I disagree. I think that Prince's total lack of a posthumous release plan says everything that needs to be said.

.

What I'm interested in is where this "release everything" mentality comes from. Why would any fan who respects the artistry of Prince be of the mindset that the marketplace should be flooded with every stray musical scrap he ever committed to tape?

.

He released what he wanted to release. The choice to NOT release something implies "not intended for public consumption."

.

Does nothing remain private after a person dies? I believe it should.

[Edited 8/29/17 5:20am]

It does say everything. It says he didn't give a shit. What did he think would happen if he left no directive?

BTW I am not one who wants every scrap released, however on the cursing hell yes, let all of it come out. For those who don't like it, don't buy it.

.

No. It says he wasn't prepared for premature death. Not the same as not giving a shit.

I’ve been informed that my opinion is worth less than those expressed by others here.

It is also near impossible to create the amout of work he created while maintaining a ridiculous high quality throughout so many songs. And he said himself, the best stuff is still in the vault. I say release it all and let the fans be the ultimate judge.

The profanity thing, well, even Prince understood that is who he was at that time, the rest of the world is smart enough to understand that too, so, yes, even songs with swears should be released. Releasing a song from the 80's or 90's with swears in it does not change who he became later in life, it only brings focus to how he transcended his former self to become what he though to be the best version of himself. The full gamet of who he was, along the entire journey of his life is the proper way to do it.

How would you know? That's the line we've been fed all these years. So far, based on what has surfaced officially and unofficially, that claim has proven hyperbolic.

.

From what I have heard from the vault, I am of the opinion that he is correct, but like all music, everyones idea of what is good or bad is different.

Just so I understand your piont of view: you personally believe that the best music you have heard of Prince's are the songs that have leaked from the Vault? As opposed to the music that he chose to place on official albums?

No, I am saying the quality of the unreleased stuff, to me, is on par with the released stuff. Hope this clarifies my point of view.

Okay, so 'just as good' -- you originally said "the best" is in the Vault.

.

I find it staggering beyond belief that anyone would express either opinion. But as you say, it's all subjective. There's no accounting for the taste of some people, that's for damn sure.

No, I mentioned Prince said his best work was still in the vault, then pointed out the consistency of his released music and speculated that the remaining vault material is most likely on par. We will see right? (hopefully)

No, you didn't - but you've corrected yourself here. Fine.

Yes ... what he worked on that did not make the record but leaked to us is far different than a song he loved but wanted to save for something special ... i still like to believe he had some "best album of all time" nugget he was sitting on for the right moment ... at the same time .. he may just be a work horse who throws everything at the wall till something sticks and has no real sense of what made some songs better than others

I'm sorry you are a legend heading towards your 60s and you don't have a will? He was clearly in decline. I am sure Rhianna and Adele have wills or some sort of directive.

I, myself, find it hard to fathom that Prince had no will. He knew he was worth millions and that his music would continue to sell after he was gone (more so in fact, as he witnessed what happens when an Artist dies: sales skyrocket for a while). I was hoping that he had a will that stated that everything in the vault was to be given away to his 'fam'. I still don't get why he didn't have a will and a small part of me is suspicious that there actually might be one but it was hidden away. Just my thoughts...

Speaking of wills, I still want to know what him and Will Smith talked about on that phone call a few hours before he passed away.

A solicitor somewhere would have known if there was a current will.

I think this is a very good description. I think if you keep plugging away at anything you become better at it. You can't just wait for the classic songs to come out from nowhere. He kept working at it every day.
