Do you read most of what's been written about you?

Not long ago I talked too George Clinton, a man who knows and has done so much for funk. George told me how much he liked Around the World in a Day. You know how much more his words meant than those from some mamma-jamma wearing glasses and an alligator shirt behind a typewriter?

Do you hate rock critics? Do you think they're afraid of you?

[Laughs] No, it's no big deal. Hey, I'm afraid of them! One time early in my career, I got into a fight with a New York writer, this real skinny cat, a real sidewinder. He said, "I'll tell you a secret, Prince. Writers write for other writers, and a lot of time it's more fun to be nasty." I just looked at him. But when I really thought about it and put myself in his shoes, I realized that's what he had to do. I could see his point. They can do whatever they want. And me, too. I can paint whatever picture I want with my albums. And I can try to instill that in every act I've ever worked with.

What picture were you painting with 'Around the World in a Day'?

[Laughs] I've heard some people say that I'm not talking about anything on this record. And what a lot of other people get wrong about the record is that I'm not trying to be this great visionary wizard. Paisley Park is in everybody's heart. It's not just something that I have the keys to. I was trying to say something about looking inside oneself to find perfection. Perfection is in everyone. Nobody's perfect, but they can be. We may never reach that, but it's better to strive than not.

"Brotha ain't got no teeth." He ruined that picture for me. falloff

uptown #37 spring of 1999. This is an article written by David J. Magdziarz

Doug Henders was asked to create the cover art for Around the World in A day shortly before Christmas 1984. He was given a brief 15-point outline from Prince with some ideas of what he wanted graphically. "The process of creating the cover work and the rock trip (Purple Rain tour) itself were very gruelling," says Henders. "I think that's reflected in the melancholic rendering of the painting."

For some of the images, Henders snapped Polaroid photos of Revolution band members and people close to the band. Then he slightly altered the face or real-life features for the painting. "Most of the figures on the cover are characters in the songs, but I think some of the people Prince wanted are parts of himself, so they're all of a piece and somewhat autobiographical," Henders explains. "The little puppy in the picture was added simply because Princ got himself a dog while on the road."

The woman from "rasberry beret" also makes and appearance; holding an apple, she is like the modern-day Eve in Prince's hippie style paradise.

THE ELECTRIFYING MOJO (1986)
-----

On the eve of his birthday in 1986, Prince gave a surprise interview to legendary Detroit disc jockey the Electrifying Mojo. He had never offered a live radio interview before. Of the experience, Mojo later said:

"I had no idea he was going to call. I had no list of questions or anything like that. First I talked to Billy Sparks and he said, 'Hey Mojo! Prince wants to talk to you. You got a minute?' I said, 'Do I have a minute? Give me a minute to make sure we have a tape on,' and Prince says, 'Hey Mojo! What's happening? This is Prince.' If I hadn't heard Billy Sparks' voice prior to that, I may have said, 'Yeah, right.'"

The following is the text of the spoken interview, as transcribed by Rose Gardner on the Emancipation mailing list.

MOJO: Let's talk about the album, Around The World In A Day... which I think was one of the greatest albums.

PRINCE: My favorite!

MOJO: It's absolutely my favorite, without question. Tunes like "Around The World In A Day," "Paisley Park." What type of mood were you in when you recorded that album?

PRINCE: Yeah, I sorta had an f-you attitude, meaning that I was making something for myself and my fans. And the people who supported me through the years -- I wanted to give them something and it was like my mental letter.

And those people are the ones who wrote me back, telling me that they felt what I was feeling. Record sales and things like that...it really doesn't matter, ya know. It keeps a roof over your head, and keeps money in all these folks' pockets that I got hangin' around here! (laughs) It basically stems from the music, and I'm just hoping that people understand that money is one thing but soul is another. That's all we're really trying to do, you know? Idon't know.

I wouldn't mind if I just went broke, you know, 'cuz as long as I can play this type of thing and come here, ya know. There were a lot of people there tonight and they turned the lights on and I looked up...it brings tears to your eyes because it's just -- you can feel the love in the room, ya know? And that means more than money. I could just go on for hours...I don't know, I just have fun, and I'm thankful to be alive, ya know?

