There are indeed a lot of bad Prince books, but don't overlook Let's Go Crazy (2014) by Alan Light, which is a wonderful recounting of the c.1983-1985 Purple Rain-era recordings and movie. It's outstanding, though it sounds like (based on a cursory glance) this new one goes into finer detail about the recording sessions.

.

Alan's book pathetically barely talks about how the music was created, but does spend an entire chapter on his memories of watching the movie in theatres.

.

His book is a retread of already well-worn stories; if he did any interviews for it, he didn't go beyond the usual suspects and never bothers to challenge their stories. There are some jarring inserts of new information in the text, mostly published by local Minneapolis publications who did bother to look up people who were involved in the movie but weren't interviewed previously. Funny how they managed to dig up new stories while Light just rehashes "the greatest hits".

.

IMHO the book is at best a compilation of a bunch of information, but if you're spending money, spend it on books like Per Nilsen's DMSR.

The coupon is for the publisher, not for Amazon. It is another way of getting the book, but at a discount. I want everyone who wants to get a copy to have a way of getting it.

Pre-ordered from Amazon myself--I wish this release were going more smoothly. You've been whetting my appetite for years with this thing, madhouseman--I'm ready for the actual feast. Any idea on when we'll get it from them? (If you've given information somewhere else, Duane, I haven't seen it).

Thank you for asking! I've been told that it should get to Amazon this Tuesday. Again, this is what I've been told by the publisher. Since I only write the book, I don't print or ship it, I have to rely on their word for this. Supposedly the publisher has their copies and will be shipping them out very soon as well to people who ordered them directly from the publisher. It sounds like the hardcover versions will be arriving next week sometime, but I'm sure that Thanksgiving isn't going to help when it comes to deliveries.

I've been waiting for everyone to read this for 20 years, so I feel your frustration! lol

I can't wait to hear everyone's reactions. Thank you again, and I hope this helps.

The expanded version of my book PRINCE and The Purple Rain Era Studio Sessions 1983-1984 was released in November 2018. (www.amazon.com/gp/product/1538114623/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_bibl_vppi_i0) or www.facebook.com/groups/1...104195943/

Finished reading it over the weekend. Bought it from google play as an epub. Will go for the hardcover in a local bookstore later on.

.

It was well worth the wait. It is more a story of Prince's life than what you'd expect if you are used to the Beatles Sessions. Of course, they had their administration properly done, which allows more detail. Also, they had many more takes and less tracks. smile

.

Duane, thank you so much.

.

However, there is a BIG problem with this book. I now cannot wait for 85/86 and 87 (less interested in 88 onward for now).

.

What's the advance that's needed to let Duane drop everything else he's got going on? razz

I cannot wait to get my hands on this book. I look forward to reading people's thoughts on the book. Finally a book about Prince after his death that is not exploitative and self-serving by an ex-wife or other associate.

Still, I recommend Light's book to everyone. Not only is it the fantastic story of Prince's finest hour, it also has a chapter discussing the confluence of pop-culture and pop-music in 1984 that was unique in American history, and which contributed to the Purple Rain phenomenon.

Can be found here:

https://www.amazon.com/Lets-Go-Crazy-Prince-Making/dp/147677675X/ref=la_B00CBKO4O0_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1510966988&sr=1-1

Alan Light's book is serviceable. It haven't read the entire book but he didn't speak much on the music itself rather, he focused more on the movie and pop cultural significance he had (which was nice too).

The chapter I enjoyed the most is the one in which he speaks in PR's pop cultural significance and talks succinctly about the mainstream music landscape of the time and where the album fit in. I'd love to see him write a book dedicated to the subject of 1984's music scene; if there's anyone out there who could truly speak on that spectacular year in music, it's him.

Agreed! The entire first several chapters are filled with the backstory and behind the scenes of the 1999 tour. Never before published interviews highlight the story of the world of those around Prince, and Vanity 6's and The Time's stories are very well documented. In fact, there are details about songs recorded for Vanity 6's second album as well as songs for The Time that were released years later.

I'm looking forward to people reading about how closely related their stories were with Prince's.

Not sure which quote you are talking about but there were two BBC docs that were quoted and both are worth your time.

Prince, A Purple Reign, produced by BBC, documentary, 2011,

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LlTwe9LxZ8w

and

Purple Reign: The Story of Prince, part 2, BBC Radio, January 25, 2003, http://www.bbc.co.uk/prog...s/b00svtj7

I think the second link is no longer valid, but it may be on youtube or floating around if you are trying to find it.

Hope you enjoyed the book.

I definitely need to re-read Let's Go Crazy in light of your comments because I remember it being well written, concise and focused. Yes there was a lot of re-threading of familiar stuff but that only makes sense since it was focusing on Prince's most famous period.

Compared to the likes of Matt Thorne's "here's my tedious description of and opinion on loads of unreleased songs" or utter dreck like Chaos, Disorder and Revolution I would generally consider it a better introduction than even DMSR for any new fan.

If you go to the top of the forum page, you'll see the names of the mods there. You can pick one, but go with either Luv, or Old Friends 4 Sale, Langebleu, or Militant (because we see them here frequently) and send an org note asking them to sticky this thread.
