Prince's darkest track?

I always associate prince with love and light and hope yet he has done some dark songs in his time what do you think is his darkest both in terms of lyrics and musically?

I'm just like everybody else I need love.....and water.

Dance with the devil. When I was on the PP tour in 2000...Femi was in Studio A telling Us about P recording. He said When P recorded Dance with the Devil it scared him and he erased the tape. I don’t know if he knew everybody in the room probably already heard it. So I don’t know if he re-recorded it or maybe he kept a cassette. Never really understood that story, but I agree.

On the surface level, "Bob George" really offends non Prince fan, and even scares them into saying it is too weird and drug induced. I am a witness.

Discussed a few years ago.

But I would say "Papa" is very personal. While not personal to his own experiences, "Another Lonely Christmas" tells a grim finality on a relationship.

"Wasted Kisses" or "I Love U But I Don't Trust U Anymore." Or, of course, "Dark".

Surprised no one has mentioned Shy.

Casual sex with a murderer. That's creepy.

Dance With The Devil. Rarely do I listen to that track. After 1 listen that's it for a while.

Papa, Solo, Bob George, Wasted Kisses...

Pheromone may appear 'dark' to some sexually in terms of its voyeurism and fetishes.

The original Old Friends 4 Sale is deeply personal and somewhat tortured.

Others Here With Us and Dance with the Devil are two unreleased tracks that have stereotypically 'dark' spiritual themes, although that is not the only way of perceiving them.

It's "Dance with the Devil." I've made this thread before, and said the same thing. Prince has songs that sound sad, forlorn, moody, hopeless, cynical, but none embrace evil the way "Dance with the Devil" does. Some may say it's too stereotypical or trying too hard, but it spooks me enough that I only listen to it on Halloween and never again for the year.

Others that come to mind:

- Anna Stesia

- Wasted Kisses

- Darling Nikki

- Old Friends 4 Sale

- God

- Pheromone

- One Nite Alone

- Avalanche

- If I Was Your Girlfriend

- Solo

- Shockadelica

- Power Fantastic

- Something in the Water (Does Not Compute)

- Electric Chair

- Digital Garden

- The Rainbow Children

- When Eye Lay My Hands on U

- Lady Cab Driver

- Anna Stesia

- Positivity

- Starfish and Coffee

- Thieves in the Temple (acoustic demo)

- Had U

- Curious Child

- The Human Body

No one’s mentioned possessed, but it used to freak me out the first few times I heard it, but then I realised it was just too funky!

It is a great thread, thanks for starting. And I also was unfamiliar with Dance with the Devil until now.

I’m surprised that no one has mentioned Sometimes It Snows In April. Another track that comes to mind is One of Your Tears. Neither one of these is his darkest track, but they both have dark themes.

Right. Upbeat, funky music is why I don’t think of Shockadelica as dark even though the lyrics are dark.
