This little blurb in a magazine caught my interest as a young fella searching for a new sound... how did pop star Prince end up on such a list with albums like Kool Keith as Dr. Octagon and Spring Heel Jack? Had to get it. One listen to the album and I understood, joined NPG Music Club, started devouring the previous material and it is now one of my favorite full albums. Sure the raps are sorta unnecessary but the whole album bangs on. Still can listen in full to this day.

It's sequenced so well.

If "Into The Light" does not catch you off-guard at your most emotional...
Just when you thought this was a comedy album.

Just let it unfold in the background.
Or put it to 11, da sound is so-blime.
Prince over-compressed and yet so clean sounds kinda scary.

Again, a menacing album. Apocalypse is all over "The Same December",
which SKipper himself later felt the month deserved a calmer,
less combative interpretation of the Good Book at the end of The Rainbow Children.

Prince's worst album

Even at a "throwaway" album, in my book it is better than any P's 00 releases, barring "The Rainbow Children" and "Art Official Age".

How can you not crack up at the last minute of "The Same December"?
The descending laugh of the girl, the lollipop in his mouth.
"You only know what U know and-errr..."

Hilarious, and a brilliant slap in the face at the same time.
So is "Right the Wrong". The whole album is a trip.

Ow, y'all make me want to spin it right now.

It is a great album and enjoyable on several levels, not least of which it is that it is labeled as a kiss-off to Warner Brothers' contractural obligations--a somewhat random compillation, but of really good music and songs.

The song totally rocks. Maybe not in the way that many rock fans want it to, but still.

The first half is really solid and "Zannalee" is great, plus the brief but spooky "Had U." Some clunkers in the middle. A good album.

come had commercial play? I wouldn't know, i never listened to much radio. I know that the single was dinner with delores which he played on letterman and a few other shows. everyone was turning against Prince at this time, it was at or near the nadir of his career.

I've heard "Dinner With Delores" on the air in recent years--made me laugh! So, yes it must be popular out there somewhere! The only thing that I can remember being played from Come on commercial radio is "Letitgo," which I've always enjoyed. Come to me seems more like a "fans only" item--mainly inward-focused themes. The title track and ending track are HOT. And what commercial oriented station would play a song titled "Race" that doesn't involve a finish line?

Anyway, Chaos & Disorder is chock-full of gems. I don't get the dissing of the album, unless you just really don't like electric guitar, Prince's voice, or some of the subject matter.

I really like it. It has pissed-off rock Prince, melancholy Prince, butt-hurt Prince, and funk/dance Prince. The only thing missing is r&b soul Prince. For some reason, I separated The Truth from Crystal Ball and have Chaos and Disorder and The Truth coupled so that C&D transitions into TT. There is something about how "Had U" flows into "The Truth" that feels right. I'm not saying that it is right just that it feels right.

I got my copy of Skeletons from Amazon because I'm not a member of any streaming service. And, yes, Skeletons is a very good album. I play it and Andre Cymone's 1969 constantly. Oddly, before Skeletons, I couldn't really get into Brownmark's work other than "Bang Bang!" I remember when I first heard Skeletons thinking, "Why the hell didn't he do this all those years ago?" But, I guess we all grow, change, and, hopefully, get better.

Why would Prince write a diss track about Madonna in 1996? And you're accusing her of being crass?

I disagree, to some extent, because the nadir of his career was, in my opinion, a bit later....after Emancipation, between 1997 and 1999.

Chaos and Disorder came before Emancipation.

The raps are really a bit lame but I respect Prince for trying to help and support some local rappers.

Sure, he could have worked with some hot rapper of the moment like Q-Tip or whoever, and yes, he later on tried that, too, but this was about Prince giving some local rappers a shot.

Of course there were better rappers in the Twin Cities back then, but Prince probably wasn´t aware of them. He got in touch with these two guys because of a mutual friend they had.

