Yes, it was about him. Come on....you should know by now that Prince usually wrote about himself, his own life experiences with people, places, etc. He was too self-involved to write about someone elses life

I think that song was very personal and important to him. When he performed it at the 2013 Montreux show he appeared to be wiping tears at the end of the song.
it was, however, i'm willing to think he used creative license like us songwriters do all the time, not everything is literal. it's such a sincere song though, it's a strange candidate for that but who here can picture prince showing up early for a party and staying late, sleeping over at strange places.
Andy Allo recently posted that she recently ran into a rough cut of The Breakdown that she and Prince were trying to work out. She says she will share it "one of these days"

That actually wasn't the first time I attended Arsenio's show. I was present at the new & old shows when Prince performed there in the 90's & COUNTLESS others. Arsenio was a GROUNDBREAKER & I supported him ALL along the way & will continue to support him.
Prince obviously loved him also or he wouldn't have granted him his last TV interview.
BTW The questions were pre-planned by the audience also. So Prince was aware of what was going to be asked.
I can't watch the interview it's too painful for me. But I'm glad I was in attendance which I will treasure for the rest of my life.
Oh please.....Arsenio had a "moment" in the late 80's/early 90's as a talk show host, and then lost it, because he was not a good talk show host. Again, not much of a "bragging right". I attended one of Conan O'Brien's shows in NYC back in 2000 with Harrison Ford as the guest - Conan's still going, so there you go...
*
No kidding that the questions were pre-planned. That whole Q&A segment was ridiculous, and I felt badly for Prince that he had to go through it. Again, no wonder Arsenio's 2nd attempt failed.
*
Prince loved Arsenio??? Okay, sure. More like, either Prince owed him a favor (probably for the extended guest spots in the early 90's), or Prince wanted the media exposure at that particular time.

It's NO SURPRISE to me that U would support Conan O'Brien whether he was still on the air or not. Instead of Arsenio. Yeah for someone who supposedly got around so much, supposedly knows the Who is Who of the biz and supposedly knew Prince she's pretty naive and clueless and quite obviously doesn't know a thing.

Oh, for God's sake - get off your "race" soapbox. I mean really! Conan was a head writer for SNL for years, and a stand up comedian before he landed his talk show. He also had to jump through major hoops to get his show, as he thought he was going to get the Tonight Show. He has proven his longevity there. Arsenio picked up on a trend/fad in the late 80's and it didn't work. He then recently tried again, and it STILL didn't work.

Most likely true there CatB. During that Summer of '86 I went to a party thrown by a regular at the club where I worked, and they brought out the Coke there. Most were doing lines, but I was not interested - never wanted to try it. The girl having the party pulled me into another room to ask me why I wasn't partaking. She was paranoid that I was a "narc" undercover. Pretty funny, but understandable as nobody wants to get busted.
*
I would imagine that even prestigious clubs would not want people, no matter how famous, coming in and not partaking. The stakes were much higher for them than your average person. |

Of course I'm right. I mean I was there. I was there as a super extra special guest and then Prince and Jack Nicholson and Lenny Kravitz and I had a discussion about how much we hate name-dropping. And then Arsenio came in and invited us to a super secret and exclusive movie premiere and --- damn! That bragging disorder is catching!

I thought arsenio was great for awhile, he seemed to get lazy and lost interest and he got bigheaded and lost the charm he had at first. People got tired of him after awhile, i know I did and he seemed to tire of the grind of a daily show and didn't have the discipline of leno or carson, i still remember the battle with leno, leno would take shots at arsenio for showing up at ball games "it's a schoolnight" and of course he was right about that. So, arsenio lost. I always liked him and hoped he could pull off the new show, it was renewed and then suddenly cancelled. Also, John Landau said he liked Arsenio's work on the landau directed coming ot america and didn't understand why he didn't follow up with more film work. He was huge for a brief moment, just huge, then, as often happens in that business, it was over. some blamed the farrakhan thing but he later admitted himself he wasn't crazy about doing it anymore and I think it was already cancelled before the farrakhan show. |

Yes, I had mentioned above that Arsenio's best moment was in Coming To America. He was good, but some of that had to do with him playing off of Eddy's character. He was funny though. I agree, he may have had better success staying with comedy films, but who knows. I had tired of his talk show long before it was cancelled in the early 90's. The whole "fist pump" chant got old very quick, and there was not much else interesting to the show. Johnny, Dave, Jay, Conan and Jimmy knew/know how to keep the viewers interested and laughing. They all had/have great side segments that last, and were/are great with interviews.

But it's true, not many who try the talk show gig make it very long. Only a handful... |

he was good for awhile, comedians can be "on" or "off" most comedians aren't that funny in real life, many of them are quite morose. Arsenio just stopped being funny for me. He was hot as shit for a minute though, everyone talked about him, maybe he could have done better, probably missed those days after they were over. He definitely changed, started with the fist pumps, the finger touching, the dog pound etc.., but when he started wearing the extra colorful suits and the glasses, he really lost touch with what made him charming.

Welll.... I didn't want to reveal this, BUT since we're all telling our stories.....I had been vacationing in England during Prince's Nude tour shows, and was able to attend front row at Wembley. During his performance of Question Of U we locked eyes and I knew there was a connection. Then, one of his bodyguards approached me and gave me a back stage pass. After the show I met Prince and we had an instant connection. He looked adorable in that loose wihte shirt tied at the waist, and his tight black pants. We spent a hot and wild night back at his hotel, and I saw him a few more times before he left England for Ireland. I met Michael B, Sonny T and Rosie G too!! They were fantastic. What a special time with amazing memories. Then, a few months later, I received a card from Prince and a tape of his song "I Wonder", which he said he had written for me. Wow!!!! I am soooo lucky

I agree, but it also depends on one's definition of the term "party animal" and what that term entails. Can you be a "party animal" without doing drugs or drinking to excess?

Based on the Urban Dictionary of "party animal" Prince would not fall under that category

lol I think of a party animal as someone that is wild for parties and cutting loose - spilling over, not technically druggin or getting drunk
.
I think Prince the stage was a party for Prince, the 1979-1988 period felt like Prince & the band were having a private party on stage and we were voyeurs.
.
I think he lived Uptown throught his whole life. And that is one reason I gravitated to Prince so early on. Those utopian ideals he taught me to make your own. And wrap yourself up with it along with people whose hair on one side is swept back. |
