Saw an early screening of this about a month ago.

"Mary Don't U Weep" closes the film perfectly and absolutely beautifully.

I sat there till it finished, too, loads of others were walking out.

I love how they keep saying they found this tape laying in the vault and it magically appeared and nobody knew about it - it's been circulating for years.

Yes, Petty Pendergrass, an entire thread with 700+ replies, filled of mostly complaints and the nerve of this guy not fact checking that the tape wasn’t newly discovered but sought after. If you were going to get your panties in a twist you could’ve at least linked him to the reply with the correct “Thus-said-The-Lord” info you carry at all times... For fuck’s sake!

That's what I was afraid of. Closing credits often just mean people walking out. I heard it was set to footage of the recent Charlotteville violence..if that is true, why didn't people stick around. I would.

Are you saying its the very last song being played when the last credits are being shown on the screen?

RS: BlacKkKlansman ends on footage from the August 2017 Charlottesville riots, of the moment a white supremacist drove into a crowd of counterprotesters, killing a young woman named Heather Heyer. Why did you decide to use it?

SL: Same thing. We started shooting in September. When Charlottesville happened, I knew that was going to be the ending. I first needed to ask Ms. Susan Bro, the mother of Heather Heyer, for permission. This is someone whose daughter has been murdered in an American act of terrorism — homegrown, apple-pie, hot-dog, baseball, cotton-candy Americana. Mrs. Bro no longer has a daughter because an American terrorist drove that car down that crowded street. And even people who know that thing is coming, when they see it, it’s like, very quiet. People sit there and listen to Prince singing a Negro spiritual, “Mary Don’t You Weep.” Did you hear the song at the end?

RS: I recognized his voice immediately. How did that happen?

SL: I knew that I needed an end-credits song. I’ve become very close with Troy Carter, one of the executives at Spotify [and a Prince estate advisor]. So I invited Troy to a private screening. And after, he said, “Spike, I got the song.” And that was “Mary Don’t You Weep,” which had been recorded on cassette in the mid-Eighties. Prince wanted me to have that song, I don’t care what nobody says. My brother Prince wanted me to have that song. For this film. There’s no other explanation to me. This cassette is in the back of the vaults. In Paisley Park. And all of a sudden, out of nowhere, it’s discovered? Nah-ah. That ain’t an accident [laughs]!

.

The tape wasn't "discovered", they actively went looking for it. See my post here: http://prince.org/msg/7/4...&pg=23 (BTW gotta love it that a month or so before the release a thread about an upcoming album has automatically been closed due to lack of activity.)

Just saw it last night. Was lovely to hear the song at the end, but really wish the movie had dug in a little deeper on its insane true story. I love Spike's documentaries - would have been better if he hadn't felt the need to Hollywood it up.

I read reviews of this movie and Prince's involvement is frustratingly not an event in their discussion. In other words, they mention the actor, the score, songs like Ball of confusion, the footage at the end, the script etc...no prince. Its almost like they are deliberately avoiding discussing the closing song. Maybe they didn't recognize that the singer was him. But even Kurt Loder's review doesnt' mention Prince and Kurt as a mtv correspondent used to kiss Prince's butt.

Just saw the film, and it's very good. Spike is at the top of his game. Also, I did like hearing "Mary Don't You Weep" during the closing credits, but I don't know how much it actually adds to the enjoyment of the film.

I think the song was a bit of an after thought. I believe the film was basically done and he just needed a song to play during the credits that echoed the sadness of the footage of Charlottesville..then Troy approached him with the song. I feared that a credit song would basically go a bit unnoticed. Even though, there are twitter comments about it being a lovely touch. None of the critics seemed to notice it. Hell, they might not even know its him or the history behind the recording. Too bad. A bit of a missed opportunity.

I can't dispute whether or not adding the song was an afterthought, but, after replaying the film in my mind, I can't think of any place where it would have worked (enhanced the aesthetic of the film), except maybe during the Harry Belafonte scene. So, I guess, since I didn't go to the film with any expectation of the song having any real, impactful, or monumental role, I am not as disappointed as you. But, then, again, I guess I must add that I think the releasing of the rehearsal as an album is a bit odd. Maybe it's because I've had this bootleg for at least twenty-five years that I'm not that interested in it being release since I think there is much better work to release. However, again, I didn't go to the film having much expectation of the song being prominent, which is probably why I'm not as disappointed. As such, I think the real missed opportunity is the Estate not finding more interesting work to release. But, I am glad that folks that have never had access to this work are finally getting it.
