Not a brokeass or cheapskate, just not willing to pay a price that I think is ridiculous for a book......my perogative. |

Unless the book is fire starter I won't argue with that. What? |

I mean, how much did we pay for 20-30 page tour books at Prince shows over the years? I’m guessing the Amazon pre-order price will be significantly lower, but I believe in paying good money for good art. Support good artists or prepare to live in a world of mediocre art ... see today’s popular music. |

It's not that I can't afford it. I can easily afford it. It's whether I can justify spending that kind of money on a book. And if it's anything like 21 Nights, then I wouldn't spend a penny on it.
I'm not into these photo-books (what's the point, you'd flick through it a couple of times and that's it) but I bought 21 Nights for the CD. I know it could have been better but that's a different thread..
.
I'd happily pay $75 if this new book came with music, but of course it won't

Ordered it on AMazon for $67 and that includes shipping to Netherlands. As with all my pre-orders on Amazon I expect the price to drop before they ship it out. |

It doesn't matter what it is. 75 dollars for a book is insane. Even if it came with 100 unreleased songs I'd still have to think twice about it. That would work out to 75¢ per song so without question I would buy it just for the music. But that ain't happening. |

I still haven´t bought Indigo Nights to this day and I don´t think I ever will because neither the book nor the CD are interesting to me but I am very happy with the Before the Rain book and the Afshin Shahidi book because to me they are a bit like documents that give you some kind of insight into the artist´s mind and his era and colleagues. I also bought the Steve Parke book and I like it but for some reason it is not as interesting as Beaulieu´s book. I don´t blame Steve though because the era in which Alan Beaulieu worked with Prince was a time when Prince was probably still a bit more down to earth and more open, as you can tell by the pictures from that era. The photos from later eras are simply too staged for my taste. Too vain, and not as spontaneous as Beaulieus´s pictures.
But I understand your point. You basically look at the pics a couple of times and probably don´t go back as often as you´d go back to , say , a biography. I really appreciate your sentiment here. IMO, the world undervalues art and writing relative to a lot of other lines of work.
The discussion here is partly about the price of this photobook relative to others, so there's that. Who knows, maybe the "most appropriate" price for other books would be higher than it is. That is, in the way of reflecting how important art and writing might be to people in relation to what they spend on other things.
Also realize that many people are just squeaking by paying for food and shelter...in no way mean to suggest otherwise.
Then, too, there's the question of how much the art/music makers and writers get paid (proportionally) out of the profits, relative to others in the industry. That's a big purple world topic, of course, and it's another thread.

"Randee recalled being nervous to meet Prince for the first time all those years ago, despite having already photographed several major celebrities, and she obsessed over creating just the right playlist to set the mood. As soon as he arrived at her studio Prince put her at ease, and by the end of the shoot Randee was enjoying her time with him so much that she reached out and held his hands in her own, begging him not to leave. 'Don’t worry, I’ll be back,' Prince promised, and before he walked out the door he turned and paid her the ultimate compliment: 'Great music.' "

Id have paid up to 500 for that Al B Beofre The Rain book. Those pics etc are testiment to the perfect storm of Prince and dealwiththedevil-like ascension. And his prime /best era imo. "Climb in my fur." |

What's the point in looking at pictures of him? And if you want to look at pictures of Prince, there's thousands of them on Google images and they're all free. You can print them out and everything. 21 Nights was OK. But I wouldn't spend 75 quid for it. |

Nothng really. But folks complained about the bindign taking part of some pics layouts, the live cd being uninspiring etc etc etc. And that it only captured one specific tour era. In retrospect, its a fine piece of work that got the shaft mostly due to us being spoiled with projects and not appreciating what was given. Nobody (but me) will ever admit to it though.
