For those of you who are keeping up with the podcasts that Duane is doing, Grown Folks Music released part 2 of our conversation with him today.

In this episode, we primarily discuss the book, Prince and the Purple Rain Era Studio Sessions: 1983 and 1984. We are very excited that Duane’s book is the subject of our inaugural episode of Grown Folks Music's Behind The Book podcast series. We are extremely honored to have Duane Tudahl, the author of Prince and the Purple Rain Era Studio Sessions: 1983 and 1984, and Miss TLC, the creator of Princeversaries on Twitter join GFM’s The Love Man and Polished Solid for this conversation.

You can also listen on Stitcher:

https://www.stitcher.com/...e/52608599

or iTunes:

https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/gfm-podcast-network/id1085920009?mt=2

Our original conversation lasted almost 6 hours so we decided to split the conversation into two separate episodes and also two separate podcast series. However, keep in mind, that both episodes and shows will be the same conversation so we’re hoping you’ll also listen to part one of the conversation, GFM’s Inside The Album Podcast: Purple Rain Deluxe, as well.

To hear part 1 of the conversation visit SoundCloud:

or Stitcher (part 1)

We strongly recommend madhouseman do a Studio Sessions trilogy à la Star Wars.

Book IV: Prince and the Purple Rain Era Studio Sessions: 1983 and 1984

Book V: Prince and the Parade/Sign o' the Times Era Studio Sessions: 1985 and 1986

Book VI: Prince and the Lovesexy/Batman Era Studio Sessions: 1987 and 1988

Book I: Prince and the For You Era Studio Sessions: 1977 and 1978

Book II: Prince and the Prince/Dirty Mind Era Studio Sessions: 1979 and 1980

Book III: Prince and the Controversy/1999 Era Studio Sessions: 1981 and 1982

Book VII: Prince and the Graffiti Bridge/Diamond and Pearls Era Studio Sessions: 1989 and 1990

Book VIII: Prince and the Prince logo.svg Era Studio Sessions: 1991 and 1992

Book IX: Prince and the Come/The Gold Experience Era Studio Sessions: 1993 and 1994

Come on Duane, whad'ya say? lol

That would be amazing. But the reason he concentrated on 83-84 is that Prince used Sunset Sound and production notes are on record there. We have nothing for Paisley Park.

I have a lot of the notes for 81-88 and some dates from other studios. As these projects come out, I'm hoping that more information is revealed so I can create further books as well as update this if necessary. Paisley Park work orders exist somewhere. Wouldn't it be great if this project caught on and his entire career was documented properly?

Yesterday my copy of the book was supposed to arrive, together with PR Deluxe (including DVD). To my great disappointment I only found the latter in my letterbox. Plus a notification from the package delivery service which told me that I was not at home at the moment of delivery, but unfortunately none of the boxes on the form were ticked or filled out. So I had no idea if the package was delivered at one of my neighbours, or that they would come another day to try again or that my order had been shipped back to Amazon. Annoying AF as I had really been looking forward to playing the CD's while reading the book! So instead I decided to play the Syracuse DVD which was fun to watch.

Early this morning though -when I left home for work- I found another delivery service notification on the floor next to my door, which said the package was delivered at no. 81. Apparently I hadn't noticed this second notification the day before when I came home, I just found the CD's and the empty notification. Which meant: "Damn, I could have read the book already yesterday if I had noticed the second notification immediately!!!" lol

Anyway, glad to have it, as tonight I finally enjoy the book as planned, listening to PR Deluxe. cool

Is there any prefered place to purchase this from?

I've read confusing posts across the internet with some people saying it came with a dust jacket and some not, some being perfect bound and some not.

Personally I'd love to have a hardback with a dust jacket if it really does exist.

Once this 'confusion' is resolved I'll purchase asap.

Thank you!!

lol lol lol

I am at the mazarati part and am craving to listen to all mentioned songs in order.

(does anyone already has a cue file or list made?)

One of the surprising take aways I had from this book was the effort in taping and editting (1/8 slices)

Wow! Just finished the book. It took me a couple weeks because I paced myself and spent a lot of time digging into to some of the references, listening to the music discussed and digesting the information. It was worth it.

This book is an excellent blend of compelling narrative and nerdy details. By that I mean that it satisfied my desire for the minutae of facts while simultaneously telling an engrossing story that maintains interest, never allowing the details to sterilize the narrative.

I've read over 2 dozen books on Prince and this one is definitely up there in the top 3. If The Vault is a "bible" this is a "text book". Not a boring one but rather the favorite one that you leave on your bookshelf at semester's end, instead of selling it back to the bookstore, because you know you'll go back to it as a reference again and again.

It's also the perfect liner notes to Purple Rain Deluxe (and Ice Cream Castle, The Glamorous Life, Apollonia 6, The Family and Around The World In A Day). funkaholic1972 had the right idea getting them together.

Any book that can satisfy the nerd in me without sacrificing momentive of the narrative is a win for me and this one did so spledidly!

I absolutely cannot wait for "1985-1986" and every other edition that comes after. Consider me pre-sold for any and all of them. Thank you so much, Duane! I'll cherish this one.

Also wanted to mention, while waiting to get this book I listened to the interviews you did with The Prince Podcast, Peach & Black, Dr. Funkenberry & Grown Folks Music. Everybody should go check those out! They're all on my must-listen subscription list and your interviews were terrific.

Many people have requested signed books so I’ve got some cool news! Starting today, I am putting a very limited number of autographed books for sale on my website, https://www.duanetudahl.com/order-page.

I only have about 250 books available for me to sign and number and 100 are already spoken for, so I don’t know how long this offer will last and I really want to make sure that those who want one get a copy.

They are available for US and International delivery.

Needless to say I’m excited to finally have this available. Thank you again for everything and for all the inspiration.

(IT LOOKS LIKE THIS THREAD IS LOCKED UP. HOW CAN I RESPOND TO THE QUESTIONS? THANK YOU)

I wholeheartedly agree with this review! I've spend the last week and a half reading the book, chilling on my couch, with PR Deluxe and most of the other albums and songs mentioned in this book in a huge playlist, playing at random. I am nearing the end of the book now and I just caught myself breaking a little sweat realising the next volume of this planned series of books isn't out yet. I am getting ready for some serious withdrawal effects! Please continue this series Duane as the first volume was excellent.

RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...
