Here is a vintage MTV News segment featuring Tamar Davis speaking about meeting and collaborating with Prince:

Wooow! It's so weird this clip is considered "vintage" now. I remember watching this in middle school and replaying that little section of Sunday in the Park as I did not get my hands on her album. Memories... thanks for posting! This was a really great era.

I want to know more information about the musical collaborations between Prince & Tamar, unreleased music, what stuff they wrote together etc etc, Like we did on the Prince & Andy thread, before it went off into a bunch of 'who love who more' stuff

Well we ARE able to hear them, it's not like they haven't leaked.

They may well have been leaked but some of us don't know where/how to find them. I don't have any type of 'connections' in which to have all of these tracks/videos that alot of you folks have in your collections. lol The only bootlegs that I have are one of The Black Album and two discs that a friend from Norway brought over when he came to visit years ago. Those two discs are of poor quality, you can tell that someone just brought in a cassette recorder, hid it somewhere in the room and hit 'Record'.

Early years and cooperation with Prince

Around 1994, Prince heard a demo by Támar and told her that one day when she was older, he wanted to hear her again. A few years later, Prince called her into his Paisley Park studio. Nothing transpired from that visit, nor did she get to meet with Prince, so Támar went about doing her own thing, graduating from Houston's High School for the Performing and Visual Arts, and then studying music business at the University of Southern California, all while focusing on her musical career. Támar who also speaks French, German and Swahili became part of an all-female jazz/funk band called Angaza (which means "to give light" in Swahili), who released an album called Light. At the time, she went by the name Ashley T'Amar Davis.

In 2004 she auditioned for Star Search once again as a solo artist but did not prevail through the competitions. In the fourth season of American Idol she auditioned, but did not make the cut. While living in Los Angeles, she snared an invite to one of Prince's house parties and introduced herself to him. He remembered meeting the saucy singer and asked her to audition for him on the spot, which she did. He then asked her to sing in a video he was working on. She signed with Universal Records the same day Prince did in December 2005.

In 2006, Támar toured with Prince, helping to promote his album 3121. She appeared with him on Saturday Night Live (February 4, 2006), Good Morning America, the Brit Awards, as well as his video, "Fury", where she appears alongside fellow female singer/dancers the Twinz, two former Australian Idol contestants.

Kept Woman is the eighth track on Bria Valente's first and only studio album Elixer. Although the song is credited as being written by Bria Valente and Prince (along with the rest of the album), the song dates from before Bria Valente started working with Prince, and was written only by him. The song was produced and largely performed by Bria Valente and Prince.

Exact recording dates are unknown, but the track was initially recorded by Támar Davis, indicating that intitial tracking took place at some point between early 2005 (when Prince first worked with Támar Davis) and early 2006, when it was included on Támar's first album, then titled Beautiful, Loved & Blessed; it was included as the fifth track when the album was later renamed Milk & Honey. Prince started working with Bria Valente in late 2006, so her recording of the track may have been recorded anytime between late 2006 and early 2009 at either Paisley Park Studios, Chanhassen, MN, USA or Circle House, Miami, FL, USA, but no information has been verified.

That's not exactly right - Tamar was the headline act on the tour, Prince was the guitarist/band leader. And they weren't promoting 3121.

I got it from here: https://en.wikipedia.org/...T%C3%A1mar

In March 2006, Támar was supported by Prince with an ensemble of session musicians and performed a number of small club concerts in Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Atlanta and Miami to promote her upcoming album. The concerts included cuts from her Milk & Honey album, as well as cover versions of such artists as Mary J. Blige and Aretha Franklin. Prince fans, who were really there to see him, were also treated to him performing rare tunes during her costume changes, including "Anotherloverholenyohead", "Partyman" and "Calhoun Square" (from Crystal Ball). Also of interest was the full complement doing a cover of Michael Jackson's "Don't Stop 'til You Get Enough" with Prince playing the synthesizer solo from the original recording on the guitar. The concerts were approximately 90 minutes in length. Bootlegs are currently in circulation of some (if not all) of these concerts.

Saw P and Tamar at Electric Factory in Philly, small venue. It was a tight set led by Tamar's powerful voice with Prince on guitar and directing the band. The best was during a jam he finally approached the mic... To sing Partyman of all things. I made eye contact a few times eek lol

True, I saw Tamar's concert here in Houston, where Prince acted as the guitarist and kept to the left side of the stage with shades on for the bulk of material from Tamar. But then he took over for the ending and the encore. That was a crazy overcrowded night, but I was right up there at the front.

