Good! There's nothing less funny than "safe" comedy that strives to be unoffensive and that conforms to social norms?

[Edited 8/28/19 19:27pm]

.

Like someone pointed out on Twitter: 15 years ago Dave walked away from a multi-million dollar paycheck because he realized the jokes in his show were used to insult his own people. Now he happily accepts a multi-million dollar paycheck to insult other people.

.

I've watched this special. It's mostly a long whine about how comedians nowadays aren't allowed to punch down anymore, as if sexism, homophobia and transphobia were ever legit subjects.

.

In many ways this special is barely different from the unfunny garbage masquerading as rightwing comedy.

I am a liberal and I laughed my azz off the whole time. I did note that I was surprised he could get away with some of the jokes in these days of outrage. However, I get his point...no one can joke about anything these days.

Dave Chappelle sings "1999" at the begininning of his new standup special on Netflix called "Sticks & Stones". Really hilarious. He's still the best comedian in the world.

I have to say, I'm not sure what the significance of quoting 1999 was ....what was his point?

He was talking about suicide (forgot the name). How things might appear ok on the outside but inside they could have serious shit going on. Suicide is the end of someone’s world. 1999 is about the end of the world. I think that’s the point

I’m thankful Dave also had the guts to defend Michael Jackson He has huge giant ass balls.

Michael's balls did look huge resting on that young boy's chin

The comments made on this therad by many of the orgs long time whiners and bigots along with all the "offended" media out there is exactly the reason to see this show.

Its hilarious and on point! Chappell is at the top of his game and spares no one. Exactly what comedy is supposed to be all about long before the PC culture started trying to ruin everything.

Oh and the included Prince music is a huge bonus!

10/10

I thought it was telling how he changed the lyrics "try to run from my destruction, ya know I didnt even care" as in he is going to go all out in his subject matter that would possibly end a career in these times but he doesn't care...he's going to say what he wants.

Dave pissed a lot of people off with this one from what I heard. The media (and the sheep they've indoctrinated) is starting to rally against him for not cosigning their narratives.

When aren't people pissed off these day about something? rolleyes...It's getting tired and old! So sick of the social media, mob mentallity bullies, that having nothing better to do with themselves, except harrass and bully those that don't agree with them or go along with what they want them to say or believe.......ENOUGH! The world is getting sick of it and them, and I for one, can't blame them!

I'm a gay man, and I use the terms "Fag", "Queer", or whatever...I wasn't offended at all by Dave's set. It was funny. But there is a very thin line when it comes to the two words "Fag" and "Nigger". Many moons ago, at a bus station a black woman says to me "What are you looking at faggot?" and I replied "How about you don't refer to me as a faggot, and I won't call you a nigger?" As soon as I said that, I thought to myself, "she's gonna beat my faggot ass!" Alas, she just said, "Girl, please". I must say, my balls haven't been that big since then.

If it breaks when it bends, U better not put it in!

Dave Chappelle reminded us that there are still SANE liberals alive today! I can’t thank him enough. Also, I loved that story Dave told with Obama at the end of the Epilogue. That was sweet and wholesome

Er, liberals are sane. It's the right wing dickheads who are insane.

No sense in choosing one over the other, the radicals of both parties are insane and they speak so loudly they taint the reputations of their alignments which do a decent enough job of that themselves, tbh.

The 'F' word and the 'N' word are both words that diminish, demean and marginalize whomever you're directing them towards and they have no place in anyone's vocabulary. Period. I grew up in rural Pennsylvania in the 70's, heard both alot from adults and kids, and even as a child I knew that they were wrong and hurtful. Yes, I'm a 'bleeding heart liberal' who believes that it is better to treat people with dignity and respect. Sorry for that. I'm also a gay man. If someone calls me the 'F' word they will have to deal with my wrath. I'm sure there are some on here that are screaming 'Grow up!' but I'm not the immature one. Sorry for that.

So true, both parties left and right, have dickheads who are insane, and they prove that more and more each day!

He was screaming the word ‘faggot’ because he knows how much power people ignorantly give the word.

It was a bit much, I had to shut it off. I'm not easily offended, and I know it was probably meant to offend people, and it did just that.

Nobody is more whiney or bigoted than the folks who treat any attempts at being culturally respectful as personal attacks on their 'freedom'. The world isn't going to fucking end if you can't casually throw around racist or homophobic slurs, and if you need to rely on them to make your point or make people laugh, you aren't nearly as clever as you think you are.

Dave might make a good point once in a while, and I do enjoy his work when he isn't punching down at people he doesn't understand, but he has a long way to go in catching up with the world around him. There is so much shit that is wrong in this world, and any worthy comedian would hit the right notes instead of complaining about how "sensitive" people are because they *gasp* have empathy for victims of bigotry, hate, and sexual violence.

it seems he is getting what he wanted. The show seemed to have quite a few parts where he was just making a joke saying "what shouldn't be said". To me, it wasn't as witty as he has been. It wasn't smart, it was kinda lazy, relying on shock effect (what little of it that there was).

.

Still, it was entertaining, for the most part, but only mildly so. Not offensive (to me), not thoughtful... kinda like standard US fare.

.

Good for him he made his money.

Well, how about you go to Times Square and just start shouting them as loud as you can at people and see what happens? After all- they're just words, right? I stand by my statement- these are offensive words at any time an/or place.

I just want to know why any major network would put this on, seeing as everyone on the internet has been inundated with this "offensive" comedy out of the clear blue sky without any active volition or direct physical choosing on them, the viewers, part.

I mean it's one thing if, say, you put this special behind a paywall, require people to go out of their way to download an app, take out their credit card, enter said credit card, type in "D-A-V-E-C-H-A-P-P-E-L-L-E" one letter at a 30 second time on this little scrolly remotes, locate his picture, click on said picture, then buffer said special....

But that's clearly a different hypothetical scenario entirely.

You have to subscribe to Netflix though.

That there is enough of a paywall.
