Prince may have had some issues with his height, but the more i think about this, i agree with you...why would Prince interject that into THAT conversation, at THAT moment?.... Beatty must have been either making a joke that got taken out of context, or he's a liar...i cant imagine Prince displaying any self deprecating behavior...joking or not...maybe around close female friends or family...but not no warren beatty....

Prince fulfills a lot of the criteria for an alpha male. You don't have to be six foot plus to be alpha male.
Baby, you're a star.

I'm only about 5'2", and I'm fine with my height. The only time I have trouble is when trying to reach up high for something in my kitchen or at the grocery store, but that's where my 6'6" tall husband comes in handy! LOL lol

.

Uh, Good God, I'm short and I'm Proud!! LOL woot!

[Edited 12/14/16 14:25pm]

I love my height as well, and God did not make a mistake when it came to Prince, in fact, I'm watching Purple Rain right now.

.

I also think, if anything, his lack of height helped his career.

Yes. Mayte even said that Prince didn't have an issue with his height.

Besides, I think 5'3" is not unusually short -- it's actually quite common. I wouldn't mind being a couple of inches taller myself, but I'm okay with being short. lol

Prince was a bit taller than me. 5'3", so it's all good!! lol

nod Yup, I work at the hospital and see people's actual height all the time. I especially take notice of the guys that are 5'3, and I'm always like hmmm "so this is the way Prince would look without his heels" It's pretty ordinary especially if you're around the same height. I could see how men would think he was small but us women were usually around his height anyway, and we were the ones that counted.. tease lol (just joking)

I do believe that Prince's lack of height bothered them. Come on, folks. Wearing high heels to be fashionable in the 1980's is one thing...wearing high heels, platform tennis shoes and boots for 40 something years is a whole other matter. He's human. A bit of a Napoleonic syndrome isn't necessarily a bad thing. He funneled it into stage swagger and a work effort. But it did have some bad results. Think about the discomfort of those heels and the weariness he had toward males at times. But I do think he often handled the lack of height with dignity and even humor and could take a joke about it as long as he was in on the joke. In other words, someone tall making fun of his height probably would NOT have been welcomed by Prince. Another short person doing it (like in that GQ article) would have probably been fine. Prince calling himself "little Princey" and joking about his lack of height was probably so that no one else (who was taller) would get an opportunity to see his lack of height as a weakness...

I am speculating that P had mixed feelings about his own height.

Of course Prince was conscious about his height. I have no doubt about it. Wearing heels 24/7 is a pretty good indicator of that, imo. If not, he would wear something else from time to time, don't you think?
He was short and that obviously must have made him feel self conscious. I know a couple of men that height (they are actually my daughter's friends, so they're in their 20s) and they even ask their girlfreinds to not wear heels when they go out with them. The Napolean xomplex is a thing. Plus, a lot of short man are very controlling towards women, for obvious reasons.

Prince made up for it being a hard working guy and having a great sense of humour. Of course he would joke about his height all the time, what better way to show people that it did not bother him at all? Just like how some bigger women/men will laugh about their weight. It works as a defense mechanism.

My dad is 5'5 and has always been conscious about his height even if he wouldn't ever admit it. Especially with regards to sports and the military. And the fact that my brother ended up being over 6ft tall. One way my dad compensated for it was to always one up people. He always was that little bit smarter, or knew a little bit more (even if he really didn't). I'd be very shocked to find any man not conscious of his height. No way is Prince wearing heels and wedges 24/7 if his height didn't bother him.

Wedges and platform flip-flops were not part of his "trademark" look. I saw him once on stage (in a picture) with regular shoes and his legs looks short compared to his torso. He may have used the high shoes to provide proportion to this frame..

There are multiple examples of Prince being self-deprecating.

During the Oprah interview on nationwide TV, talking about how he's grown since getting his freedom from WB. Prince's response "Nope, I'm pretty much the same size".

I'm sure his height was an issue for him, but on balance, he was also a multi-millionaire several hundred times over, world famous & one of the elite few considered to be the musicians musician. I'm sure by the time he'd slept with a few thousand of the most beautiful women in the world, he was able to joke about some of his insecurities, especially if the insecurity in question is a fear of not being found attractive by the opposite sex.

I guess we'll have to agree to disagree. We don't really know how he felt about it. I'm just going by what i've read thru the years. He wore heels all the time, even when not performing. even when he wore flip flops they where platform ones. Even playing basketball! He was picked on as a kid for being little, that kind of stuff stays with you on some kind of level, regardless of how much you've worked thru issues like that.

When I first met him I first saw him from behind and my friend and I were wondering who "that gorgeous little lady is". It was only when he turned around that it dawned on us that it was Prince. And it wasn't only the height but the way he moved and his cute little waist. We all know that he's short but nothing prepares u for the reality. That tiny frame. While he was giving us smiles and eyes my friend and I couldn't help but exchange looks that said, "He's SO tiny! - I know. - But he's CUTE." And from the way P looked at us I knew that he knew exactly what we were thinking.

He was very conscious of his height. Another friend once asked him what he wanted to be when he was little. He was a really good sport about it by joking, We don't use the L-word around here. But I always knew that it wasn't easy for him being short. It was one of the reasons why I could never take him serious - until I fell for him. His aura and his way with u was everything. And the music... his voice... I still call him my baby brother but because of my feelings for him, not because he was short.

I didn't take the quote as someone who was "tormented", I think that's a little bit much but I'm sure he had issues with his height. I'm fun sized myself and I have always wished I was taller even though I'm a woman. I don't know if Prince would have physically appealed to me with the makeup and clothes and stuff if he was 6'3" or something. That little package enhanced his image in my opinion.

You know, I have never thought about that, you are so right, if he was taller and wearing those clothes it would have looked totally weird? It was his petite-ness that made it all work the way it did. And I never thought about his head being big - I wish someone didnt say that as I had not really thought about that eek