I just remembered, I had some early "intelligence" into Tamar and Prince from 2006:

goo.gl/K9okby

"She went there with her friend "Ashley" who is singing on Prince's new album.
Ashley was there with 2 male dancers to perform that night with Prince
they had to park and walk the length of a long driveway
the house has two wings, seemed like two houses, one for living, one for entertaining
upstairs a long staircase is the dance floor.... on the third story is a bar and performance stage
After the performance Ashley and the friend left.
Before the performance, the dancers and Ashley and the friend were mingling, but after they left.
there are chandeliers in the bathrooms
The friend was told she could not use her cellphone inside the house.
She tried to argue with the body guards and say that she was not even a fan when they told her to not use her cellphone (because of possible picture taking). they were nice and smiling. "

This "Ashley" turned out to be Tamar.

A little bit more to that, Ashley Davis used to also hang around with Beyonce and her crew of Houston singers that were trying to get it together.

"As a child, Davis was one of the original members of the group Girl's Tyme, which eventually became Destiny's Child. Her parents pulled her out of the group, wanting her to get a college education, but after she left, the group's popularity skyrocketed."

And, I start teaching this semester 2017 at the High School for Performing and Visual Arts! (Just as a part time guest instructor on an intro to screenwriting class.)

Yeah she really got me when she talked about the framed photo of her and her dad that Prince gave her. Just shows the guy really was a thoughtful person with a big heart. Here's another great interview with Elisa Fiorillo. http://www.msnbc.com/week...2401475987 I've watched numerous interviews with Prince associates over the past year and so many of them were emotional. It's unfortunate that Prince has this reputation of being a jerk or whatever because I think he really mellowed a lot and was a guy with a lot of love and a big heart. [Edited 1/14/17 23:20pm]

It just goes to show how people can be painted with a broad brush because people think they "know" someone. It is almost unbelievable the amount of philanthropic gestures and unsolicited mentoring that Prince initiated (with no fanfare or spotlight) that have been shared in the past 9 months from various stars and family.

This guy was unbelievable and so much more than "all about the music".

Thanks - ACharmed1. This is the video from the Asian website. P really did have a lot of respect and affection for Tamar. The performance went really well and he seemed to be thrilled that they nailed it so he hugged her tight. I said Andy Allo was the first of P's curly haired babes, but it was actually Tamar. You are right. I don't get the vibe that he had anything going with Tamar. I think he felt bad that she was drawn unfairly into his divorce drama when she was just trying to get her career off the ground. She is extremely talented.

Although it doesn't seem like they are doing anything wrong per say, my friend has influenced me somewhat in admitting that the picture does look a little intimate, but Prince has a way in some pictures that makes him look like he's up to no good at times, lol, lol I never thought about the hand. Maybe it's under her jacket? [Edited 1/15/17 11:05am]

Her right arm is behind him. In any case, if his marriage was over and they were together I personally see nothing wrong with that. He would have been better off with a normal decent woman like Tamar compared to some that were a complete waste of time and money. He may be alive today if he had married a decent and unselfish person.

nod Agreed. He had a huge heart, and loved taking care of others. Always wanting 2 make sure every1 was "cool".

I think ppl that view him as a jerk don't seem 2 understand he was a boss as well. And like any good boss he pushed ppl 2 be their best and achieve perfection. The stories about him docking ppl and things like that... it's kinda like besides firing some1 what else was he supposed 2 do, allow horrible sound or playing? And then that's taken as a "jerk" move. The man was flawed as we all R and made mistakes but his heart was always in the right place. A lot of what he did was self preservation mode 2, protecting his own heart.

And after all the things he'd been thru in his life 1 can't blame the poor guy.

I totally agree with you. I don't recall too many things about what others did for P. It was take, take, take and complain until he passed then everyone starts to cry about his kindness and big heart. For a kid who was kicked out of his home to make it big and live his dream of making music, traveling the world, owning several fantastic homes and properties, and becoming incredibly rich. I think P deserves a lot of respect and a bow!

If you talk to people who worked with him in the last 12-15 years you'd get a different impression of the man than someone that worked with him in the 80s or early to mid 90s. That's not to say he was a saint or couldn't still be difficult at times. But I really think he had become a different person, a better person.

I believe he evolved. I find offense in those trying to make him a man mentoring younger women just to get in their pants. I believe he was a man of the arts and mentored them all for real. Not as a boyfriend or lover-

Tamar was a great talent and I belive she saw him as an Uncle . I enjoy her performance of fury with him at the Brit Awards also - beautiful young woman, great talent and she is not pimping her time with Prince to sell concert tickets or get attention on the net. I respect her very much.

I absolutely love Tamar's voice.
I feel very strongly that Prince really cared about these young people and loved mentoring them.
P was so grateful for all he had, and at some point you have to start giving back or you become very self-consumed. This is why altruism is at the highest of human development. 😇
