Would Kiss be as popular if Prince didn't sing it in falsetto? Had Prince sung Kiss in his natural, Purple Rain era voice, would it have been as popular at the time, or continue to be the enduring classic that it is today? A certain kind of mellow.

That's a good question. I would say Yes, because Kiss got a catchy beat tho. I mean, three seconds (at best) and this song gets you and you can't help but dance.

Didn't Tom Jones answer that question when he remade it in his lower register? Welcome to "the org", laytonian… come bathe with me.

And sometimes a jokey version of a well known song can become a hit. Like Cliff Richard & The Young Ones with Living Doll...

I hate the falsetto on this one. It's really thin and loses itself sometimes. When he gets into his normal register in little parts her and there, it's so much more solid. So yeah, it would have been just as big. Sorry, it's the Hodgkin's talking.

Kiss is one of those songs I don't really listen to with headphones - it works better with speakers, loud speakers, perferably in a dance floor setting.
I think that Kiss sung in a deeper voice would still be good, and a little easier on the ears, but it's still great. [Edited 1/2/18 19:56pm] A certain kind of mellow.

Maybe if he sung it in the same register but in full voice. The falsetto is so pure that the vocals are almost second to thectesckb

You take any element away from "Kiss" - the main rif, the groove, the ultra-classy lyrics, or the vocal - it loses its charm. It's one of Prince's most carefully and perfectly constructed singles. The falsetto is perfect for the song - it makes Prince sound more playful and less intimidating.

Brilliant - the incorporation of Cliff Richard and The Young Ones into that answer is absolutely spectacular.

The Tom Jones/Art of Noise version is in no way a joke - I knew that version before I knew the Prince one and absolutely loved it, as did other members of my family.
The Living Doll remake was an actual joke song - this was not.

I've always wished for a falsetto version of I Love U In Me and Nothing Compares To U.
How about a bass voice version of Pink Cashmere. That would be interesting. I'm sure prince would have played about with such things. [Edited 1/3/18 8:20am]

The acoustic demo version was in his normal register and I think it would have been just as good, IMO.

Most of us dig Kiss, but am I the only one who gets embarrassed if other people are around when he does the "ain't no particular sign, I'm more compatible with" scream?
I be like...jeez. Why did he have to do that?

Tony Christian did a lower register on the Mazarati version.
IDK, I cannot imagine the song without the falsetto

Tom Jones and the Art Of Noise definitely knew they were being cheeky. Imagine if Michael Bolton and the Chainsmokers released a cover of the Weeknd's "Starboy". It would be perceived as a joke no matter how much people loved it or how well it did.

I like Kiss the way Prince recorded it. It's got a funky beat, James Brown style. His voice is sexy and sultry and he builds up the climax at the end when he screams. Love it!!

I enjoy reading Trivial's posts but you have to consider the source. On the Tom Petty thread he started out with "I hate his voice, so much", before compliments and RIP. "if you can't clap on the one, then don't clap at all"

Listen to Kiss #1 and decide for yourself. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

That scream is not embarrassing at all, it's a brilliant Prince scream! The entire song is brilliant, which is why it's one of his most enduring hit songs. Live 4 Love ~ Love is God, God is love, Girls and boys love God above
