ISLIJAG mentioned a podcast a couple of times, and given some directions the discussion here has taken, I'm moved to link to podcasts.

I'm listing the discussion from the guys first, as maybe folks like Pete would prefer to hear from guys. This first link is the guys from the Prince Podcast mostly discussing the COMPLETELY DIFFERENT situation with R. Kelly, but there's also brief, and I think worthwhile, mention of Prince. I'll leave the description at that. Anyone interested can listen and give their own opinions, if they wish.

Here's a discussion among women. This particular episode of their podcast was spurred by the Blackgirlnerds article.

I remember when i worked at a store, there was a beautiful prostitute or someone who carried herself that way, one day she said to me "aren't you cold" I said "yea" she said "i'll keep you warm" I said "ok" right behind this gorgeous woman of the night was an old bat looking at me like i was satan incarnate, she called the store later to complain. Old hags like that just don't want to see no one have any fun.

You're not making the conversation better.

I was wondering if that article was ever going to come up here. In all honesty... I think the writer made some decent points, even if she went overboard by comparing Prince to someone as heinous as R Kelly. People can throw around arguments about age of consent laws all they want, but there's something worrying about a man in his early/mid 30's going after teenage girls as soon as they hit 18. Especially when he had been planning his moves while they were still minors. Why couldn't he hook up with women his own age or older? You can't tell me there weren't plenty of grown women throwing themselves at Prince, who were all willing to let him take charge (we all know he was a control freak). And I'm sure they were gorgeous and fit Prince's type perfectly... so why was he lusting after teen girls? It's really weird and I'm glad there are fans willing to question it instead of sweeping it under the rug.

i'd suppose you're a woman. women seem to be the first to say things like that, older women, women past their own primes who aren't much fun to be around in the first place. I read the article but saw her agenda when she used words like "grooming" in it, i doubt she was any kind of fan to begin with and just an oppurtunistic journalist. I won't get into the rights or wrongs from a moral perspective but young women of the age that Prince was meeting these girls have always been the age that men preferred to seek in women, even when they got older. Ever wonder why? Ever think maybe nature has something to do with it? No one wants to hurt their social standing but in most cases, whenever a man can do it, he gets jailbait or not far from it, the examples are endless. And in different times and even now in different parts of the world people wouldn't be using those phoney ass phrases like 'grooming". Women in this country are molly coddled, overprotected and have a million terms to play victim. It's why some of us men really don't want to deal with any of you any more. "me too" "harassment", "grooming" "victim/slut shaming" just shuttup already and go home to that pussywhipped man you beat into submission and leave the rest of us alone.

I'm very sure that you're the type of guy that women have absolutely no desire to "deal with" either, and are thrilled to leave alone, as I'm sure you probably are.

As an aside, when I first saw the article, I posted elsewhere about things that troubled me a lot about it. I said that while I've always found P to be plenty imperfect (like me and the rest of us humans), the writer (who noted being a huge fan of some of P's music) described a sudden, strong, and binary shift in her reaction to P. It's hard for me to understand being such a huge fan for so long, yet not being aware of some of the relationships she was discussing. Not saying it's impossible. Have to admit that I don't know much about the bios of some musicians/composers/artists/writers that I really enjoy. Some of these people lived generations before our time. Anyway, in this particular case, the way the author described her changed reaction was just foreign to me. The overall point I'm trying to make is I'm NO fan of that article.

A couple other things. First, undue whining, about all sorts of things, exists in this world, but that doesn't mean bullying isn't a huge concern that harms people and makes a huge mess of relationships and institutions.

Second, I think "nature" as a big driving force behind some of what people do is a good point. But the fact that nature may be a big driver of many things people do doesn't mean that some of these things aren't negative, even vile, and best dealt with accordingly.

I live in the U.S., and I'd say base, "way of nature" instincts drove the way the Europeans acted on the people here before them, and also drove slavery, and continues to drive vile things going on today.

Can't speak for anyone else, but I have no problem with someone acknowledging that here. I would think plenty of others could say the same re: attractiveness of some 19-year-olds

May I ask if your age is close to 19? If not, may I ask if you sometimes find people closer to your age to be attractive? Just ignore if too personal.

nope, single by choice, i learned from the mistakes of others, i don't see too many happy men in long time relationships, they're stuck though and they are weak willed from what i garner. Don't want or need that kind of "love". I'm a musician anyways, and no one comes between me and that, just like Prince actually was, the women were never his real central loves.

personal opinion about bullying is that the recent push is a joke. Of course we have bullies and I don't like bullies. With that out of the way I believe we are being socially conditioned to be more and more passive and inable to handle things ourselves. by snitching on a bully the young are socially conditioned to rely more and more on the authoritarian powers whatever they are. So, should bullies be handled that way? I like the old way better, you sock that bully as hard as you can so you learn to protect yourself and most bullies learn that they aren't that tough.