The video is an odd mashup of performance footage and animation. Simon Fields, who was one of the top music video producers at the time, said in the book I Want My MTV: "We filmed a whole video, then Prince got a Japanese animator to do a completely different video and we mashed the two up. He would mess with directors. He would give them the impression that they'd be in charge of the video, then halfway through he'd go 'Thank you,' take what he liked, and edit it himself."

Exhibit A: as a teenager, he was an extra in Prince's video for "Raspberry Beret." The director tried to toss him out because he couldn't dance, but as was trudging off, Prince himself called him back because he liked Pat's style (at the time, dreads).

A few hours later, Prince is kneeling in front of the VCR, showing his "Raspberry Beret" video. He explains why he started the clip with a prolonged clearing of the throat. "I just did it to be sick, to do something no one else would do." He pauses and contemplates. "I turned on MTV to see the premiere of 'Raspberry Beret' and Mark Goodman was talking to the guy who discovered the backward message on 'Darling Nikki.' They were trying to figure out what the cough meant too, and it was sort of funny." He pauses again. "But I'm not getting down on him for trying. I like that. Why did you make the announcement that there'd be no singles or videos from that LP, and then start issuing singles and making videos anyway?

Because I wanted this album to be listened to, judged, critiqued as a whole. It's hard to take a trip and go around the block, and stop when the trip is 400 miles. Dig?

Jackie Swanson

In 1985, Swanson made her professional debut in the Prince video Raspberry Beret. She and Prince were friends. He wrote a song entitled Palomino Pleasure Ride for her. In 1987, Swanson made her feature debut in the opening scene of Lethal Weapon. She played Amanda Hunsaker, who falls to her death from a building onto the hood of a car. She performed this free-fall stunt from 35 feet into an airbag under the training of stuntman Dar Robinson. Lethal Weapon would be Swanson's first time working with cinematographer Steven Goldblatt. She worked with Steven Goldblatt again on Charlie Wilson's War.

In 1989, Swanson joined the cast of Cheers in the recurring role of Kelly Gaines. Her character was a pretty, wealthy, naïve, Lutheran girl, who would eventually marry Woody Boyd, played by Woody Harrelson. She continued to appear in the show until the series ended in 1993.

Palomino (pabreve.gifllprime.gifschwa.gif-memacr.gifprime.gifnomacr.gif)is a coat color in horses, consisting of a gold coat and white mane and tail.

Due to their unusual color, palominos stand out in a show ring, and are much sought after as parade horses. They were particularly popular in movies and television during the 1940s and 1950s.

Palomino horses have a yellow or gold coat, with a white or light cream mane and tail. The shades of the body coat color range from cream to a dark gold.

Only God, who makes a cameo appearance, knows when he had time to lay down the tracks.

Where Prince has taken the sweat and other bodily fluids out of his lyrics, he's also reformulated the music.

Raspberry Beret" is a sweetly wistful seduction song, -

Raspberry Beret" is a song by Prince and The Revolution. It was the first U.S. (and second UK) single from their 1985 album, Around the World in a Day. The sound was different from any previous Prince track, incorporating Middle Eastern finger cymbals, stringed instruments, and even a harmonica on the extended version. The song was also more in the pop vein than ever before, though the 12-inch single and video of the song feature a funky intro. Although the song was originally recorded in 1982 at Kiowa Trail Home Studio, in Spring/Summer , Prince drastically reworked it with The Revolution to give it more of an international sound. The string section was: Novi Novog on violin, Suzie Katayama and David Coleman on cello. Wendy & Lisa composed and conducted the strings on Raspberry Beret. Wendy & Lisa provided backing vocals, and the rest of the song was performed by Prince. Basic tracks for the album version were recorded in August, 1984 at Flying Cloud Drive Warehouse, Eden Prairie, MN, USA.

