I think of it as the 6th cd from Crystal Ball - a mixture of songs rather than a cohesive album.

come had commercial play? I wouldn't know, i never listened to much radio. I know that the single was dinner with delores which he played on letterman and a few other shows. everyone was turning against Prince at this time, it was at or near the nadir of his career.

I disagree, to some extent, because the nadir of his career was, in my opinion, a bit later....after Emancipation, between 1997 and 1999.

Chaos and Disorder came before Emancipation.

you think so? I think in terms of personal and professional problems, the slave era was a low point. he was the butt of a lot of jokes at that time and i guess the "symbolina" talk and "tafkap" persisted for a while but I think the low point would have been before emancipation.

I remember it being not bad. It's not essential, that's for damn sure. I have the cassette, but haven't listened in quite awhile. It's worth having and listening if you're a fan though. Certainly better than the bulk of Emancipation. I'll have to go back to it but if my recollection is right, it sounds like a lot of rockish outtakes and b-side style tracks from the Gold era. With less treble and overproduction. Dolphin would be right at home on Chaos, for example.

Woe... you consider emancipation expendable? I think disc 1 is pretty bad, but 2 & 3 are great to incredible. ...peeps have their tastes!

That's true. People made jokes about him or just totally lost interest. He couldn't even sell out an arena in England or Holland anymore, countries where he had the strongest fanbase.
Of course there was a personal tragedy in 96, but at least he was not a "slave" anymore and the Jam of the Year tour was a success.

Prince and Madonna had some kind of love/hate relationship or friendship that started in the Purple Rain era and lasted on and off for a very long time. He wrote a letter to her which he published on his Love4oneAnother site and which mentioned a dream in which he had seen her, asking for support etc., and he both dissed her at times and respected her at other times.

One of those mild disses would be his reaction in the "Love 4 One Another" TV special where he shakes his head while watching Madonna´s version of "Love Don´t Live Here Anymore", which had come out at that time.

haha, oh yeah i'd forgotten about that.

God I dunno, I suppose the Madonna theory makes as much sense as any other, the diffuser people go into a fair amount of detail in their review. It's a lovely breezy rock song but I guess i'm iffy about the lyrics in general, not his most eloquent.

the brontosauras statement always made me think that she was a pig, which sounds like madonna, in terms of her being into her animal instincts, sex/power/hunger. a book on P in the 90's also said Prince was intimidated by her oversexed behavior and did not like being around all those gay dancers, whether that's true or not i wouldn't know.

Makes sense...

she seemed a little dense back then, maybe it was her self conscious image promoting (P did the same, but he was "fly") with each subsquent low brow hedonistic thing to come next... especially that book.

Maybe she was a dullard in conversation. I'm sure conversation appealed as much to P.... unless.. like any red blooded dude.... the girl was SUPER hot... then.... boingo..

Never been a Madonna fan. This is an interesting side.

I assumed he meant a kinda disproportioned chick. Delores is definite unconventional maybe she was also unconventional looking. Madonna is not disproportionate and she is white so "dancing like a white girl" basically rules that out. Looking at the lyrics as a poem it looks like a fantasy about a chick who could deep throat while watching porno flicks tbh. Brontosaurus-es or brontosauri or whatev have long throats, Delores is always on her knees with a line of dudes on deck.

Well. ...it's a shame we may never KNOW. i don't think he'd have suffered to let people in on this one.

As far as I can tell the claim that DWD is about Madonna is totally unsubstantial.

It happens regularly and it's a pity: someone on the Org will once come-up with a fantastic statement, based on nothing but their own delusions. It will, however, be picked then repeated by other people, who assumed it was sourced, as being factual until the point that it has been repeated so many times that most people take it for granted that it's true. In 16 years on the Org, I've seen it happen quite a few times and it's really unfortunate.

naw, that's your interpretation, i just thought it was one of those lazy rhyme schemes which prince frequently wrote, i always suppossed, because he was intent on getting a song done. Also, if she was eating, she was packing it in, the song is called 'dinner with delores after all. never was crazy about this single but it isn't that bad, the arrangement was ok with the flutes and so on.

I don't LOVE any of the songs on C&D, although I like "Into the Light" and "I Like It There."

If you like Prince's rock music, you may dig it. Although at the end, it also has a few dance tracks. Not a great album, but it has its moments. I Like It There became a live classic in later years, but other than that, most of the songs here were never heard of again. I know there's folks who don't like it when I call an album a "throwaway" wink but this one... But that doesn't have to be a bad thing. Just out of curiosity, I did a little search on eBay and it can still be found for a reasonable price, in the €15-25 range. [Edited 11/1/17 12:22pm] [Edited 11/1/17 12:23pm]

I was very disappointed at the album when it came out.
I forgot all about it for years.

I think it may be the most slow-burn album he ever released.
I mean it grows on you, it really does.

It just suffers from the period and the conditions under which it was released (pretty pathetic),
and the liner notes ("this songs were intended just for friends", or some like that).

But like most Prince's paranoid works, there's this prerequisite:
you have to adhere to his "me againt the world" vision to fully appreciate it.
And you have to forget all about the eighties, because this is a very different musician.
No Linn, no phaser pedal on the hi-hat, no classic Minnie Sound synth stabs on C&D.

It's the sense of joyous freedom of quitting WB that prevails for me.
Take a look at "The Same December" video, it's pretty eloquent.

Again, the Dawn: if you consider TGE, Come, Exodus, Mayte's album, and the fragments
that landed on "Crystall Ball" (the 4 CD set) and C&D as a one massive record,
you may reconsider it with a fresh point of view.

The Colors R brighter, the Bond is much tighter
No Child's a failure
Until the Blue Sailboat sails him away from his dreams
Don't Ever Lose, Don't Ever Lose
Don't Ever Lose Your Dreams

I saw the video (Dinner With Deloris), which I hadn't before! Looks like NYC is the backdrop?

"Delores" best as I can tell is your generic greedy, awkward gal with feelings of self-entitlement. Prince ditched her at the club after seeing her dance so poorly (and the pigging out, nagging for sex lol 'n whatnot). His gal at the DJ booth had a farewell message left by him to give to Delores, which she did after inviting her over. Pretty sweet and simple. Lucky for him!

It's best to avoid repeating gossip just because it's plausible, or it should systematically be associated with a "personal, unverified theory" warning.

One reason is that plausibility doesn't constitute proof, and the other is that what sounds plausible to someone may not to someone else (but that someone else may nonetheless accept it as fact if presented as such).

IMO, when it comes to rock, NPG is better than 3rd Eye Girl.
