I think WB was right on this one

In the Q&A with Sharon there was this:

Guitarhero:

Q: What's your opinion on some of the bonus tracks on PR deluxe I.E. We Can F@@K knowing Prince in later life was against profanities. I personally am happy to hear everything from each era.

A: That’s WB for you.

Her answer is not direct but it seems like she is in agreement that WB should honor Prince's desire for censorship.

I think WB made the right call in releasing the Mother of all the We Can Funk daughters. So amazing to hear the original. I love all versions of this song. clapping

WB please do not listen to calls for censorship!

I agree.I think WB and the estate should release all the great songs we haven't heard yet.Even if they are nasty or vulgar.

I think that the fans should have access to any song that Prince recorded while under contract with WB if it's in WB 'vault,' whether or not it contains profanity, but only up to the point when Prince decided to stop using the profanity in his songs. Otherwise, it's like taking all of the profanity out of something like a book that was published years ago and republishing a new edition with no profanity. It's not the artist's vision at the time of creation, is it? Those words were put in there for a reason, otherwise they wouldn't have been there in the first place.

agree. I want to hear every song/version the way it was intended at the time he created/recorded it ... whoever might be in charge for releasing it. and I'm sure that's what prince wanted too ... otherwise he would have deleted it (which he actually did with tunes he didn't want us to hear ... see wally 1). he didn't do anything without a reason and it's part of his history, his growing, his career, his legacy ... like all his dancing, piano humping, guitar licking etc. in his earlier life performances ... or should those parts be blackened in future releases too just bc he wouldn't have done the same 2017 too? and good gawd ... don't even want to imagine we'd missed out the original we can fuck ...

btw I don't think that's what sharon actually meant ... she said the contrary in other answers.

Yeah, her answer could be taken as an abdication on taking a position.

They don't, not over the WB stuff. Remember Prince left no will.

Disagree. If WCF had been on Purple Rain and it was left off or curse words edited out I could understand but that’s not the case here. If it’s a previously unreleased song (bootlegs don’t count) then not releasing it isn’t rewriting history. When Prince stopped using profanity he also stopped performing any songs that contained profanity. My position is if WB decides to remaster other albums leave them as is but when it comes to previously unreleased music then release stuff that doesn’t contain profanity.

I'm afraid this would leave his entire catalogue of unreleased music from 1979 to 2003 in the vault and unheard forever. I really hope they won't do that.

Why stop there? Why not censor anything that implies anything "dirty".

How about they release everything they can and you don't listen to the songs you don't want to hear?

There are plenty of songs on Ps last three albums that could be considered "dirty."

Maybe the family should censor those songs also. eyepop

Because we know Prince’s feelings on curse words (whether you agree with them or not). As far as music that doesn’t contain curse words but is “dirty” I guess judgement calls will have to be made. But I’m talking about really dirty stuff not just innuendo. No matter what is released judgements will need to be made as to weather it’s good enough to put out. Unless they decide to put everything out which I think would be a mistake. There’s no way everything in the vault is great or even good. Someone is going to have to curate it.

We agree to disagree then. Prince stopped using profanity-laden songs but that didn't stop people from going out and buying the 1999 album and hear him say 'I sincerely wanna f*ck the taste out of your mouth', did it? Prince didn't tell WB to stop selling those albums from his past, did he? Those songs were all recorded and played on radio long before he gettisoned his use of profanity and yet they were still available to the fans for purchase. Not releasing the songs with profanity isn't rewriting history, but it is EDITING history. I don't want someone (WB executive or family member) deciding what version of a song we get to hear that Prince recorded at a time when he thought it was okay for him to record it as is. No one should edit or alter the musical history of Prince.

I believe in a different question that was posed to Sharon, she said Prince was OK (didn't regret) with his past works, he just didn't want to PERFORM them. If she believes that, then she probably isn't too broken up about WB including songs with graphic material.

Why is reading comprehension so difficult? Curse words and dirty (in a sexual nature) are two different things. Prince didn’t take the sex out of his music but he did stop cursing and making music or performing music that contained curse words. This isn’t an argument about if he was being consistent or if it was hypocritical of him to remove cursing but not sex. My feeling is put the vault music with profanity off to the side and release other stuff first. Then see where we’re at.

How is not releasing something editing it? What if Prince left instructions that said don’t release anything from the vault EVER. Would that be editing history? Just because music is in the vault doesn’t mean the public has a right to hear it.

I agree with you guys. I wish I could know what his opinion would be on this in truth. He chose to stop making more music like that but he never prevented sale of past albums with profanity, obviously. And his later music is not without euphemism for sex lol

It is one thing to argue that only quality music be released and another to say even if the quality is the best Prince ever recorded, don't release it if it has a curse word.

Haha it’s not my morals. Prince was the one who chose to stop swearing and stop performing music with profanity. He was the one who had a swear jar at his house. He was the one who made that differentiation.

Your issue is with him not me. I kind of have a feeling that’s why he told The a View in 2013 that someone else would be releasing stuff from the vault. Then he wouldn’t have to deal with that issue. Btw, I know I’m in the minority and most die hard fans want to hear it all. And if WB gets to decide then based on the PR release they’ll have no problem releasing music with profanity. So I guess fans that want this should hope WB gets to decide. wink

Thank you! Looks like you and I are in the minority on this topic? I get that people want to respect Prince's wishes that the songs with profanity not be released, but as it was stated earlier when he was on the View that someone else would be releasing the songs in the vault and he wouldn't be around to be upset about it. He didn't say he never wanted those songs to be released, just that he wouldn't be here to take the heat, so to speak. The songs should not be edited for content- they should be released as they are.

P knew The Vault would eventually be released as he talked about it in a few interviews.

I think he even told Kurt you would find a more erotic Prince in The Vault.

He didnt have a will.

He didnt delete his music.

He wanted The Vault material to be heard, enjoyed, and treasured.

Amen.

Exactly. Agree 100% with all of this.

And I am still agreeing with you nod He could have taken care of this "problem" in a couple of different ways if it was a concern to him. It obviously was not, but others choose to ignore that.

Welcome to "the org", Mumio…they can have you, but I'll have your love in the end nod

Why is reading comprehension so difficult? Curse words and dirty (in a sexual nature) are two different things. Prince didn’t take the sex out of his music but he did stop cursing

.

Oh please, dude used plenty of those "replacement" curse words. As if saying "heck" isn't the same intent as using "hell". Typical religious hypocrisy.

.

I fail to see why we should respect the opinions of Prince circa 2008 WRT material he recorded in 1984.
