There was something on our local news (mpls) tonight about a bust that yielded heroin and fentanyl and they believe dealers are ordering it online from China. I was only half listening but I think I also heard there were another five deaths recently in the twin cities area due to fentanyl overdoses. Last week there was a bust in a nearby city that yielded fentanyl and heroin as well. Authorities say no matter how much they preach about the danger of fentanyl it doesn't detract users. They want it and the dealers are giving them what they want.

I think it was within a month of P's passing that his former club manager died of the same thing.

This issue -- fentanyl-laced counterfeit opioids -- is one that the DEA labeled a "global threat" in a report it released last summer:
http://content.govdeliver...report.pdf

--

The report starts by saying: "Hundreds of thousands of counterfeit prescription pills, some containing deadly amounts of fentanyl, have been introduced into U.S. drug markets, exacerbating the fentanyl and opioid crisis. The sudden arrival of wholesale amounts of counterfeit prescription drugs containing fentanyls will result in an increase in overdoses, deaths, and opiate-dependent individuals."

-

As far as Minnesota, in December, a "local drug expert" said the fentanyl crisis is a "game changer": http://kstp.com/medical/f...e/4348904/

This article says that "In Minnesota, the state Department of Health said 36 Minnesotans died because of fentanyl in 2015, up from 29 deaths in 2014 and 19 in 2013." They have yet released 2016 fentanyl-specific data, but the opioid epidemic is hitting minnesota hard, like it's hitting the whole country:

-

Opioid dependency and OD deaths are a true crisis in the US right now, killimg more Americans than AIDS did at its peak.

Thanks. We know with certainty that Prince died of an accidental self-administered fentanyl overdose, and reports have alleged that fentanyl-laced counterfeit prescription opioids were found at Paisley; those might have been how he ingested the fentanyl. The thing is, neither of these situations -- fentanyl OD generally or fentanyl-laced counterfeit pills specifically -- are at all unique to Prince's death. They're part of a huge, identified, and truly tragic epidemic.

I try to stay away from the drug thing and speculation but how much of this crisis with fentanyl is from those with chronic pain or other illness vs. people substituting it for heroin? If someone has chronic neck or back pain would their doctor be prescribing them fentanyl?

I tend to be skeptical of most of the rumors around Prince's death but it is believable to me that he didn't know he was taking fentanyl and perhaps that's one reason it was classified as an accidental overdoes.

I know his cousin Charles has started promoting the hashtag JusticeForPrince and from his Facebook page is upset about recent lies. The family has also brought in a attorney who specializes in wrongful death suits so we shall see. The additional drugs in Paisley Park may not mean anything if they did not find them in his system we just do not have the full report so we will never know if he was taking OxyContin which I find hard to believe since it had been known to put people on cloud nine as it is given to terminal patients.

Could the "recent lies" the cousin refers to, be the constant slanderous lies thrown around by all the Prince-was-my-best-friend-because-I-bought-all-his-albums fantasists on this very site and on facebook?

No, I dont agree everyone that works at PP are suspects.

I agree that the investigation file will remain open as an active investigation.

Why do you think the case will be kept open forever? What would be the purpose of that?

Police departments want to close cases not keep them open and the Carver County Sheriff already said they only had one person working the case. It is obviously not a priority so why keep it open?

Because if Prince's death is indeed being treated as a "murder" case, then like in most U.S. states, there is no statute of limitation on "murder" in MN.

question, did the 30th anniversary edition of Purple Rain get released in the summer of 2014 as planned???

I asked Prince what he was planning to do. He told me , I'm going to look for the ladder. I asked him what that meant. All he said was, sometimes it snows in April. - book D.M.S.R.

I have no factual knowledge of this, but it seems plausible that whatever investigation of Prince's death is happening is part of the broader law-enforcement efforts around the opioid epidemic. Prince was one of hundreds of people in Minnesota to die of opioid overdose last year (many from illegally acquired opioids), and one of 50k+ in the nation. It's possble law enforcement aren't tunnel-visioned on any one of these cases, but are focusing resources on the bigger picture. I mean, if Prince did use illegal/counterfeit pills, surely whoever supplied him (and i mean up the whole distro chain) supplied many other people too.

