The thread is titled "classic Prince songs you don't really dig".

The thread is about the popular songs (or the fan favourites) that the orgers responding to the thread can't personally connect with.

So what

[Edited 5/10/17 3:51am]

Your observation that people are selecting popular Prince songs that they dislike may have something to do with the title of this thread.

I agree, this one of his biggest hits, quite possible one of his top 3 signature songs, but It's far from being one of his best.

My observation is that people are selecting songs that were actually popular makes me think they have a problem with anything he did that had an appeal with the masses not so much because the songs in of themselves were bad.

It just sounds too "pop" and too corny/silly to me.

I was working part time at a five and dime,my boss was Mr.McGee

really?? lol

2 me that song is anything but pop lol

those lyrics remind me more of a folk or country song or even some 80s rap, than a pop song

But once you really take in the instrumentation, it is just a classic song

Really? Batdance has the best guitar solo recorded by Prince in studio.

The Most Beautiful Girl...2 funking corny.

Musicology...I don't know how classic this song is, though.

That is all!

I don't really like Anna Stesia. Just sort of prodding and inert.
I always skip it.

I'll add my name to the Delirious list.

Out of all the classic songs, I've not skipped any song more than Delirious.

I don't really know what it is... it kind of has an "Elvis" vibe to me that I don't care for. Having said that, however, I know all the words to the song as if I wrote it myself. lol lol

It's rockabilly, Jack U Off is too. I hate that shit.

Agree, as Prince said in DMSR "I say everybody (everybody) screw the masses."

Although I would say that songs like Purple Rain and Kiss, never made me hate them for being popular (and seemingly at times the only songs Prince ever made) but they did create a fatigue where I didn't have to hear them in a hurry.

look at the first singles from the 3 previous albums:

"Controversy" (1981)

"1999" (1982)

"When Doves Cry" (1984)

To me,these three songs are bold, edgy and badass smile By comparison,"Raspberry Beret" is too fluffy, too light and pop.It lacks the badass quality of the previous singles, imo

There was a TV show at the time (can't recall which one it was),but in one episode,a man sits at a piano and asks if anyone has any requests. An old, grandmother type says "Do you know Raspberry Beret"? lol If grandmothers are diggin' a song,it ain't bold and edgy, lol

The thread is about "popular" songs that a fan may not like. It's not much more complicated than that wink Nobody has a problem with Prince having big hit singles.

it's not the problem, that many people like the song. But the negative effect of that is....they seem to only pick this and 2 other songs each and every time.

It's one of the signature songs, and it was/is great indeed. But as robertgeorge said, they created a fatigue. Out of these 3 songs (including kiss and purple rain), i got bored with WDC the soonest.

now here is where the masses are to blame....they don't seem to want to hear anything else...

...and there are so many gems to choose from.....

This. A lot of times, you mention you like Prince, and here they go with the same damn three songs over and over. If they weren't your favorite to begin with, having 20 people croak them at you gets old and annoying fast. I can't tell you how many eye rollingly annoying people sange these exact songs at me in the year he died. And people wonder why I refused to buy anything that had Prince name or pic on it. I didn't want to be sung at. lol (Although goodness knows we had some fun with the shade memes at the office when our computer system kept crashing. We'd just tape a meme to a monitor and the manager knew. lol)

Don't know what defines "classic"... but here goes

The Most Beautiful Girl in The World

Delirious (puts me in the mind of some karaoke Elvis)

Cream (as someone else mentioned, I liked the acoustic version)

Kiss (don't really know why, just never liked it)

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE: Ds&Ps, Adore, Thieves in the Temple, If I were your girlfriend, ...don't know what's wrong with you people smile

It was one of his number 1 hits, in the USA and in other parts of the world. Certainly, can be considered one of his significant singles for that reason alone. The thread title is fine, but if you replace classic with popular or fan favorite, I think it lets you know what we can mention. Of course, there are some close calls (if in doubt discuss I say). For example, on this thread, I could see Anna Stesia being discussed over Glam Slam, despite GS being a single that had a video made for it. I would say batdance is his hit single that most often gets called dreadful or "not a song" (very narrow definition of music). I like Batdance and appreciate it more than when it came out - "stop the press"

In the UK we call this 'Care in the Community' for people that years ago would be be locked in an Asylum, but now are free to occasionally murder people and seemingly now Prince's legacy too. Hooray for progress and this thread!

I think even in jest, people may be missing the Marrk in this thread. First of all Prince's legacy is robust enough for any criticism, and we all know he was criticized for many years without people even having the courtesy of listening to his music.

Secondly, I think it is refreshing to hear what songs people dislike, even if they are the handful of songs that the non-fan always brings up as being Prince's "only good songs." While I personally cannot understand people not liking "I wanna be your lover" for example, I don't believe that differences of opinion no matter how abhorrent to our sensibilities are grounds for certification.

In defense of all those calling out the hits, I have to agree that I am pretty numbed by many of them now because it is all that ever gets played these days. DJ's only seem to have a handful of hits and they all have the same ones. Doesn't make them shit songs, I just don't respond to them like I used to.

Not neccesarily hits but fan favourites:

I Would Die 4 U - Never got into it. The only blemish on PR.

Something in the Water... that everyone else seemed to be drinking that I missed out on.

Gold - Way too much glitter sprinkled over the top of it.

The Gold Standard - Nope. The plastic Standard more like.
