"........very much a one-album deal .... we were just a distributor —

he delivered a finished album,

all done, and asked me to distribute it

— so it was very different from the normal [label/artist] relationship,

I cant really say I worked with him but

....He and I had a terrific one-on-one relationship

He was fascinated by music [business] issues: authorship,

ownership,

copyright,

compulsory licenses, and we spent hours talking about that

because he felt he had met someone who understood those things.

He was very educated about those things.

He said our conversations [about business] were so great and educational that they should be sold as CDs!

It was very warm — we hung out together during that period, we went to concerts."

"Prince was peerless as a musician, performer and songwriter.

He was clearly one of the all-time greats,

always mesmerizing,

magical and

cutting edge.

He was one-of-a-kind in every respect.

To know Prince personally was to know someone kind and gentle,

phenomenally brilliant and intellectually curious,

with every bone in his body loving music"

"We were on a flight from Minneapolis to Los Angeles,

about a three-and-a-half-hour flight,

and we'd been up pretty late the night before,

but he wanted to go out to record.

On the plane, [he's] asking for pads and paper,

and so I get him a notebook and pen and he starts writing,

and he writes a poem and he hands it to me.

And I read it and I go,

"Well, you know, that's nice…sounds clever, good."

I hand it back to him.

Ten minutes, 15 minutes later, he hands me another poem.

I'm like, "Oh yeah, that's just as good as the first."

And I'm like, "Why does he keep handing me these poems?"

This goes on for the whole flight, and we land and he says,

"Do you mind if we go to the studio?"

—he was always cordial—

and I'm like, you know, "You can do whatever you want to do."

And he says,

"Well, I'll just be there for a few hours, and then we'll head to the house."

And so we go to the studio.

We were in there for three days, almost four days, straight.

When he's finished, I go into the studio and I'm listening to the music.

I asked him on the way home:

"Did you have all that in your head?

Not just the lyrics, not just the music,

not just the melodies, but the arrangement, everything?"

And he said,

"Yeah, you know, I have to get it out when it's in there or I can't sleep."

He had written [the first two album sides of] Sign o' the Times.

He had basically written an album in a three-and-a-half-hour plane ride."

“I feel like I learned so much about myself as a person and as a performer,” .

He just really pushed me to step outside of my comfort zone,

"I was playing with Frank McComb in a club in LA ....

Prince came to see us;

I got a chance to meet him in the break. It was crazy,

we’d just finished a set and here I was talking to Prince.

The way he talked about music was incredible and

so much of what he said resonated and I thought,

even at the time, that I would take what he said with me.”

3121 was Coleman-Dunham's first recording with Prince.

3121 was Coleman-Dunham's first recording with Prince.

"I found out that he wanted to buy me a kit and that
I could have whatever I wanted. ....
we worked out a spec for the kit, which turned out fabulous.
...then I got a call asking me to go up and play with Prince – he ended up putting a band together for some aftershow parties and that was when I started playing with him for real.
it was the Grammys, or Academy Awards and things like that.
An amazing experience.”

He’s a remarkable talent, and he can sit with anyone

– producers, engineers, guitarists, piano players,

and talk to them in their own language.

It’s the result of a lifetime of working in and absorbing music.”

“Prince just loves to play"

"Josh and I have had nothing but the greatest time being

associated with Prince's organization,

He is so smart and so unbelievably talented.

I think some of the people who maybe get let go for whatever reason

tend to go negative about it,

probably because of some problem that's their own,

not his,

like being late for gigs or rehearsals,

some drama or other that's really their own rather than something he did."

“Having a bandleader that plays several instruments

has its advantages and disadvantages,”

“He’ll get behind the kit and say,

‘OK, you can roll on that snare at the beginning.

Then make a clean break or let it linger.

When he sits down and plays, he’s really saying,

‘This is the energy that I want; approach it like a big fat man.

Smash it like a big, fat dude!’

So you think,

‘OK, big, fat dude on drums’.

It’s relentless.”

“This was my first real boyfriend,

so I was tripping on all the emotional ecstasy

most girls get out of their system in high school.

Prince loved that I was so in love with being in love.

I’d never had my heart broken,

so I was open and unjaded.

Any old trick in the romance handbook

—a candlelit bubble bath,

rose petals on the sheets,

a sexy handwritten letter—none of the novelty had worn off for me.

I was thrilled with all the small gestures of affection,

and he enjoyed being appreciated.

There wasn’t much drama between us,

but I discovered that, if anything,

I danced better when I was mad, so we always ended up laughing it off after the show.

Somewhere around this time, he wrote a song called “Courtin’ Time”

that came out later on the Emancipation album,

and I was touched to hear an instrumental version

on a concert video just a few years ago.”

[...] Thankfully, we can cherish the 2007 memory of Prince’s performance, because, let’s face it, nothing will ever top it.

.......

The 2007 Super Bowl XLI saw the Indianapolis Colts trump the Chicago Bears 29-17, but perhaps the most victorious entertainment of the evening came from the Purple One himself.

.

“Can you make it rain harder?” Prince asked the production managers of the halftime event, hours before he was to perform the biggest performance of his career. It was one of those heavy, tropical rain and wind storms in the heart of Miami; but for Prince, it was a dramatic advantage to the pivotal performance that carried in over a 100 million television viewers alone.

.

“I was panicked. Prince was using four separate electric guitars; the stage was made out of a very slick tile, which when it got wet, was even more slippery,” explained one of the production managers. Along with the dancers, their heels, and all other electronic aspects involved, the state of the performance had a lot of reasons to worry.

.

Yet, Prince, obviously, pulled through with one of the most epic halftime performances of all time. His guitar ringing, his voice soaring, and his overall demeanor taking the audience by storm; the rain became less of a distraction and more of an intensely beautiful spectacle.

.

“He’s just one performer shaking the entire world,” described Jon Pareles, Senior Music Critic of the NY Times. Ultimately, Prince turned the horrific weather into his most powerful prop, mixing covers by Queen, The Foo Fighters, and Bob Dylan with originals hits like “Let’s Go Crazy” and “Purple Rain”. [...]