Moreover, "bullying" itself is a joke, anytime you let a boss manipulate you into getting up early, threatening to fire you, or a teacher puts pressure on you to get your work done it could be called "bullying" but it's more socially constructive so no one thinks of it that way. Personally, i've never taken bullying from anyone, I hate being in positions where i have to be passive and while it's made my life harder, I can't really see any other way for me. Every job i've ever had has involved even the threat of some kind of physical intimidation, i know that's not a norm, in the white collar world that it frowned upon but even there, the intimation is the same "if you don't do what i want, I will hurt you", same difference.

It's amazing how people don't see or think about the things right under their noses and just repeat like sheep "ya, bullying, yup, yup" "ya, harassment, me too, ya ya". They deserve what they get because they don't think.

that's right, charlie chaplin married a teen when he was 54, crazy but I actually think she might have been the love of his life. Personally, i don't see the attraction beyond just the aesthetic, I've never talked to that young of a woman and not seen that she was nothing more than a 12 year old with boobs, a major turnoff. but if that's what they like, let em have it. times may have changed too, kids today are totally different than they were, i watch ww2 vids and i couldn't imagine too many of the young people being capable of enduring hardships like our boys did then, they'd lay down in the mud with their green hair and cry for their mommies.

that's exactly what it is, delusion and ego. Men like the celebrities we see who do that are doing it because they can and it's available. Celebrity and/or power bring out the worst in man. I've seen many much more limited in their 'power" actually think people were doing their bidding because of "them" not it's because they can use you you idiot.

like i said, the examples are endless, as the article mentioned, Marvin and Janis, and we could go to Elvis and priscilla, Jerry lee and Myrna, on and on and on until the break of dawn. It's become less acceptable with time, I remember being mildly shocked when my ma told me she was only 17 when she met my 37 year old dad, and she said this after I saw something on tv that made me say "hey, he's too old for her". different generations think different, different geographies do too.

like i said, the examples are endless, as the article mentioned, Marvin and Janis, and we could go to Elvis and priscilla, Jerry lee and Myrna, on and on and on until the break of dawn. It's become less acceptable with time, I remember being mildly shocked when my ma told me she was only 17 when she met my 37 year old dad, and she said this after I saw something on tv that made me say "hey, he's too old for her". different generations think different, different geographies do too.

There wouldn't have been a you.

now that you went and said it, these other folks are thinking 'that wouldn't be a bad thing". i was't born until my mom was 22 though and i don't know how long it really took my parents to really decide on marriage, i never asked them and they are both gone, neither was happy with the other though or with life. I learned a lot just watching everyone in my life.

The BGN article should of never been given the green light.
The author couldn't even get basic facts right.
In '16 she called P a "rock n roll feminist".
I must say the hypocrisy & cognitive dissonance of "fans" clutching their pearls now is hysterical, seeing since y'all's been dragging him since mayte released her book/worldwide promo tour near the first anniversary of his death.
Did y'all think it stayed in purple web spots?
Congratulations.

The fact Anna responded whilst mayte remained silent has not gone unnoticed btw.

Age of consent in Minnesota is 16.
Age of consent in the UK is 16.
Not one single woman has said he touched them below 18, let alone below 16.
This was an obvious attempt to encourage the adding of P to the list of Actual predators in showbiz.
Nice try.

I listened to the podcast....I've never heard such trash in my life & will not be returning to their show. Pitiful.

If my child admires a gifted artist or athlete, and asks me about things in that person's biography, should I tell him there is nothing to be inspired by or admire? Or, on the other hand, should I hope that my child follows the lead of everything that person does?

It's not cognitive dissonance to reject both of those paths.

I go to the library and find many biographies of esteemed people. Should we dispense with all biographies that go beyond a simple vision of perfection or evil?

*

I noted above that I had huge problems with the Blackgirlnerds article. I don't need to pronounce that everything I read has zero merit in order to avoid cognitive dissonance.

Unlike the author that is the subject of this thread, you know Prince's life and music. You've lauded some articles written about Prince. Have you written about Prince and his music? If not, would you consider doing so?

Lauded some articles? It is my understanding this thread concerns one article, which like the other posters on here, I have commented on.
I am not a writer, nor do I claim to be.
I have contributed to the "community" since the mid 80s in various ways, not that it's any of your business, or that I owe you or anyone any explanations.

As for the rest of your post ~ Blah.

You brought Mayte's book into the discussion of this article, so there's nothing unreasonable in me responding to you with a reference to other written material. You lauded "Reclaiming the Black Prince." It also seems we both enjoy a book by the author of that article. Not trying to invade your privacy with this. You expressed it here on the Org.

Asked because I'm interested to read articles, books, etc. in the case that you have written about Prince. I didn't know if you were an author or not. You've expressed concerns about the state of the purple lore world. You know a lot about Prince and his music. But perhaps you feel that presenting that subject as you think it should be presented would fall on deaf ears, given your concerns about that purple lore world. Anyway, your reasons for writing or not are (as you point out) your business and not mine.

"As for the rest of your post ~ Blah." I've bolded that part of my post, so now we've got bolded blah.

First thing that comes up with blah Google search:

"blah
/blä/
INFORMAL
noun
  1. 1.
used to refer to something which is boring or without meaningful content.
'the first 20 pages are a lot of blah about budgets and stuff like that' "

Guess folks are glad I didn't go on for 20 pages. lol
