I think 'Everybody Loves Me' was intended as a joke. It has to be...

If you put yourself in the mindset of early 80s Controversy / Vanity 6 album tracks, then play it back to back with "No More Candy 4 U", it's kinda fun.

Kinda

Yeah, I don't see why so many fans rag on Everybody Loves Me and No More Candy 4 U in one breath, and then praise stuff like Jack U Off and Horny Toad in the next.

For the same reason they worship Controversy and 1999 or Extraloveable 82 and shit on Mplsound and 20ten or Extraloveable 2011. The great majority of them never had a clue what Prince was about, they were just subjugated by a certain moment in P's music while totally missing the very essence of his work, even though that essence is there throughout his whole career. Which would be OK if they hadn't devoted the last 20 years of their free time bitching at Prince on message boards because instead of solving their emotional problems in real life they had to blame and hate "papa Prince" for "abandoning" them poor babies rolleyes

TheKid94

I honestly used to dismiss a great part of the Love Symbol album because of my disdain for the Tony M. era. But recently I gave it a thorough listen and it's actually not bad. It honestly depends on the song. The rap on My Name Is Prince is absolute horseshit, and in all honesty ruins the song for me. But then Love 2 The 9's, Sexy MF, even The Flow! It just fit with the sound, and the vibe Prince was feeling at the time.

.

PRESSING ONWARD

.

The other day I was actually showing my friend some of Prince's worst songs (considering I'm always playing his best stuff), and we challenged ourselves to see how long we could listen to it before changing it.

.
The songs were:
.
Shut This Down- we got about 30 seconds in. This actually is a horrible song. Granted it's produced by Josh..but sitll.

.

Ain't About To Stop- skipped to rita bot blod clot part and laughed so hard, and still what the fuck is a Rita Bot...and why a blod clot? Also great gruitar and funk towards the end but why make us sit through 4 minutes of utter fuckery? Wanted so much more from Rita & Prince it's a shame this is all we got.

.

Everybody Loves Me- a real turd, but I think he knew it...but I also know for a fact he did not care lol

.

Chocolate Box- I used to listen to this song alot, but I was 14 and in highschool and I was just so into new Prince that I thought I loved it. However, there is something about Prince rocking the socks using autotune that just isn't okay. The problem here is the lyrics and their execution, not the music. Because it bumps. And then dumps. A lot. lol

.

Lion of Judah- It's the chorus that really dissapoints on this one. The build of the opening chords, a sensual first verse, and his smooth vocals into a chorus that feels like you've been fed a mouthful of dead grass.

....actually that was a bit harsh. Just not my cup of tea.

.

Everyday Is A Winding Road- Why? I went to a Prince dance party in Brooklyn a couple months ago and they played this fucking song. But whhyyyyyyyyyy?

.

ANYWHO as we all know Prince is a genius and it came in waves. With every album we got the good and the bad, and that is the true work of an artist in the process!

Several people said P&G fulfilled its purpose as a sports anthem.

Now lemme ask you that: does a sports anthem need to sound like something sang by a bunch of drunk sailors in a britton bar in the 19th century? I'm not a sports person because sports too often celebrate a gross and vulgar view of manhood, but I believe in the 21st century a sports anthem can be sexy. I mean even Sheila bashed Prince about that song, releasing her own, super funky linn drum instrumental as an answer to it. Prince could have come-up with something a little sexier.

why are you so obsessed with judging it on what you want it to be rather than what he wanted it to be? It's far from a favourite of mine but it was what it was, another string to his musical bow. Come on mr "I own 10 thousand cd's from the past few years" time to show your open mind!

Well I'm usually not known for passing judgement over music. Remember I'm usually the one to repeat "works of arts should be judged over what the artist intended to so, not over how the listener feel about them". I usually try to think beyond my personal appreciation and there's probably no more than a dozen Prince songs, out of the hundreds that we have, that I'd say are complete artistic failures. But that one, as objectively as I can be objective, I think it was really bad. I may be wrong because to some extent I'm not even sure what it is that Prince was trying to achieve there. I even wonder if he himself saw any real artistic value to it or if it was just a tongue in cheek act of support for a football team. But the bottom line is I find it gross and ridiculously caricatural. Now that's OK because at the same time I could spend hours praisong Mplsound, Elixer, Lotusflow3r or 20ten, so it's not like I don't think Prince released awesome music around that time. But P&G, I say it doesn't make sense. Now of course I'd have to be able to sit with Prince and listen to him explaining what he had in mind when he composed it and maybe then it'd make some sense to me.

.

At the end of the day the thread was asking about what we think is P's worst song so if I was to contribute I had to pick one, didn't I? And whatever the song I'd have picked I couldn't have been raving about it, could I? It could have been Go Go Dancer, Fantasia Erotica, This Is My World, Children Of The Sun or The Rhythm Of Ur Heart. Or maybe a piece or 2 from Kamasutra. Or Love '89 or Dance Un2 The Rhythm. But at the end of the day my pick is Purple & Gold, no contest. So sue me...

BTW it's not 10 thousands and I didn't make-up that figure. I could send you a list of my mp3 albums collection and you'd see yourself that I do, indeed, own nearly 5000 albums, including a good thousand from the past 10 years.

Wow! Some interesting opinions. Purple and Gold was pretty bad to me. Saying Tamborine, Pope, 3 Chains of Gold, Lion of Judah, or others are worse than that baffles my mind. Oh well everyone is entitled to their opinion. I'll take Tony M and Jughead over Purple and Gold anyday.

The thing is, at least Purple & Gold succeeds in what it set out to do. Pope or Jughead doesn't even have that going for it.

Something obscure off the album.. I don't know 'Kamasutra'?. Mainstream big album? 'Jughead' for an obvious reason.. It's really shit and millions of people heard it.

Man you fooled me.

Not to mention the stellar, legendary jams : the 1984 Birthday Show,
and the 1985 Miami soundcheck.

"Worst song", what an old, lame thread.

Why are people shying away from the O word here? Orgasm is the clear winner of this contest. Does anyone ever listen to this one repeatedly? I get the hate for Purple & Gold, but there is something kind of campy fun about that misfire. Orgasm is Prince at his most self-indulgent.
