Prince's Vocal Guide Tracks Are ALWAYS Better It's dawned on me that as these newest leaks are coming out how amazingly better Prince's vocal guide tracks are to what officially came out by associated/protege artists.
He had such a rich, expressive, effortless pop voice. Strong on both the top end and bottom, amazing control, always on pitch, clear - always interesting sounding.
My son asked me this weekend, "Dad, who has the best voice in music?" *He's 14*
I thought about it and said, "I have to say Prince...but sort of in the same stratosphere I'd have to add Freddie Mercury and Rod Stewart...and maybe George Michael..."
Man I miss him. | |

Prince also has good vocal phrasing. This might be my favorite thing about him. He is an expressive and even naturalistic singer with a humorous and sexy flair for the dramatic. I noticed that often the original writers of songs have a more natural and believable take on their own songs. I was into american standards for a while (and listened to a lot of Billie Holiday, Sinatra, and Ella). I noticed that some of the original writers of these standards were suprisingly effective singers. (not Cole Porter, he was a boring singer and I am not sure what Gershwin sounded like.) Johnny Mercer (accentuate the positive, Blues in the night,) and Hoagie Carmichael (Stardust, Hong Kong Blues, Georgia on my mind, Heart and soul) were charismatic vocalists and sometimes I prefer their versions of their own songs better than the so-called expert singers takes on them.
But you kind of lost me on Rod Stewart. LOL.

Rod Stewart is a GREAT singer. Check out on Youtube the Face's cover of McCartney's Maybe I'm Amazed.

. Prince had an amazing voice, so did Freddie Mercury. One of my all-time favs as far as male vocalists go would have to be Steve Perry (Journey). There is a long list, but Steve is definitely in the top 10. I've always loved Prince's voice; so unique and strong.

Yeah but no. Except that great live version of Our Destiny and maybe on The Dance Electric where I don't think either version is better I pretty much always prefer the protege singing. I think Prince knew what he was doing when he gave songs away. | |
