There goes this thread. This was meant to be a discussion, not dumping lists on everyone's heads. Seems quite a few people have an issue with Diamonds and Pearls. I can relate to that. Another one for me is When Doves Cry. I think because it's the same melody all the way through the song that I get bored. I am see it's a revolutionary sound, I.e. No bass etc but the songs lacks such a degree of warmth that I do skip it. Blasphemy I know [Edited 5/8/17 0:18am] [Edited 5/8/17 0:22am]
You choose to respond to my list but not my discussion about the tracks I don't particularly like? What's up with that? There appeared to be some confusion about what qualifies as classic, so I thought I would come up with some criteria by which to define it.

I appologise for offending you, but it seemed like you were doing the opposite of what my conversation started as: pick 1 classic song and discuss, instead writing a massive list with no conversation, just scores out of 10.

You only mentioned one classic song underneath that, Nothing Compares 2 U, which like D&P also seems like people have a problem with and understandably so. Prince's version of Nothing Compares 2 U never really feels that definitive, because he hasn't really released a definivitve version just a live version with Rosie 'OTT' Gaines. Unfortunately Sinead 'O' Connor's version probably does seem like the definiitve version as she seemed to drag more emotion . The Family's isn't great either, because the singing is awful, but if it had P's vocals on it, maybe it might be different. Prince clearly didn't know what this song could be, until Sinead did her cover. Like Dylan with 'All along the Watchtower'.

But Diamonds

Cream Kiss Delerious On The Couch Extraordinary Damn U How Come U Dont Call Me (I dislike it live. Love the studio version)

How are On The Couch, Extraordinary and Damn U classic songs???

How Come U Dont Call Me: if you love the studio version, then why did you write this?

I give up.

Not that i dislike them, they're great, but i cant remember how long it's ago i started playing them intentionally (at very least 15 years)
But the extended LGC is still mega good.

Diamonds And Pearls. Never liked it.

Several I do like but have heard enough for one lifetime: When Doves Cry, Purple Rain, Raspberry Beret, Take Me With U...

I used to find Diamonds & Pearls and Cream both quite boring. At the time it was just too big of a change for me going from the Lovesexy / Batman vibes (experimental, darker) to the ultra homogenized R&B pop of the Diamonds & Pearls album.

But in more recent years I've started appreciating more the production quality of these tracks & found things there that I really like.

And now that I'm a little older, I dig quite a lot the message of Diamonds & Pearls. Teenage me didn't want that sentimental stuff, but 45-year old me is just fine with it.

If I gave you diamonds and pearls
Would you be a happy boy or a girl
If I could I would give you the world
But all I can do is just offer you my love

Preach, brother P!

As far as classics I still don't really dig..

I respect Purple Rain, but it's not a track I'm going to seek out & listen to very often.

Hello, this is my first message at prince.org, I haven't found the place to introduce myself, so pardon me for not doing so

My choice is Joint 2 Joint. You can find a lot of spanish fans who LOVE this song, but I just hate it. It makes me cringe when I haven't skipped the song and a friend listens to it. Is this really a song or just a "musical" joke?

Delirious. It is okay by I can thing of hundreds of Prince songs I prefer. It is better live, especially the performance at the first aveneue benefit show.

There are some I am not as responsive to anymore, but that is probably due to just over-hearing them and possibly a bit to aging (Oh no!)

I'll add my name to the Delirious list.

Out of all the classic songs, I've not skipped any song more than Delirious.

I don't really know what it is... it kind of has an "Elvis" vibe to me that I don't care for. Having said that, however, I know all the words to the song as if I wrote it myself. lol lol
