Probably not in the sense the OP is referring to. One of us would might be getting down on the dancefloor all night, drinking too much, throwing up, then having to be sent home in a cab. Prince would have been the playing the music he wrote for us to all party with, observing us crazies, then going to an afterparty until 3 AM, then coming home and starting to write the beginnings of another great song like "Shhhhhhh" or something, then sleeping until 1PM. His idea of a great time and most other mortals was not, I think very similar. Good morning children...take a look out your window, the world is falling... |

Let’s be honest. Prince was a bit of an aspy loner workaholic type who lived in the studio. He was hardly a “party animal”. |

Pretty sure he was talking about his younger days... up to around the mid 80s.
.
He was obvioulsy at some wild parties. Rick James, Eddie Murphy, etc... you get the idea.
.
If the story about Ingrid Chevez and creating Lovesexy is true, then that partying was even up to '88, when he had his epiphany.

Fill us with the dope track, lick us, twist us, roll us in your mouth. Light us up and take a hit. Suck us til we're dry, and when we're lookin' like a roach, hit the lights.
Party poetry right there. |

Yep - especially in the 80's. It seems he slowed down a bit on the libations in later years, but no doubt he got his "drink on" in the 80's. As the OP quoted, he explains it in The Breakdown. |

Prince stayed up late jamming to music with his band(s), other musicians, etc. |

Right. I think he tried the X that night, because Cat had described the type of high it gives, and he wanted to "escape" whatever dark/negative place he was in at that time.
*
During his last interview with Arsenio Hall - 2014 or 15 I think - Arsenio started to talk about those "crazy and wild parties" in the mid 80's - and a memory of this crazy and bizarre house where they ended up where Prince didn't want to touch anything....it seemed like he was desribing some kinky sex/drug party. Prince jokingly got up from his seat and started to walk out, which was Arsenio's "cue" to change the subject - which he did. So, no doubt there were very wild parties with women, drugs, etc in the 80's, especially '84-'87, when Prince was "the shit", as Charlie Murphy stated |

Bonotoc's statement about red eyes was meaning that unreleased Second Coming mini movie he made back in 81-82ish era where it shows his eyes were blodshot as hell as if he was high on cannibus. Way before ecstasy was in vogue. But either way, Im not saying Prince never partied. I'm saying he wasnt the definition of a 'party animal."
As an aside, do yall know where the term Party Animal comes from? A southern California dj, Frazier Smith, of seminal deceased rock station, KMET, coined it. It was a regional thing that exploded into the worldwide venacular. He was fired or quit the staion in the 80's and went to other ventures and could not use that term Party Animal because it was now deemed the 'intellctual property' of KMET. He had to start using the term, Party Vikings. Aint that some shit?
And that term "excuse me" used in the venacular as "Well excuse me for livin " etc etc..that was coined by Steve Martin in bits he would use on Saturday Night Live back in the 70s that became his catch prase and went worldwide into the culture. Sorry for the added info lol "Climb in my fur." |

Yes, sadly I am old enough to remember watching Steve Martin guesting on SNL in the 70's and very much remember his famous "well, excuuuuuuuse me" bit, along with "Two wild and crazy guys", King Tut, and many others. He was hilarious.

Bummer for that DJ If only he'd known to copyright that slogan.... |

^^^ I'm going to go with sarcasm instead of sincerity on this response...I would imagine it was tough to make out Prince's state of inebriation at any given time at the clubs seeing as he was usually surrounded by really big dudes and roped off in his own little VIP corner of the club

I honestly think his main incentive/interest in going to the clubs was tied more to music - listening to the current trends or trying out his own new recordings, checking out the fashion trends, people watching, keeping up his rock star status by being seen at the clubs, and of course, looking for/picking up women. I think the drinking/drugs were the least interesting aspect to him.
*
Oh....and he was nocturnal, so some of it was just boredom. One of his old managers stated in Matt Thorne's Biography that when they were touring in Europe Prince would call him after midnight to go with him to the clubs. He said it was just the worst, because Prince would just sit there at his VIP table and watch people. He said on one occasion their waitress was annoyed - I guess because they were not ordering drinks - and she asked why he bothered to come to the club if he was just going to sit there and not drink or mingle. The manager told her he likes to "people watch". She replied, "well why doesn't he just go to the park then?" |
