Is it safe to say Batman is one of Prince's best 80s albums?

I love the Batman album by Prince. The songs are quirky and rock n' roll. Even the music videos are excellent ("Partyman").

Your thoughts?

It should be safe to state your opinion about any of Prince's music. To my estimation, it is all subjective.

Indeed, although one pretentious arsehole orger once took exception to me saying that it's subjective.

Which of these 80s albums is Batman better than?

1980 - Dirty Mind
1981 - Controversy
1982 - 1999
1984 - Purple Rain
1985 - ATWIAD
1986 - Parade
1987 - SOTT
1987 - The Black Album (original planned release)
1988 - Lovesexy

If you can rate Batman higher than at least half of those, then your answer is Yes.

Personally, I would say No. That is not to say it's not great, it is just not one of his "Best 80s" albums.

Batman is his weakest 80s album in my opinion.

It felt like a light outs after a flawless run of classics, Dirty Mind-Lovesexy.

I was so dissapointed and to this day it's one my least played P albums.

Batman isn't the best 80's album, but it sure is good! The Future, Electric Chair, Vicki's Waiting, Scandalous, Partyman, Lemon Crush and Batdance are all great songs!

I personally love this album. But I will admit my adoration is forever tied to the comic book geek in me riding high when the movie came out.

.

On its own... I don't know how high I'd be able to rank it. But the nostalgia kicks it up several notches in my Prince album rankings.

.

Still, it contains one of my favorite Prince songs, "Vicki Waiting". So that alone makes it worthwhile.

This will probably get me raked over the coals by the hardcore fans on the Org, but...

.

...I like "Batman" more than "Parade". Not to say I don't like "Parade"! But I enjoy "Batman" more. And again, like I said in a previous post, it's also because of the movie that I love it so much.

The Batman album is better than Lovesexy. 4 me Lovesexy was too nice and a bit vanilla.

In my opinion it's his worst album of the 80s - or any decade, really.

I misread the thread title as “Is it safe to say Batman is one of Prince's best 80 albums?”

I think it probably is up there in the oft-debated essential top 80 countdown.

I listened to Vicki Waited my three times in a row the other day. Such warmth and feel to that track, not to mention cool lyrics. I’m an Arms of Orion fan, too! Spare me trust and lemon crush, but the rest has real merit. Maybe even makes my own top twenty!

Everything from For You through Batman is perfect. I would include Graffiti Bridge, but it has other singers on it. There was a clear shift in his approach to music during Batman, and his 90s catalog is a whole other beast.

.

I rank it in DISTANT last place for the 80s, on my scale the marks out of 100 for each 80s album are

.

1. Sign o the Times - 98.3

2. Purple Rain - 95.6

3. Parade - 94.4

4. 1999 - 92.5

5. Lovesexy 91.1

6. Dirty Mind 90.0

7. ATWAID 85.6

8. Controversy 82.5

9. Black Album 76.3

.

10. Batman 60.0

Electric Chair, Future and Scandalous are great songs, Batdance, Partyman are good songs

Trust, Vicki Waiting are meh! to poor, Lemon Crush and Arms of Orion are the very worst songs he ever made on the same level as Da da da, The Plan, The Flow and Boytrouble.

It’s a great album.

It’s definitely in the top 9 for me (if we’re not including the Time or Family albums.

I'm curious how your scale works. Those ratings are extremely precise.

No, but I would say it's better than its reputation, i'd prefer it start to finish over every 90's album bar maybe Come.

It's not in the top half for me, but I still love it. I'd rank it right around Around the World in a Day, ahead of The Black Album but behind the others.

Without Batman? No Scandalous Sex Suite. And I rank that achievement amongst his finest moments of the 80's. Together with the standalone track of Scandalous. Possibly his best layered ballad. Adore is just ahead and The Beautiful Ones just behind

It's in his top ten for that decade (if you don't count the protegés' albums).