Yeah

I was working part time in a five-and-dime
My boss was mr. mcgee
He told me several times that he didn't like my kind
Cause I was a bit 2 leisurely

Seems that I was busy doing something close 2 nothing
But different than the day before
That's when I saw her, ooh, I saw her
She walked in through the out door, out door

She wore a
Raspberry beret
The kind u find in a second hand store
Raspberry beret
And if it was warm she wouldn't wear much more
Raspberry beret
I think I love her

Built like she was
She had the nerve 2 ask me
If I planned 2 do her any harm

So, look here
I put her on the back of my bike
And-a we went riding
Down by old man johnsons farm

I said now, overcast days never turned me on
But something about the clouds and her mixed

She wasn't 2 bright
But I could tell when she kissed me
She knew how 2 get her kicks

She wore a
Raspberry beret
The kind u find in a second hand store
Raspberry beret
And if it was warm she wouldn't wear much more
Raspberry beret
I think I love her

The rain sounds so cool when it hits the barn roof
And the horses wonder who u are
Thunder drowns out what the lightning sees
U feel like a movie star

Listen
They say the first time aint the greatest
But I tell ya
If I had the chance 2 do it all again

I wouldn't change a stroke
Cause baby Im the most
With a girl as fine as she was then

(raspberry beret)
The kind u find (the kind u find)
The kind u find (in a second hand store)
Oh no no
(raspberry beret)
(and if it was warm)
Where have all the raspberry women gone? (she wouldn't wear much more)
Yeah (raspberry beret)

I think i... I think i... I think I love her

(raspberry beret)
No no no
No no no (the kind u find)
(in a second hand store)
(raspberry beret)
Tell me
Where have all the raspberry women gone? (and if it was warm she)
(wouldnt wear much more)

Prince originally recorded "Raspberry Beret" in 1982, but re-worked it with his newly-reformed Revolution backing band, which had just crystalized into what would become the fan-favorite line-up: Brown Mark on bass, Bobby Z on drums, Wendy Melvoin, Lisa Coleman and Doctor Fink on keyboard, backing guitar, and backing vocals

Are there any outtakes or other songs from this era besides (heh) the b-sides like "Hello" and "She's Always In My Hair"? I actually like those songs quite a bit more than 1/3 of the actual album tracks.

.

Certainly anything recorded between early Summer 1984 through early 1985 might qualify on one or more grounds for entry:

.

* 100 MPH

* 4 The Tears In Your Eyes

* A Love Bizarre

* All Day, All Night

* Desire

* Drawers Burnin' (Unknown if a studio take exists)

* God (Vocal)

* Heaven (Recorded two days after 'Hello', approximately a month after the release of the ATWIAD)

* High Fashion

* Mutiny

* Miss Understood

* Nothing Compares 2 U

* Our Destiny

* River Run Dry

* Roadhouse Garden

* Screams of Passion

* The Dance Electric

.

Hi, concerning this part of the thread, is there a sort of a map site or guide to know which unreleased songs belong to each era? I've seen come "Homemade Deluxe" versions with a "second disc" of some albums, but it seems some songs overlap more than 1 album, like God (Vocal) on this list, but it also was a PR b-side. Any idea? Thanks in advance.

Any idea? Thanks in advance.

.

Hard 2 tell what song are outtakes or connected to the ATWIAD project. Hopefully we can get a Susan Rogers interview about this one, Wendy Melvoin Lisa Coleman etc shedding some more light on it. ATWIAD & Romance 1600 both happened during the Purple Rain tour so ...

.

I think all those FAMILY album songs ^ were meant 4 the Family album

.

With the intent & focus/vision of the ATWIAD album the only one I C as possibly working is The Dance Electric.

.

Heaven was recorded after ATWIAD was recorded and released

,

God(the Dance Electric) was released as a PR Bside, so it wasn't going to be on ATWIAD, even though it would work

.

Miss Understood was also directly intended for the Family album and 4 the Tears In Your Eyes was written specifically for the We Are the World project.

