With New Power Soul, Prince’s brother is bringing Paisley Park’s studios back to life

.

After sunset on a Tuesday evening, purple lights shine on the white tiles that line Paisley Park and there are only a few cars left in the rear parking lot. The building’s public tours have shut down for the day, and the merch booths and cash registers are shrouded in purple fabric, all the lights turned down low.

.

But just down the hallway from the soundstage, tucked behind an insulated glass door, a familiar scene is playing out for the first time in far too long: The sound booth of Studio B is lined with musicians in wheeled office chairs who are bobbing their heads to a song they just finished recording in the early hours of that morning. The funky opening beat of “If I Was Your Girlfriend” is weaving through the air overhead, and Prince’s brother, Omarr Baker, is smiling like he’s trying to keep a killer secret, restraining himself from getting up to dance.

.

It’s taken a long time for Omarr to get here. Since Prince passed away, he’s been championing the idea of using Paisley Park’s state-of-the-art studios to record new music, something he says Prince explicitly wanted. Paisley Park opened for tours in October 2016, but it wasn’t until this summer that surviving members of Prince’s family began using Studio B again...

I will give the music a try and I like the idea of music coming out of Paisley Park but I don't like the big balls. Go to a doctor and get an exam that could be a serious condition. I would like it if they used Paisley for established artists and maybe chose new artists from a battle of bands.

Adrian is a male.

He played in the last NPG band.

And I think he was hanging around at PP until the end.

So they are not going to be NPG:New Power Generation but NPS New Power Soul?

Why cant people do the music from the time periods they were connected to the Prince scene instead of always doing the 1980s music?

.

Ok Josh Dunham(bass) from the Planet Earth NPG

Marcus Anderson sax(HornHeadz)

Gail Johnson (no direct affiliation to the NPG) performed with Morris Day's band a long time ago in the 80s))

Vanessa Domonique ((drummer from Europe) no direct affiliation to the NPG))

Adrian Crutchfield and Marcus Anderson were part of the NPG Hornz from 2012-2015. Bass player Josh Dunham (and his drummer wife Cora) were with Prince during the 3121/Planet Earth era.

Yes the last music Prince was working on included Adrian (along with Kirk J., Donna Grantis and MonoNeon).

Marcus was in the last incarnation of the NPG Horns, but never in the Hornheadz.

This is so tacky. I actually like Jason Tenner as an impersonator. Saw his tribute show several times and he's been doing it for over 20 years. P never shut his show down and we all know he could have. But let's get real, there's a big difference between a tribute and actually trying to replace/replicate someone and to me, this venture of Omarr's is feeling very much like an ATTEMPT at the latter. Also feels like a feeble attempt at a money grab with the assumption that Prince fans will just buy anything affilated with Prince and that is just not true. This ultimately will not be successful. What did Omarr do for a living before his half-brother died?

Have U had your + today?
