This is the original '84 version. I bet the 1991 version is more like Sinead O' Connor's version, like the ' 92 live version he released on The Hits 1.

I find it strange that the 1991 cut is even listed on Princevault.

.

Alan Leeds said that Prince had cut it http://thelastmiles.com/i...-leeds.php

BUT...

Eric Leeds said that Prince didn't wanna have nothing to do with it, had Eric do it and didn't add any music on it (that Eric knew of) before sending it to Miles: http://www.thelastmiles.c...-part2.php

.

Obviously, Eric's version would have to more informed, therefore closer to the truth, than Alan's.

It's not clear if Prince added something to Eric's version or not:

.

"Prince looks at me and says: “Why don’t do you some tracks for him?” So I said: “He’s not asking me – he’s asking you!” And Prince says “Yeah, but I want to give him something”. “So I said “What do you want me to do?” and Prince said “Just go in the studio and have some fun and do something and send it to him. I’ll check it out first.” It was like “Maybe you can come up with something that I can then do some stuff with.” He left it open like that. Somehow it had been intimated that Miles was interested in Prince’s song “Nothing Compares 2 U,” so Alan suggested I do a track on that, so I did and a little thing of mine I called “Frame of Mind.”"

.

But PrinceVault lists this version as being by Prince only ("Prince - all instruments (assumed)"), which is incorrect.

Yes and No. The album version is simply an overdubbed version of #1. #2 is a less overdubbed version than the album version.

it speaks to the way his mind worked, that he would go back to those 2 parts of orchestration
just for those few snippets in Face Down. seems like he had a lot of that vault stuff ready in
his head for future reference. i mean, instead of just adding some keyboard strings he went
to the trouble of diggin up those old tapes and sampling them? damn.

This is incredible. In-fucking-credible.

17 Days is better than I expected.

Nothing Compares 2 U gives me chills.

But it's the demos of Sister that I find remarkable. I never imagined I'd get such an insight into his creative process. It stopped me dead when he finished the second one with "Oh Sister, I love u."

My Quick review on first listen:

Sister #1, 2, 3

Three acoustic takes of this one, the third instrumental. A neat curio, but let's get to the real shit.

17 Days extended

Bout Time. What's Brenda saying about her vagina in the second half? Gotta say, it's a TRIP hearing the song NOT fade out where it's "supposed to". Definately a keeper and now everyone can shut the fuck about that fake 13 minute fanedit.

A Million Miles

A Major upgrade to the copy we've had all these years. And it's a minute longer, fading out just before the jam part. Thumbs up!

High Fashion / Mutiny

Finally some good sound quality from these Family sessions. Major upgrades. Mutiny doesn't seem as good quality as High Fashion, but is still an improvement from any of the previously circulating copies.

Nothing Compares 2 U

GOOSEBUMPS~! Thank you, thank you, thank you. Christmas came early. If this had been all that leaked today, it was worth it.

The Screams of Passion

Sounds marginally clearer than the kind of flat sounding previous leak at first listen, but I'm not A/Bing them right now for detail. Nice to finally have this to go with the rest of this album's songs that have been circulating since the 90s.

Feline

At first play, this is a bit brighter than the previous leak?

Desire

A Good Sounding Copy of this one has been a holy grail for me for 25 years or more. This, while not perfect, is miles better than any copy I've ever heard. Now if someday, the long alternate mix of "Yes" would appear in this quality, I can rest easy.

Others Here With Us [Clare Fischer Mix]

This still sounds wrong. Nice quality though. Is the orchestra not Quite as loud here, compared to the previous leak? I don't have that one handy to compare at the moment.

New Position [Clare Fischer]

This is a TRIP right here. This is obviously an "Orchestra Up" mix - If Prince had decided to use any of this, it Obviously wouldn't be this loud.

Til the fat lady sings

I liked this when it first started circulating, and it sounds fine here. I'd hoped it would be longer this time, but it's still a very cool piece.

Cosmic Day Excerpt

Quit playin.

Yo Mister

This is cool to have. Nice quality too.

Anna Stesia

Crisp sound. Similar to released version minus the orchestration and overdubs, until the second half - lots of different lyrics. Thank you for this one.

Eye No #1

Wow, this is way stripped down, or rather pre-kitchen-sink-overdubs. I've thought about hearing this one this way for YEARS. A Horns Up mix though, with the vocals pretty low, unless those are all supposed to be part of the background and not lead. Either way, Neat thing to have here. Fades out before the scene that bridges this to Alphabet St.

Eye No #2

Thank you to whoever leaked this set, for doing stuff like giving us Eye No at two different stages of development. This one is still minimalist, missing a LOT of overdubs, but yet it now has the party crowd in the background, and his Court proving some backing and response vocals. The mix is more balanced here too, vs #1 where the horns overpowered everything else. This is definately a keeper here.

Glam Slam

Whoever has been sitting on all of these Lovesexy early takes, I'd like to shake your hand. There's nothing here that really replaces the final album versions, but for those of us who've wondered what it was like under the mountain of overdubs this album has, these cuts are a treasure, and some of the most interesting studio material to leak out in years. This particular one isn't too far from the final album version, but does have an extra bit in the coda.

