Was it a boy when you wanted a girl?

Is Prince calling someone gay or is he talking about drugs? And who is the someone he's talking about? Rick James?, Andre Cymone?, A Time member?

I think he's just talking about general things in life that you could be upset about, like: Is the poverty bringin' you down? or Was it a boy when you wanted a girl? I always thought it was about, like, did you give birth to a boy when you actually wanted a girl, because some women do want a certain sex. I don't know where you got that it might be about being gay or something, I don't think it has anything whatsoever to do with that. I also don't think he's talking about any one specific person. To me this song is a very general song. Some lines could be specific, like: You need another lover, but I'm not even sure about that. Try to read songs like poetry, it's possible to read way too much into it and then miss the point entirely.

He’s being sarcastic. As in what’s so bad about your life that you’re so miserable? lol

Means are you disappointed with what you got in life instead of getting what you wanted? Prince can be quite cryptic but not with every single sentence that came out of his mouth.

Take it in context of the surrounding lyrics.

I always thought Prince was being ironic/ sarcastic:

In some countries (talking babies) people prefer to have a newborn boy over a girl.

This is def nothing sexual or to do with being gay,

= is yo mamma? wink

Yes the straight hair part really fed into this craziness of mine & I really thought it was towards Rick James, I was only 12 yrs old @ the time the song came out. I've talked about it quite a few times with other ppl & no one has ever suggested anything other than what I thought. To be perfectly honest I'm a little down here. I paid so much attention to the Rick James & Morris Day & The Time On The Tour Bus specials thinking I was gonna get something from this

He was talking to the listener, not referencing himself taking either choice.

Yes the Pop Life and Anna Stesia comments are meant to refer to sexual identity/orientation....and if not who cares...thats what it meant to me and my friends at the young age of 15 and 19.

Prince was looking at things that people often complain about, sometimes mundane like "I wish my hair were curly" or "I wish my hair were straight" to more complicated issues like "I wish I had a son, but I got a daughter" (usually a male perspective in some instances) to "I wish I'd had a daughter, but I had a son" (usually female perspective in some instances).

People find all kinds of reasons to not be satisified with their life, to not be happy with their lot in life. "If I had a million dollars, that would solve everything!" Instead of taking a look at what they do have and thinking, "Man, I have everything I ever needed or wanted. I'm so blessed in my life."

And he was saying in the song, that it's these "challenges" no matter how mundane, how complicated, that gives life its flavor. Without these things, these challenges, we'd become pretty bored with our life if everything was "perfect" (however, we might define perfect). So, life has that "pop", that little bit of oomph that keeps us on our toes. We can't all have everything that the rich and famous have, but in many instances, they can't have what we (the poor or middle class) have. So we have to find our niche in life, where we fit, and accept that life has these little bits of pop, and just dig it, dig life, groove with it. Once we do that, we'll be more satisified with life in general and we begin to see the perfection of our life, in its imperfections.

I always saw this as a reference to just companionship, friendship, and not anything sexual or relationship related, especially when you take the lyrics in context (sometimes they mean just what they say):

Have U ever been so lonely
That U felt like U were the
Only one in this world?

Have U ever wanted 2 play
With someone so much U'd take
Any one boy or girl?

He's saying have you ever been so lonely that you wanted to be around someone, anyone, male, female, it didn't matter, just to have someone around, just to have a friend.
