I apologise in advance for posting multiple times on this thread, but I need to get this one out.
I have just been listening to a recording of the Avalon show from 2009 and it made me so happy šŸ˜ƒ it also gave me pause,in that I can safely say Iā€™m reasonably well acquainted with Princeā€™s music, and yet I believe that his best live performances might yet be unheard of by us! shows from house parties at 77 Beverly Park or 3121 could well have sounded as good as the Avalon gig I spoke of, Prince playing for fun brilliantly and without his guard up!
And those Purple Rain era soundchecks where the band is off the hook, these to me are some of the best things I have heard in my life! And were it not for certain folk obtaining and treasuring certain domestic audio cassettes this music would almost certainly be gone for good.
My point is that I suspect that ā€œthe bestā€ we havenā€™t heard yet.

I consider his live perforance peak to be from 2009-2013. All of it was filmed and the sound quality is great. Lots of obscure stuff for the diehards and lots of hits for the casual fans. The possibilities for live box sets are limitless. We woudl all buy Montreux, North Sea, Welcome 2 America, the australia shows and much much more.

How can you really compare?? His music, style, and demeanor were different in just about every 4 year span. He constantly changed. You just can't compare his 80's live shows to the 90's or 2000's. Everybody has their favorites, but he and his music/style were different. Even when he played his 80's classics in later years it was a different sound - it was more polished instead of "raw". It was good but not the same.

Hey andrewm7 I totally agree with you. Prince alluded to the fact that the vault was a treasure trove in some interviews, giving a hint of such in his last interview with Arsenio Hall. I was blown away watching the Lovesexy Tour behind the scenes video on YouTube where he was instructing his musicians. The rehearsal stuff is brilliant - guard down, getting the soundcheck done, listening to everyone else all at once, not performing but 'at work' so to speak. Those people who worked with him were so, so, so fortunate.

I think you can objectively compare his live shows. The 80ā€™s were all very tight well rehearsed shows. SOTT and Lovesexy were great tours and there were some great aftershows in 1988. But, from 2009-2013 there was a lot of variation, a lot of great aftershows, a lot of one off unique shows and a lot of hits for casual fans. He looked great, his bands were tight and they could play everything.

87-88 was great. 92-93 not so great, but 94 was magnificent. I cannot name a five year period of better live performances than 2009-2013. Sounds like you cannot either.

There's also an old "behind the scenes" video of the LoveSexy tour that was professionally shot which has been circulating on YT for awhile now. Clips of stage rehearsals, after shows, musicians and band members interviewed about the tour and his music, etc. Been out for a long time.

Don't kid yourself. EVERY period of Prince's music was well rehearsed with EVERY band. When he wasn't recording or performing he was rehearsing - for hours and hours. This has been confirmed by just about all of his band members from all periods.

*

The Purple Rain concerts had to be tight, because they were following the story of the film. Same with SOTT and LoveSexy - he was telling a story within the music. However, during the extra long encores on the PR tour Prince majorly spread out and there was not only variation, but he was also playing songs from ATWIAD. Alan Light talks about his experience at a PR concert in his book. He and his friend decided to stay after most of the crowd had filed out, because they had a feeling the band wasn't done. They jumped rows to get closer to the stage, and a few minutes later Prince and band came back out and played America.

*

Was Prince more "polished" by 2009? Of course, as 30 years of constant performing would naturally enhance your ability. By that point, he was also able to employ the best technically skilled players available, but that doesn't always translate to the most inspired or unique performances.

Right! The late 80's after shows are some of the best. He was young, energetic, extremely prolific and passionate about the music. He was in hard core constant creative mode and was still far from settling back into his "icon" status at concerts. Even the 93-95 period - both concerts and after shows were so good, because he was pissed off and rebelling against WB and their "pop star" process. I love those after shows too. He would do, say and play anything he wanted. The music still had that raw, biting sound to it.