I have friends who used to be friends with Scrap D and Steppa Ranks, and I ´ve personally met Scrap and Steppa and talked about their contributions to Prince´s songs and that I didn´t really like their raps that much but the conversations with them taught me to look at it from their perspective, and from Prince´s perspective.

Prince also supported the Minneapolis HipHop scene at times, at least financially, but unfortunately these two individuals (or DVS or Tony M or TC Ellis) were the ones who ended up on his albums, not some local MCs who were probably more talented.

But....at least they were locals and they got a chance to be part of a Prince album.

-

I like Chaos and Disorder, and while it may not be the most popular or successful album, we should keep in mind that Prince liked most of these songs even though the album itself was more or less a contractual obligation.

If he didn´t like the songs he wouldn´t have made videos for Zannalee, Same December and Dinner with Dolores, and he would not have performed C&D or I Rock, Therefore I am so often.

And he also used Into The Light and I Will after 9/11 for his NPG Ahdio Show.

It´s a weird little mix of songs on a weird album but most of those songs must´ve meant something to him at some point.

Thanks for posting it.

This really cheered me up. Sun, sweat, cold drinks, TDK cassettes, summertime and Madonna wearing a transparent bra.

Just wonderful.

Prince and Madonna had some kind of love/hate relationship or friendship that started in the Purple Rain era and lasted on and off for a very long time. He wrote a letter to her which he published on his Love4oneAnother site and which mentioned a dream in which he had seen her, asking for support etc., and he both dissed her at times and respected her at other times.

One of those mild disses would be his reaction in the "Love 4 One Another" TV special where he shakes his head while watching Madonna´s version of "Love Don´t Live Here Anymore", which had come out at that time.

edit: Not actually sure if he indeed wrote and sent that letter, but he published it on L4OA.

So the NPG trio could play an on album this way, and also TGE, and Exodus.
The Dawn would have been an intoxicating 5 CD set.

If you put it in context, it's part of a masterpiece you have to make from
picking in all the flood of official tracks and unreleased gems of that era.

I love C&D. The title song was supposed to be on the same album as "Gold", and "Days Of Wild".
That's important stuff.

"Dinner" is perfection. "Into The Light/I Will" is the best dyptic he ever made.
Is it a serious album? Or just a throwaway? I've grown to tolerate "NPG Too Da Maximom",
just because yes, I wanna sing along "I Rock, Therefore I Am".

Like all biographic Prince, you have to let it in,
otherwise it may sound pointless.
But think about what he already has behind at this point of this career.
I love the rage of theses opening chords, "check! check!", it's hilarious,
it's like a Let's Go Crazy nod gone totally wrong.
And it's bleak at the same time.

Chaos and Disorder is his Black Album of the nineties,
in the terms of WTF attitude. "Anything goes, I'm the baddest".
All the songs are fantastic, even if for the first minutes
you feel like he's oversimplfying fifties rock ("Delirious", "Temptation", and even country, Prince at his most minnesotan).
But by the third verse, it's overdubs' orgy, on all songs.
By the end of it you go "what a good composition", even if you don't like it yet.
They play fiercely, Prince is incredible on the axe, nothing in common with his eighties style,
a totally different guitar player, with his own bizarro electro squeeshy octaves, that have become trademark effects.
I would say Prince is closer to Jerry Lee Lewis when it comes to rock. He bops.
It's all about instinctive yet controlled destruction, a scary precision amidst the apparrent carelessness.
Fucking same suite of chords we all know by heart, rock'n'roll again and again and again,
the NPG pwer trio sounding like some blacksmiths from Funk'n'Roll Hell forging shiny, chromy, dry beats.

Fantastic headphone experience.
Never mind the loudness wars, this one is justified.
You may have touch your EQ to your likings.

Brilliant! Thank you for this.

haha, oh yeah i'd forgotten about that.

God I dunno, I suppose the Madonna theory makes as much sense as any other, the diffuser people go into a fair amount of detail in their review. It's a lovely breezy rock song but I guess i'm iffy about the lyrics in general, not his most eloquent.
