An instrumental version of the 84 recording is circulating.

Is that what's used in the movie?

Huh, intriuging, for some reason I had long thought that the instrumental version was similar to the 1983 "warehouse" rendition, but listening back it's clearly just an instrumental of the released version. Possibly that's why I really liked the released version (morseso than the 83 one) and found it quite interesting and innovative, as I wasn't aware (or had forgotten) that it was identical musically to a version we had previously.

Good question. I think it's just the released version without vocals as you say, can't hear anything additional in the mix and if there is it's subtle enough that it's not easy to pick up on. Still a pretty cool listen though actually, as I alluded to I really enjoy the weird, slightly spooky arrangement of this version of Possessed so it's quite nice to be able to focus on listening to it without the 'distraction' of the vocals.

Oh yeah for sure, it's clearly unfinished so to speak, and it's not something I'd return to regularly, but it's a cool curiosity for sure. I really like the warehouse version as well but I feel like the 84 version had Prince going out of his electro-funk comfort zone a little bit and producing something a bit more avant-garde and sinister and I perhaps dig it more because of that.

I just watched the scene from the movie and it's definitely the instrumental of the 1984 version that's playing.

I like both versions but I love the 80s oberheim synths sounds so I prefer the Warehouse version.

I actually bought a synthesizer in 86 after seeing the Purple Rain tour and tried and tried to get the FAT sound but i dind't realize then it was the analog Oberheim sound that you cant' really get from a digital synth (mine was an Ensoniq ESQ1)
