Since Prince died, it was hard for me to listen to his music....

.

I'm wondering if anyone feels the same way; after Prince died, I had a very hard time listening to his music, or any other music for that matter. I just picked-up HnR, P2.....and I can't wait to listen to it. It's been 8-months since his passing, and I'm slowly starting to listen to his music again. I felt the same way after my Mom died, 3-years ago; I could not listen to any music for almost a year or longer. I think the reason why is because music is so emotional and takes us back to a certain place and time in our lives. Like, when we lose a loved one; or go through a painful break-up or divorce, it's hard to listen to certain songs anymore without breaking-down. Anywho, just thought I would share & thanks for listening! biggrin

.

Peace & Love! prince heart

I am so happy for you. I LOVED the beginnings of becoming familiar with that album.
I started with the one song that really stood out to me and listened over and over and then did the same bit by bit with the rest of the songs. It was a process that went on for months. 6 months later I would still hear new things in each song because there is SO much going on musically.

People who understand that layered process over time of coming to hear and appreciate a Prince song understand what I mean.

This album is DELICIOUS!
Have fun!!!

Quite a few of us felt this way, look back at the sticky posts from April & on. nod I still avoid his slower emotional stuff, it still upsets me, but I don't skip his songs anymore like I did at first. I gotta get on with it & enjoy it while I'm still here! Discovering 20TEN helped a lot, & old boots. I'm guessing it'll be a full 2 years before I can listen like I used to, with nothing but joy. I may never get there, but I hope to. heart

you ain't lyin', and you're not alone.

I find it hard to listen to alot of his older stuff, especially songs where he harmonizes and layers his vocals, a la, Adore, for instance. Hearing it gives me a hard reminder, a gut check if you will, that the creator of these wonderous sounds is no longer here and I will most likely never hear new harmonies like that again. I think it's a reminder, for me at least, that what I looked up to as being something outside of the music that is crammed down our throats is gone and I really can't see anyone as fierce, dynamic, and talented as Prince was, at least not in my lifetime.

I've only started listening to his music again, recently. After he died, I just could not listen to any of his music, and if I heard it played on the TV or somewhere else, it instantly made me sad, and my eyes filled with tears. Now, I listen to it, but not for long periods of time like I used to. Last night, I was channel surfing and happen to see Purple Rain playing. I happened to tune in during the end, where he was singing Purple Rain, and wouldn't you know it, my eyes filled with tears just seeing him, watching him sing Purple Rain and play the guitar. I then start to feel sad because I know he's no longer here, and we will never see him play or sing alive again......such a loss.

looks like I'm the opposite to the majority:

since princes passing I listen 2 his music every day. I can't listen 2 anything else. but unlike I did before I listen to ALL his music now. including the tunes I didn' like too much when I heard them the first time. all my life there was so much prince music around I truly loved and couldn't get enough of that I didn't feel the need 2 give those "poor" songs a second try. but now I did. and I fell in love with a new gem almost every day. and still do. I listened 2 some lyrics like I never did before. and there are so many tunes growing on me each and every day. and I'm growing on them. and feel his inspiration every day. his passion. and his love. there's not one moment I'm not aware of the loss. and there's not one day I'm not sad. but keeping him in my life (actually more than I did before when I thought I had enough time) helps me grieving and moving on at the same time. this may sound weird but it works 4 me. the only album I still have a hard time 2 listen 2 is HnR2 ... too fresh. too much "the last one". too ... bheart

the only love there is is the love we make heart

It's so interesting that about half of us haven't been able to listen to his music, and the other half us (I'm in this group) have pretty much only listened to his music.
What has made me sad is listening to any music that isn't Prince. It's almost as though that will bring me into the reality of it all.
At first I would just sob and sob listening to Prince's music, then I started exploring music I had missed and became so interested in it and the man, that it became good.

Interesting that you mention 20Ten. I just got this today. I just decided this afternoon to make the very long drive to family holiday this weekend - and am so looking forward to enjoying this. Prince's music is one thing that centers me...his Spirit and Love are in it.

i always listened to lots of Prince but i've been listening to more. sure i get sad and choked up sometime when I'm listening and I do hear some of the songs differently, especially the ones on his last 3 albums. You can here he's already got one foot in the grave on some of those songs and he doesn't really seem to be too upset about it. Elvis' song, Way Down, sounds hellish instrumentally, lyrically he's describing his predicament with the pills but..., he's actually sounds eager and thrilled at the experience of death and an after life. Prince's Way Back Home is his version of that but he sounds resigned and accepting, not particularly eager but not upset either. I could see that one being hard to listen to.

i have trouble listening to his more recent albums like the hit 'n run series, because i remember how he played them for us at Paisley Park and it still breaks my heart that he's gone.

but i've been listening to a lot of old favorites like emancipation, crystal ball, chaos and disorder and such. for some reason that's comforting

ya, the music when he was still spry just takes you back to a time when we were all younger and more hopeful.

I credit it with getting me back to being comfortable listening nod it's a very digestible album, goes down so easy. I must have played it 10+ times in a row when I first heard it, & it was all I wanted to hear for DAYS - enjoy!! biggrin

I go through phases. Sometimes I can't listen to Prince. Sometimes I can't listen to anything but Prince!

I find that live recordings are quite tough, especially from the most recent shows I attended. sad

man had such a body of work and it means so much to me that i have to sometimes force myself to listen to some of my other musical heroes when I think i'm just focussing too much on his death. Grief wears you down, i believe the heavy period of grief after his death left me so worn out that I really didn't have much more emotion left when my other biggest hero, ali died.

I had a different problem. I found it very hard to see music played live and enjoy it. We had tickets for ELO about two weeks after Prince passed and allthough the show was fine I couldn't enjoy it and kept thinking that I would never see Prince play live again (we've seen him live 50+ times since 1987).

At the next show, same problem. This went on until last month, when I went to a show by ABC and noticed afterward that I hadn't thought of Prince all night.

good lord, i can't imagine having the finances available that it would take to see so many shows like many of the people on here have. i've only been to two. He's been in my area, maybe 6 or 7 times i think. The one i really missed was his show at a small club, it was announced with like a days notice and sold out, 250 tickets but so close to the man. It was 2012 and it was 3eg's first performance live.

Me too. Prince's death had the opposite effect on me. All I wanted to listen to was his music. Still do. I listen to other music but it's mainly Prince. There are a few songs that are difficult to hear but for the most part I can listen to all of his music. He lives on through the music.

Like when P did that Bowie song in Atlanta "We could be hero's" -- OMG, I could not listen to it without breaking down!! He sang it so beautifully. I miss him so much......we all do.

Thanks for sharing. Interesting to know how other's are dealing with the loss of Prince and how some could listen to his music right away, while others, like myself it took longer. There are some songs that are easier than others, like if I hear "Controversy" or another upbeat song, etc.....it's a little easier for me to handle.

It's so touching to hear all of y'all's stories and how Prince's music affected you when he passed, and up until today. It's starting to get a little better for me now, but some songs are still tough for me to listen to. Thanks again, everyone!! prince heart