--I get an e-mail from the Star Tribune and I have yet to hear if a rash of people dying in the Minn area from mislabled pills. Also how many other cases do you think have been solved? Do you think law enforcement normally spends this much time on o.d.cases.

someone was on here a few months ago claiming that there was a lot of fentanyl pills that came up from mexico, they sounded like they'd studied the problem but i don't know if they were full of shit or not.

DEA Intelligence Brief | Counterfeit Prescription Pills Containing Fentanyls: A Global Threat:

"...The current fentanyl crisis is multi-faceted and involves a global supply of fentanyl and related materials. Counterfeit pills containing fentanyls are smuggled into the United States from Mexico and Canada (see Figure 1). Clandestine pill press operations also occur in the United States. Traffickers usually purchase powdered fentanyls and pill presses from China to create counterfeit pills to supply illicit U.S. drug markets. Under U.S. law, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) must be notified of the importation of a pill press. However, foreign pill press vendors often mislabel the equipment or send it disassembled to avoid law enforcement detection...."

Just a little perspective on how dependency works....ive had now 12 spine surgeries and am in debilitating pain every day. Thank God for ny pain mgt dr because without my meds, i cannot function. I literally cannot walk. When i take my meds i am able to live a pretty normal life. People would never ever know i take the kinds of meds i do. I take time released morhine with oxy (30mg) for breakthru pain. That is some strong meds. Lol. But ive been on some sort of pain meds since 2007. They eventually stop working bc your body becomes tolerant. Then u have to increase. Its a cycle. Never ending. If u met me you wouldnnt have q xlue i am on those meds. Im just like any other normal person. The perocet destoys your organs and it dont take lomg. One dr had me on a high dose post surgery one time and in a matter of 6 weeks my kidneys almost were failing. My mother is in stage 3 kidney failure bc of lomg term exposure to the tylenol in lorotab bc of her chronic paon. So it happens when u do not even suspspect it.

-- I am sorry for your situation but it sounds as if you are not abusing your Rx and the insinuation is that Prince was abusing these meds therefore I would imagine that the behavior of someone who is taking a controlled dosage would be very different from someone who was taking as many as they wanted and was doing it without an Rx.

Opioid dependency and OD deaths are a true crisis in the US right now, killimg more Americans than AIDS did at its peak.

U are right and i hate rhat insinuation. Cause honestly, to me, based on everything we have heard and seen of him, even tho he may have been getting them.om his own it sounds like his body was adjusted to and he wasnt abusing whatever he was taking. U know? If he was there is no way he could perform amd take care of business as usial without someone noticing or him being iff in some way. I feel like he just got a bad batch this last go around. His need for privacy ended up killing him.

This is what I believe as well. At least more than anything else that's been posted.
I don't have official records only my personal experience. The crisis started with treating patients with complaints of pain with these medications and specifically oxycontin. That was a game changer. Doctors were misled about its use and safety. It's a long story. But fast forward and now you have a nation of people hooked on opiates. Doctors are left to sort out the real patients from the drug seekers. As that happens and folks get cut off at the doctors office they go to the streets. Where they seek pills but have had to resort to heroin. That's not really new it's just taken awhile to become mainstream news. Now more recently the stakes have been raised with the addition of fentanyl.
I don't really know if they consider chronic pain patients in their "crisis". Doctors do indeed prescribe fentanyl (usually patches) along with a number of other opiate medications for managing their patients with chronic pain. Some of them even end up OD'ing by accident too, but generally it's because they mixed their meds with alcohol (huge no-no) or took them other than as prescribed. Patients who follow their doctors advice will generally do fine.
It's a hurtful place, the world, in and of itself. We don't need to add to it. We all need one another. ~ PRN
