, and the aftermath dialouge in light of the special proved that. I love Dave Chapelle, like him or not, he's a thinker unlike many in his profession, and we need more authentic artists like him who genuinely don't seccumb to confirmity and groupthink.

He is so talented and I was laughing away though most of it but I have to say there was a swirl of conflicted feelings within me. I thought the comments on the "T's" was kinda rough.

He seemed angrier than I remembered him. I will have to digest.

Loved the intro.

Currently, the critics score is 17% and the audience score is 99%.

How is that even possible? Some of the critics say that this show is just not his finest moment but still.....99% like it ?

I haven´t watched it yet but based on the reactions here on the org I´m even more curious to watch it now.

They're out of touch, that's the only explanation. We've seen that same scenario in music as well before, so many times. There's a bigger disconnect between critics and the audience nowadays, thanks to social media (usually twitter in this case) critics and writers no longer have the final say to push a definitive narrative that supposedly speaks for a particular audience anymore, and the ones that do, get directly challenged as well. The irony is "cancel culture" backfired on itself in this case, again thanks to him. Watch the epilogue at the end, it will shed a different perspective in regards to his jokes about trans/homosexual guys that flew over the heads of many of those critics.

The thing is, there was nothing hateful about any of the jokes. It's just observational humor from Dave's perspective, not a manifesto against any demographic... except "cancel culture".

I think the people that are angry didn't pay attention to what was actually said. I think they're just reacting to buzz-words.

There are no protected groups that can't be joked about, nor should there be.

I would say he should not have told many of those jokes. Not that they made me feel sad or offended... I do not care and yes some of them hit home for me... But his point was to go to far... and to hit back at the foolish 'take back' (or whatever it is) cult... I guess he figured if he said it 10 or 20 years ago he might as well say it again.

Spoiler warning for anyone who hasn't seen the film Se7en!

Remember that scene at the end of the film where Morgan Freeman says "If you kill him, he wins!"

That was the dilemma that Chappelle laid out for comedy critics. From that stand point, this show was a work of genius.
