Greatest Prince Guitar Solo (On Record not Live)

What would you consider princes greatest guitar solo (On Record not Live)

Mine would be the solo on "Batdance."

Not ready to answer, but I’ll offer some candidates :)

“Not” Purple Rain ... Because the man did more than just Purple Rain.

1. Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad - early glimpse into that sweet, sweet vibrato he had, nice run, harmonized at the end. Bonus points for playing it fingerstyle in the video lol

2. I’m yours - over 1/2 the song is the outro solo. Lots o’ widdly widdly wees, riffing and not losing the groove. (Probably not going to be my pick, but fun guitar)

3. Dreamin about U - yeah, it’s a bass solo, but it’s very “Jaco’ish” and is so melodic and dreamy. Half point deduction for playing it on the guitar.

4. I Will - Prince solo, “by the numbers”. Melodic, little run, queue the Wah and Whammy, end on the perfect note. Nice, but likely not my final pick.

5. Question of U - 16 measures of the funkiest minor key, B minor. Phrasing, thematic, just a touch of Wah in the last bar. Choice.

6. I wish U Heaven - short, 7 measure solo. Put your headphones on and you hear 3 guitar parts. The main part, just a clean, “jazzy” run. Showing he didn’t have to rely on gain and Wah to play a tasty solo.

7. I Could Never Take The Place of Your Man - 1st and 2nd solos. Two for one. 1st solo, great build up, fast & sloppy fun, emotive high notes to make guitar faces. 2nd solo, just grooving with a few guitar parts, but they create the perfect atmosphere to bring bac the main line and end the song.

8. Computer Blue - the Wendy part of the solo (you know what I’m talking about) plus Fathers song melody. Classic. Build up with perfect ending. This likely is my pick.

I've always been particularly fond of 'pink cashmere'...I love the way it blends with the strings. Often, when I'm whistling either the solo or the strings, I can go back and forth seamlessly. It's a lot like what I think he was talking about with his 'new Minneapolis sound' shortly before he died...

I also quite like the very brief solo in 'friend lover sister mother/wife'.

Too many great ones to choose, but maybe I can pick a few that don't get much love:

Funny thing is, I love a lot of Prince's sloppier, earlier solos before he kinda learned a bit more musically. Stuff like the 12" extended Drive Me Wild, it's a bit "wrong" in places and I love that about it.

I love the tiny solo on "Time Waits 4 No One". Just perfect.

Batdance often gets overlooked but some great guitar work on there.

Peach has some great solos - a bit sloppy in places but I love how live it feels. Except for that weird stereo panning bit.

Strays of the World has some epic in-the-pocket shredding. The song I could take or leave, but some great guitar.

She Spoke 2 Me. I guess that might be Levi on the solo, but it's great so it deserves a mention.

Witness. I know Prince could stuff like that out without really thinking about it, but I love it.

Some others... Shockadelica, Electric Chair, Live 4 Love.... The Everlasting Now

The song "PlectrumElectrum" has stellar guitar work. It's basically a 4 minute 38 second guitar solo. I don't know if all of the guitar solos are Prince, but whomever did them, the solos are excellent!

I don’t think they are but it’s easy to tell which is Prince vs Donna as he was so much better than she was.

I used to rewind the cassette and listen to the brief but cool guitar solo on “Miss Thang” a lot back in 1991.

How can only the OP list Batdance? Have you people actually listened to that solo lately? Forget about whether you like the song or not, the solo can riaise the dead. Agree with the OP, one of his best hands down.

Yes. Yes. YES!!!

I love Alexa de Paris. The music is so incredibly joyful - a happy, hopeful man wrote that.

The solo on God (Instrumental) aka Love Theme From Purple Rain is sensational. Just listen.

Further I really love the solos on Another Lonely Christmas and Rock Hard In A Funky Place

Previously mentioned:
- The short solo on Time Waits 4 No One by Mavis Staples gives me goose bumps each and every time I listen to it.

- Joy in repetition ; studio solo is a stunner (also listen to the second guitar noodling and Prince adlibbing "Love Me" and more in your right ear). This song must have meant a lot to him. I cried when I witnessed the perfect rendition at North Sea Jazz in 2011 but that's another story wink

Since I can't include the full extended guitar version of "Crucial", because it hasn't been officially released, then I will have to give the extended version of "Paisley Park" my vote.

.

A very very close second is the solo from "I Could Never Take The Place Of Your Man".

Good question, seeing as he perversely downplayed his guitar soloing on studio releases in general.

.

Here's one that came to mind that's awesome: "BOOM"

I’ve been informed that my opinion is worth less than those expressed by others here.
