sure but we know he had anxiety issues, why put yourself in a place like that? he did it, so there's no arguement, just don't quite understand it. Maybe the shy guy thing was just an act, which is what I'm getting at. At least in part. Also, i have to repeat, most rockstars are schizoid, elvis was, Bruce is etc..., so to some degree, they are all split personalities, they have to be, to be able to seperate yourself and to bring something out of the void that is pertinent to an audience requires that persoanlity. Alot of the stories are nutty though, the ones that have him running through offices avoiding people that he thought might be there (they weren't) or running past a lowly employee he thought would talk to him, those stories are out there.
I was remembering a story Patti LaBelle told about Prince. She came to visit and she said he never stopped talking and he took her to several of the local clubs where they danced and danced till they got sweaty doing the Funky Chicken etc. I think he was a good dancer and enjoyed it. Perhaps he
needed to feel comfortable with his companions. Look at him in UTCM, pretty outgoing. Yeah, he seemed to be real quiet at times, too. I think his more extreme polarities make him fascinating to me.
Most people present a more uniform character but he was more extreme, ie., shy, awkward v super flamboyant entertainer, sometimes macho, other times femme, uber spirtual, kinda nasty; sweet and kind, sometimes a real douche/prick, really generous with money, super tight-wad. Huh?
You realize that was a movie...right? A work of fiction? That Prince was playing a part? That it had nothing to do with what he was really like?

Not in his later years, but did you watch his last interview with Arsenio? He started bringing up the 80's - trying to reminisce with a Prince - and mentioned some "house of ill repute" where they ended up, and Prince wouldn't touch anything.
I was actually in attendance & surprised Arsenio brought that up to Prince(WHOM was dressed MAGNIFICENTLY!). I was there and gave Prince a sand dollar - right after he, Michael Jackson and James Brown were onstage together.

i thought it was an odd line too but the song was about him, someone here who claimed to be close to him said it was written during the time of an od in 2011 and his surgery. the song along with way back home were him at his most honest so i don't quite know what to make of it either. Prince was never sloppy in anything like we think of most addicts. that was one of the hardest things for me to reconcile with the death, he died like a common street junkie (just read about some fentanyl deaths in my town and thought of Prince and how different I would think he was) it's a contradiction. |

that confused me too, he told arsenio that he was working on it during the time of that interview, but maybe that just meant the band was working on the cd version. "The Breakdown" itself, some people have speculated was cancer breaking his body down, the "you" in the song was the illness, but it's pretty cryptic as Prince usually was. But the most important thing was he was expressing regret over the hurt he caused, the cruel things he did and that they really weren't where his heart was, that spoke volumes to me about the man. The poster here who said the song was written after the first major od in 2011 when "we almost lost him then" which seems to have been corraborated by several sources so maybe the od affected him to the point where he realized he was vulnerable. I don't really know. There were a couple posters, mulefunk was one, and I forget the name of the other, both claimed that he had another serious illness outside of the drug addiction but neither one would do anything but allude to it and say that it wasn't there place to make it public. so, it was possibly either Rheumatoid arthritis or cancer from some of the speculations we've been through. Leukemia is something that the rumor said he was fighting for a long time. Could be, I find it strange they'd rather have him go down as a junkie rather than just spill all the beans. I just watched the video clip again, and Prince seemed good natured about it. However, Arsenio certainly didn't have to get so detailed about their partying days. If Arsenio had been a more skilled interviewer and had done more research he would have known that Prince was asked the "do you regret your more risque songs/days now that you're older" question a zillion times in past interviews. Just a useless question by 2014.

It's one thing to brag about attending a talk show where Prince was guesting (although Arsenio's show doesn't really warrant bragging rights - his show sucked), but to boldy emphasize incorrect grammar?? To each his own, I guess. Again, the translation is "him was dressed magnificently". Does that sound right? Anyone....anyone.... |

Yes, it was about him. Come on....you should know by now that Prince usually wrote about himself, his own life experiences with people, places, etc. He was too self-involved to write about someone elses life
*
I think that song was very personal and important to him. When he performed it at the 2013 Montreux show he appeared to be wiping tears at the end of the song. |

it was, however, i'm willing to think he used creative license like us songwriters do all the time, not everything is literal. it's such a sincere song though, it's a strange candidate for that but who here can picture prince showing up early for a party and staying late, sleeping over at strange places. |

That actually wasn't the first time I attended Arsenio's show. I was present at the new & old shows when Prince performed there in the 90's & COUNTLESS others. Arsenio was a GROUNDBREAKER & I supported him ALL along the way & will continue to support him.
Prince obviously loved him also or he wouldn't have granted him his last TV interview.
BTW The questions were pre-planned by the audience also. So Prince was aware of what was going to be asked.
I can't watch the interview it's too painful for me. But I'm glad I was in attendance which I will treasure for the rest of my life. Oh please.....Arsenio had a "moment" in the late 80's/early 90's as a talk show host, and then lost it, because he was not a good talk show host. Again, not much of a "bragging right". I attended one of Conan O'Brien's shows in NYC back in 2000 with Harrison Ford as the guest - Conan's still going, so there you go...
*
No kidding that the questions were pre-planned. That whole Q&A segment was ridiculous, and I felt badly for Prince that he had to go through it. Again, no wonder Arsenio's 2nd attempt failed.
*
Prince loved Arsenio??? Okay, sure. More like, either Prince owed him a favor (probably for the extended guest spots in the early 90's), or Prince wanted the media exposure at that particular time. [Edited 11/13/18 17:54pm] |