Positivity #1

Now here we go. There's some FUNK in this track. This was an understated "last song on the album", despite the layers of vocals and instrumentation that it recieved. Here it's stripped clean, with just some help from his Court and himself on harmonies and yet includes a great bass riff that didn't make the later mixes. Different lead vocal, and the whole vibe is very Sly Stone. No "Shall the court sing together?" part yet. Thumbs Up. But we've got two more takes here, let's see where it takes us.

Positivity 2

The snare in this version is rather annoying. The lead vocal from the album appears, the bassline from #1 is gone. Still missing several layers of instrumentation, has most of the backing vocals in place. As I said above, it's interesting to hear these naked Lovesexy takes. Oh, that's interesting. This version fades out, and then comes back for some "bonus beats" at the end.

And Positivity #3

Oh right, this one leaked earlier this year and was a major upgrade to the years old bad copy we've had, and it is my default copy now. Sounds as good here. I don't know how you all feel about it, but I dig the JM Silk verse. Very close to the album mix, but including Cat. She must have REALLY liked that verse tho, ay? She did it on "Cindy C", and when that album gets cancelled, she drops it in here, and almost got away with it too, till P found out she didn't write it. Anyway, yeah. Good thing to have if you didn't catch it earlier this year.

Escape

And closing out the Lovesexy era in this collection is an early mix of this b-side. Different drum track, some extra horns, yet still missing some overdubs, in both instrumentation and backing vocals. No party crowd in the background either, which makes it sound twice as naked. I've always loved this song, and it's cool to hear it here. GUITAR SOLO! This take is shorter than the released 12'' version, but includes a lot of parts in the second half that didn't make the final cut. This is a gem.

Cool Love

This is a cool track, but APPEARS TO BE A HEAVILY PROCESSED COPY OF THE MONO-FIED VERSION THAT POPPED UP EARLIER THIS YEAR? Sounds worse than the mono-fied, and Way worse than the true stereo snippet that circulates. Thumbs DOWN.

Sticky Wicked, Also.

Same title, completely different song. This one given to Chaka. Great vocal from P on this one. Great sound Q too.

Love 89

One for Miss Patti. I love Patti Labelle, to my soul, but P could have kept this one for himself. A couple minutes longer than Patti's version. Guitar solo. This could have been a highlight of the Batman album.

Big House

This is a title that I've known about forever, but a copy never crossed my path. This snippet is fairly uneventful.

Bang Bang

P's vocal version of the Brown Mark number. It's decent. I've never actually heard Mark's version, so this is new to me. It's ok.

Red Scarlett

This sounds like it would have been right at home on the Emancipation set. Not this stripped down, of course. I like this. Did anyone even know about this song before?

The Voice

Sounds the same or similar to the same old good copies we've had.

Love 2 The 9s

An unused single mix.

Sexy MF

A variation on the 12'' Remix - this doesn't include Tony M's rap, if that helps. It still doesn't need to be nine minutes long though.

My Name Is Prince

This is similar to the "Original Mix Edit" that appears on the 12'' Single, but with about 30 seconds more of the "I wanna be your lover, partyup, controversy" loop at the beginning. The hi-hats aren't as prominent on this copy, but overall, you've heard this one.

Playtime

I knew a studio version of this one had to exist. Cool to have. Some heavy NR on the intro though.

and I'll let someone else tackle the later stuff, as I'm less familar with it and it's been a long night. This is a stellar collection, full of interesting material, and the leaker(s) are to be commended. The only track I'll need off the upcoming money set is the unedited "If The Kid Can't Make U Come". It will leak, so save your bread.

Thank you, this is a wonderful gift with some real gems in it.

Yall need to quit bullshittin on that Cosmic Day tho. razz

Cheers and Merry Christmas.

The stripped back version of Anna Stesia is now on repeat.

"Please take us back and hold our hand and lead us to Lovesexy land."

I'd love to know how long it was between this and the final song. This version is great, but I wish I was able to understand how his creative mind worked in order to edit, rework and twist this into the sublime final cut.

IT'S CHRISTMAS - - - O. M. G. !!!

biggrin))))))))

-

My peeps for the raw and absolutely stunning DEMO VERSIONS of SISTER. (after 47 years!!!)

-

I can't wait to mix them together and remix that again with the released song.

-

'17 Days' and 'A Million Miles' take me RIGHT BACK to 1984... this is the love I needed !

THANK U , you Prince-Elite-Fan(s) for finaly releasing this to all of us, after aaaaaallll these years.

-

How hard FELINE can funk it up with just the softest drum beat ever, and that sax, Prince's (Sheila) rap and organ... and then that freaky laugh at the end !

-

Big LOVE for Clare Fisher's 'New Position' mix... ab-so-lu-te-ly stunning orchestration.

Prince's should've done an ablum completely with Clare Fisher's orchestration alone. Ohmygod.

It's a shame that Clare Fisher's orchestration is mixed way out in the background of 'When The Fat Lady Sings'...

-

'Love 89' should've been the opener of side two of the Lovesexy album - superb Prince multi-vocals, and those screams... and what a pace. "Nuff said, brass...", pure gospel-funk.

-

...and on and on with the funk of 'Bang Bang' - a hundred times better than Brownmark's version.

Again, I love Prince's multi-layered-vocals every time, and, great innovative breaks throughout the song... I missed that.

-

'Red Scarlett' doesn't do it for me, except for the vocals. Prince's voice is so unique.

-

'Playtime' could've been a great song. But this demo is just a little too little..

-

best xmas present ever
