Vanity - background vocals (played in reverse) Initial tracking took place in Spring-Summer 1982 at Prince's Kiowa Trail Home Studio, Chanhassen, MN, USA, along with several other tracks that would re-appear over the next several years. Prince remixed the track slightly in 1985 at an unknown location (Sunset Sound, Hollywood, CA, USA, is likely).

Thank you for this thread and the amount of material you are posting. I am appreciating this album so much more than before. I do have a question pertaining to the album cover. All of models were identified except for maybe the three characters standing behind 'Clara Bow'? Are they angels? Who were the models? I am curious. Do you know?

Thank U. No, I'm still researching were I can. Still my favorite album cover for the mystery of it all
It all makes me wonder if many of them are somehow connected to songs(unreleased)
Girl, U excite me so

The B-Side of the track was "Girl", a light pop number which speaks of Prince's lust for a woman. Featuring a minimal drum loop and sparse synthesizer lines, Prince's lust is in such force that he declares that "all I have to do is think about you and i can have an orgasm" as he invites her to feel how sweaty his hands have gotten from their meeting. The full length version from the 12" features backmasking of Wendy Melvoin reciting the lyrics with the word "boy" replacing "girl".

Thank you for your reply OldFriends4Sale. I like unraveling the possible meanings of those images on the cover and connecting them to songs. Doing this and reading the lyrics you post make the album more rich to me than before. I watched the video and I think the three are represented by the violin and cello players. Maybe they are supposed to be monks? Oh, the mystery. Thank you again for sharing your knowledge. Peace.

Thank you for sharing this painting and the words of Mr Warren. I see many connections between this artwork and the album cover. But especially, I notice four things: the ladder leading up to the sky. a paisley design on top of the cliff. three birds as doves or seagulls, and the girl on the seesaw in a park. Paisley Park?
Added: There are the three or four (?) hooded persons which I connect to the shrouded ones on the album cover. Highly interesting.

Initial tracking took place on 19 February 1984 at Sunset Sound, Hollywood, CA, USA (after completing overdubs on Another Lonely Christmas). The recording session lasted until around 6:15 am the following morning, 20 February 1984. Band overdubs were added later the same day. Prince worked on the track further in mid-April 1984, most likely also at Sunset Sound. Rumors have suggested that the booing crowd sampled in the song is from Prince's infamous opening act for the Rolling Stones, from October 1981, but the samples in fact come from a sound library set by the company Sound Ideas
On 28 September 1984, Wendy Melvoin and Lisa Coleman oversaw the string overdubs (without Prince's supervision), at Sunset Sound (during the same sessions as string overdubs on Our Destiny). Sheila E.'s remix of the track was mixed on the 22nd and 23rd June 1985, most likely also at Sunset Sound. -PrinceVault

Do you like the album version better than the extended version?
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Yes
| |
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
The extended version is a little better.
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
Me liking the album cut vs the long version is like
10 to 9
I mean I love both of them, just the extended 4 me doesn't do a whole lot more. Love the ending of it though.
