I honestly believe he was suffering from some kind of arthritic condition in his hip and possibly other joints, which gave him difficulty walking. He went from doing a full arena tour of Australia in 2012 (of which I saw 4 shows) During whIch he was dancing, walking around and moving around non stop, like the prince we've always known - to then switching in 2013-2015 to a power rock trio 3rd EYE GIRL which allowed him to stay in just one place and play guitar, to then switching to just sitting at a piano because it would allow him to sit down for the performance and not have to walk around. Even at the 2012 Australian shows he was sitting in a black box and being wheeled to and from the stage to avoid walking, we took it as showmanship at the time but looking back I think he couldn't walk long distances, something was clearly up.

There may have been physical reasons for the Piano and a Microphone tour. Another reason could have been that since Hannah was pregnant, he did the tour without 3rd Eye Girl with the intention of getting back to his "normal" shows after she had the baby.

Prince had already moved on to another band, and planned a European piano tour before Hannah was pregnant.

not really, he had planned to do shows with his new band later in the year to promote Black is the new black album.

Planning to do something like that later doesn't refute the possibility that he was in bad physical condition when he chose to start doing the piano and mic shows.

I agree. There was talk during fall 2015 that Prince would bring the MonoNeon band on tour with him, and Prince told MonoNeon to get his passport ready, but then that didn't happen.

no he told his new band he was going to do a few more piano and mics then bring them in and start doing shows with them. No one seems to know the full truth yet, especially us fans, its just speculation. But those were his immediate plans for the near future. His own words, apparently.

Like everything else that he did, his higher voice guided him. I'm not sure he always knew the purpose of everything he did. In retrospect, it was to bring his career full circle.

When exactly did Prince tell them that? In November, Prince told Mono to get his passport ready ( https://twitter.com/drfun...4365009920 ). They had been rehearsing and playing shows at Paisley Park for a few months, but then Prince did an about-face and went on the piano tour alone. He had more piano shows planned after Atlanta. How long was he going to keep the band on the backburner?

If you think about it he could have done a solo show tour with just piano or just guitar at any point in his career post 1985.. Made truckloads of cash all for himself to keep, with no band to pay and no production costs. If he chose to. He wasn't interested in it it seems until he had no other option.

He chose to in 2016 because I believe circumstance forced him to, circumstances surrounding his health and ability to tour. this may have been his last attempt to see if he could physically handle this kind of a tour before pretty much retiring from touring and just giving performances at Paisley park, as he had been inviting audiences to come there remember : "Next time we see each other it's gonna be at Paisley park..."

No doubt this is true.

I do think that we will never know the full truth about what happened but there was a real medical condition for him to be taking pain medications.

Yeah, I'm more confused then ever. There's the rumors that Prince had hip surgery in 2010 to fix injuries from years of dancing, but then there is this pic of Prince from the Dirty mind tour with the left hip scar mentioned in the autopsy. So Prince has been dealing with this issue since his early twenties. Could it be a sports injury from high school? I don't know.

What hip scar are you seeing? The scar in the autopsy report was from his hip down and one was from his knee to his ankle.

Prince was FAR from staying in one place during the 3Rd Eye Girl shows, you know this.

He was doing this at least since the O2 shows in 2007.

i think maybe he did it, whether consciously or not, to cleanse himself musically and take it all down to what was pure Prince, with no outside influence. i think something new, great, and fresh would have come out of him after that tour no matter what direction he went in.

Of course he wasnt literally fixed in one spot through each performance, but Compared to the preceding tour and tours he didn't seem to be moving around as much or dancing as much

It's a faint curved scar starting from his posterior hip and along his buttock. If you look up images of hip surgery scar, its pretty much the same.

I am looking at this photo on a screen monitor and I dont see a surgical scar.

It appears to be "stretch marks" and not a surgical scar.

Don't you see the line running perpendicular to the stretch marks? It's curved. Here's a picture of a healed hip scar. It's very faint.

I saw P & 3rd Eye Girl perform on 5 different occasions from 2013-2015.

He definitely moved a lot less on the 2015 show I saw (the Autism Rocks show in London) than previous shows.

I wasn't agreeing with the part where the OP said he started 3rd Eye Girl in order to move less.

But I was definitely agreeing with the part where I believe Piano & A Microphone was at least partially done out of pain and limited mobility. He was in the grips of a serious painkiller addiction, are we trying to suggest he wasn't in serious pain?

I was also at Koko AR gig and yes he was a bit less active. I was also at PP in Jan last year at both shows and the first was very very personal to the point I was quite shocked what he was sharing. I met up with Jon Bream (Star Tribune) afterwards at Perkins and asked him what he thought and he too was very very surprised at what Prince shared. Jon has been interviewing him for over 25 years and said even 1-1 he hasn't been this open. Something was up whether people want to believe it or not

When I first heard of the P&M tour and found out how the Jan 2016 Paisley Park shows flowed back then, my first instinct was that yeah he is doing it in this format to help his joints and bones - due to his physical condition at the time. Less motion and flare and more just stripped down and giving the fans himself. Being a creative man of invention, thought it was an awesome way to present his music in a tour. And when I heard accounts on what those Jan 2016 shows actually consisted of I was damn jealous I wasn't there. History was definitely made at those two shows. I really wish the Jan 2016 PP performances will be released on vid.

I feel tht Prince did the Piano and Mic tour becasue he wanted to. I thought I read someone say that this was something he wanted to do for a long time but didn't. I think it was a great idea, just wish I could have gone to one.

Go back and read the autopsy report and see this article from Washington post with an interview from the journalist from Ebony who said Prince mentioned surgery in 2010. Not saying he could not have had multiple surgeries bit that does not look like a scar. https://www.google.com/am...ons-death/

Yes, I think that it probably was some kind of concession to his physical condition, or just his advancing age in general, at least in part. Quite apart from being some kind of “goodbye” tour, he may have been sketching out how he might adapt going forward. He couldn't have continued performing as he had been indefinitely, into his 60s and beyond. I wish he'd done it sooner, it's not as though he didn't have pure musicianship to fall back on.

I don't know if this is true. Footage of him rushing to and from limousines in the last year of his life show a nimble, quick-footed fellow. Also, during the 3EG shows he can be seen doing deep knee bends duration solos, something usually pretty difficult for even totally healthy 57-58 year old men.

that's right, none of it makes sense, he looks youthful in the judith hill video and he doesn't show any discomfort when he's getting pushed out the door or running in it. It's not just his face,it's his body too, he's not moving like he's hurting. However, there is enough evidence that he has also been dealing with issues too. One review of his P&M show mentions he wobbled a bit at the beginning of the show.

Too many people say that Prince is 'not like other people' and seem to put Prince on some higher human level. Especially when it comes to 'looking back' and celebrating what/who was/is.

He was just finally doing what humans do. Look back in appreciation for his career and the people that helped along the music and times.

This tour was a long time in coming. I wanted this in 2008/2009. I absolutely love Prince on guitar, but adore him on piano. Even more than any accoustic guitar pieces/demos, his piano pieces/demos feel so much more private and intimate.
