As a 'youngin', you need to spread the word about the wealth of Prince material/songs/videos to all the other youngins out there!!!

Trust me I've been trying at the time of his death most of my friends and girlfriend only knew him as that 80's singer, the Purple Rain guy, or the "girly guy with the high pitched voice". Which is a damn shame but also in a way P's fault for restricting YouTube/Spotify access to his music and videos. Despite everything, no one can dictate who you are to other people - 1958-2016

Controversy. 'Liberate My Mind'

Very hard to answer that question. I had heard and liked Prince radio hits like 1999, Little Red Corvette, Raspberry Beret, Kiss and what not.
But I didn't really listen to Prince until 2007 at 13. The Superbowl was the big bang, then I secretly DVR'd Purple Rain and watched it when my Parents were off at work.
My older brother had recently won a 32gb iPod Photo (Remember those?) and let me listen to the full album while we raked leaves in the backyard. Spellbound is the best word to descibe the experience.
So, while Let's Go Crazy would be a good answer, Mountains would be just as fitting.
I had a shift in consciousness/expansion of the emotional spectrum listening to Parade about a year later in 2008. I fell hard for the music, and spectating about on this site. [Edited 7/22/17 8:53am]

Controversy. Saw him on some music show, I cannot recall the one. The trench coat, those underwear, that gorgeous face, that great song. Kind of formed my opinion of sexiness too. Damn that was a lot of years ago, and I was so young.

I got into his music because of Kiss: his voice and the video were awesome and I was just a kid back then, but Controversy made me fall in love.

When Doves Cry. I was a Senior in High School. My older sister had 1999 and I listened to it AFTER I fell in love with this song and then with Prince. I bought the single first, then Purple Rain, Around the World in A Day, Dirty Mind (on cassette) and Controversy. And on and on.....

Condition of the Heart. I listened over and over again, intrigued, but not quite putting my finger on why, and then I thought, "Oh my god, it's a choir of Princes." And that was it, I fell in. And the MUSIC continues...forever...

D.M.S.R. ... the first time I heard that opening 10 seconds shoot through my headphones, I was hooked. I remember that "holy shit" moment in my mind and I've been hooked to his work ever since.

Darling Nikki. Mostly because I was a newly 13 y/o boy and Purple Rain was my very first Prince record.

One? not possible .... . 1999. The song was beyond cool to my pre teen ears. And I wanted that coat. . When Doves Cry. Unique, somehow sparse but so provocative. . Computer Blue. Mysterious and beautiful. . Mountains. So uplifting, never tired of it. . Sign of the Times. It was the the truth, delivered with chilling, insightful simplicity. . Diamonds and Pearls. Still one of the most comforting songs I've ever heard. .

When I was a kid my favorite Prince song was When Doves Cry(especially its lyrics and emotional content) , followed by 1999 *especially when I figured out what the chorus was implying. I remember thinking it was surprisingly deep for a dance song..LOL.
As an adult, when I really become obsessed, I guess it would be Darling Nikki followed by Question of U.

"Little Red Corvette." I heard it and thought it was the most fun, exciting and unique song I had ever heard. No song has blown my mind as much since.

it wasnt just one song...it was a steady progression that built over the first few years of his career....when i first heard "Soft & Wet", i thought it was corny and juvenile and unimpressive musically...then a year later, "I Wanna Be Your Lover" is my high school girlfriend's favorite song...im starting to see Prince on TV and magazines and immediately im thinking that dude is too weirdly effeminate for me to listen any further...but at the same time, i secretly thought "Sexy Dancer" and "Its Gonna Be Lonely" was some hot shit...other than "Party Up" and "Private Joy" and "Annie Christian", i didnt get Dirty Mind or Controversy (at FIRST)...i was a full fledged hiphop head by then, and had no time for Prince's sexually ambiguous lyrics and antics...but THEN, "1999" came out, and i couldnt fight it no more...to this day, the drum programming, synth lines, and the pictures he painted on that song, put me in a trancelike state...i bought my first Prince lp..."Something In The Water" was my personal anthem and theme music...not just the amazing rhythm arrangement, but almost word for word, the song described a relationship i was in at the time...that was the year Prince joined Earth Wind & Fire, as my favorite musical act of all time...so maybe answer is "1999"/"Something In The Water"...after that, i went back and bought all his lps i didnt have, and continued to enjoy and study his entire catalog to this day

LITTLE RED CORVETTE was his first song that got any serious airplay on the Salt Lake City stations.
. That's all it took. that first line about parking your car sideways. After that, we started hearing bits from his back catalog. . I'd heard CONTROVERSY prior but without context, it didn't settle in immediately. . [Edited 8/5/17 11:15am] Welcome to "the org", laytonian… come bathe with me.

Little Red Corvette. But as great as the song is, it was really the video that did it. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

I already really liked 1999 back in 1982 when I was 10 and heard it on the radio, but I didn't know who Prince was or what he looked like. But when I heard WDC for the first time in 1984 I immediately was very excited about this brand new record and went on to buy the single. A lifelong Prince fan was born! RIP Prince: thank U 4 a funky Time...

Lady Cab Driver
When I was 16, I bought "1999" on CD without knowing anything about Prince's music. I was hooked from the beginning of the album, but "Lady Cab Driver" was the track that really drove it home for me (yes, pun intended). I blushed about 16 times listening to it on my CD Walkman on my way home from the wrecka stow, but didn't want the music to end.

LET'S GO CRAZY... First one I was even aware of, sparked the lifelong fire... . Misspoken by Mallory on 'Family Ties' as 'Let's Get Crazy' - I remember thinking even at 10 years old, 'Who wrote this episode that they couldn't get that right??' I’ve been informed that my opinion is worth less than those expressed by others here.
