To throw out an obscure suggestion I've never seen mentioned here: Gansevoort Hotel, nyc, 2008. It was a tiny venue, soundboard recording. The audio is so clear it's like he's in the room with you.
Not only would I love to have it in pristine condition, I think it's exactly the kind of live show that can turn a casual fan into a hardcore fan. And the MUSIC continues...forever... |

Right! The late 80's after shows are some of the best. He was young, energetic, extremely prolific and passionate about the music. He was in hard core constant creative mode and was still far from settling back into his "icon" status at concerts. Even the 93-95 period - both concerts and after shows were so good, because he was pissed off and rebelling against WB and their "pop star" process. I love those after shows too. He would do, say and play anything he wanted. The music still had that raw, biting sound to it.
Yep and the PR era Soundchecks are stellar |

How can you really compare?? His music, style, and demeanor were different in just about every 4 year span. He constantly changed. You just can't compare his 80's live shows to the 90's or 2000's. Everybody has their favorites, but he and his music/style were different. Even when he played his 80's classics in later years it was a different sound - it was more polished instead of "raw". It was good but not the same.

I agree with all of OF4S's choices plus Le New Morning 1987 and LoveSexy Tent Show...
I think you can objectively compare his live shows. The 80’s were all very tight well rehearsed shows. SOTT and Lovesexy were great tours and there were some great aftershows in 1988. But, from 2009-2013 there was a lot of variation, a lot of great aftershows, a lot of one off unique shows and a lot of hits for casual fans. He looked great, his bands were tight and they could play everything.
The comparisons of earlier times vs latter will always be a bit off balance, in that people get better and more skilled in their performing or should. I saw Glady's Knight a few years ago and it just seemed effortless. But her earliest show probably didn't seem effortless. But by 2010 she should be as an artist. Same with Prince. I don't think think though that the renditions of songs were always great. Some shows felt to much like a run through and Let's Go Crazy always never had the same punch that it did in 1984(for example) |

There was nothing liike seeing Prince live with new material. He was excited and so were we. I'd take those shows over any later years shows post 95, except maybe P&AM. TRUE BLUE |

and add 2001 ONA TRC aftershows. Yes, and I'd also add some of the 2013/early 2014 shows with 3EG. I'm not saying they were one of his great bands but he seemed excited playing more new material than he had for a while. And some of the older stuff like Something In The Water sounded fresh. . I saw him twice in Feb 2014 in Manchester and he was electrifying |

Another thought to this 80's vs 2000's comparison with the live shows - a great example is the song Bambi. To me, the '82 live performance at 1st Avenue is the best over any of the others - even the 1993 NPG Trio version. Prince is talking to the crowd "now listen, this is not a concert, this is a dance. If you can dance to this next song you're a better man than me". Then someone must have yelled out "thank you for coming", because then Prince says, "I haven't come yet baby!" The whole vibe is great - totally improvised, raw and fresh. Envious of the people who were there!! |

There's a SDB of this?? Was it released on any bootleg with a proper title? Sorry, I don't know what an SBD is. Soundboard, I assume? If so, then probably yes. All I know is, it's the clearest boot I've ever heard. No telltale rustle of clothing, normal audience noise. So I'm assuming soundboard because of the quality. It was up on mixcloud when I listened to it, though I didn't download anything. And the MUSIC continues...forever... |

I found it thx.
It's an audience recording not SDB, it's even written on the Mixcloud post. I fail to see how it could be the clearest boot you've ever heard unless you've never heard a SBD (soundboard indeed).
I'll download it though, if it's as remarkable a show as you say it's certainly worth a listen |

April 28th 2007 the last night at the Rio in Las Vegas was recorded. There were 2 cameras one on stage and the other on my right shoulder. I was irritated by the camera man puting the camera on my sholder, but kept telling myself it will be worth it when i get to see the video. On the way home on the plane, I was like what the hell, I was trying to stay positive then i realized it may never see the light of day. So far i was right still would love to see it. I am trapped in that monemt of time it was my best concert ever. I got to touch Prince's bass while he was playing it! |

No it's not from the book. I have no doubt Allen has more from the book though. I believe there was someone else there taking pictures.