When RASPBERRY BERET became the first hit single, it zoomed to the Top Five. A wonderfully picturesque narrative, the song featured strings arranged by Lisa Coleman

Prince unveils new studio album
'Around the World in a Day' should be out in April

BY MICHAEL GOLDBERG

PRINCE'S SEVENTH ALBUM, Around the World in a Day, should be in record stores before the end of April. The LP, which was recorded both at Price's home studio in Minneapolis and at Hollywood studios, contains nine tracks that, according to the LP's credits, were "produced, arranged, composed and performed by Prince and the Revolution."

Prince unveiled the record on Thursday, February 21st. Warner Bros. Records executives received a phone call late in the afternoon that day informing them that the label's biggest star would be arriving at their Burbank headquarters in forty-five minutes. Interoffice phones buzzed with the news, and a huge crowd of Warners staffers hurriedly assembled in the front lobby.

At about five p.m., a shiny purple limousine pulled up outside the record company's building. Prince stepped out of the car, along with his father, John L. Nelson; his bodyguards(Chick); his managers; and Revolution guitarist Wendy Melvoin. Dressed in a long, purple antique kimono and striped, pajama-type pants, Prince clutched a single pink rose as he entered the building. Obviously pleased and looking quite confident, Prince smiled as the crowd greeted him with tumultuous applause. "I've seen Fleetwood Mac and David Lee Roth and Shaun Cassidy and everyone walk into this building," said one Warner Bros. employee, "but nothing like this."

Prince's entourage trooped past more fans crowded along the stairways and corridors, up to a fourth-floor conference room that had been hastily decorated with hundreds of purple helium balloons and white streamers. About 150 Warners staffers and executives -- including president Lenny Waronker and board chairman Mo Ostin -- were crammed into the room. Except for a few words with Ostin, Prince was silent. He sat on the floor with Wendy and his father, stared at the ground and held on to the rose as tapes of the album played at full volume.

...while "Raspberry Beret" is another track that recalls the Beatles' psychedelic period ("She wore a Raspberry beret/The kind u find in a secondhand store/And if it was warm, she wouldn't wear much more")...

...

Until late last month, details about the album were closely guarded secrets. At Warner Bros., only a handful of top executives knew about it. Still, rumors began circulating in music-business circles, and at least one advance tape got into the hands of a rival record-company executive.

In the Warner Bros. conference room, every song was greeted with applause, and before the last cut ended, Prince vanished. Said a Warners source, "Everyone sort of stood up and applauded after the record was over, and then he wasn't there anymore."

this was the first Prince album I bought on release after discovering him with PR.

I never tire of this album. it's like a world onto itself. to my ears this is some next level shit.

sure it's psychedelic but it's mostly just Prince being Prince and playing around. I love these threads you make, oldfriends, it's cool to play the album while reading. peace out.

“My hunch is that Prince conceived of the album as a gesture sketch because he wanted to experiment stylistically,” says Susan Rogers.Purple Rain represented a new point in his commercial success and so its follow up needed to promote a new direction if longevity was the goal. Around the World in a Day was the interim record while later works were incubating.”

Great thread I loved this album!Thus began my lifetime of defending Prince from ppl who wanted Purple Rain part II. Seeing Raspberry Beret video was like a breath of fresh air...he got a haircut!hes not wearing ruffles or purple! He has on a cloud suit!
Of course I loved and appreciated the experimentation and evolving sound. Great b-sides too "She's Always In My Hair" comes to mind
Such a "free" time

Prince originally recorded "Raspberry Beret" in 1982, but re-worked it with his newly-reformed Revolution backing band, which had just crystalized into what would become the fan-favorite line-up: Brown Mark on bass, Bobby Z on drums, Wendy Melvoin, Lisa Coleman and Doctor Fink on keyboard, backing guitar, and backing vocals.

"I thought I would never be able to play like my dad," he said. "And he never missed an opportunity to remind me of it." But Prince's playing belied his modesty. His florid right-hand runs had a little of the theatricality of Liberace in them, but with more tasteful jazz inflections as well. Paying tribute to his past collaborators Wendy Melvoin and Lisa Coleman, he credited Lisa with introducing him to the complex chording of jazzman Bill Evans then played the harpsichord part she wrote for "Raspberry Beret." "That's the whole song, right?"
