"PRINCE ESTATE DIDN'T GIVE PERMISSION TO TIDAL..." http://www.metro.us/entertainment/prince-s-estate-turns-down-jay-z-s-offer-for-unreleased-music/zsJpkm---BVoKpep4kSi3M/
After legendary singer Prince was found dead in his home from an accidental drug overdose earlier this year, rapper and businessman Jay-Z made a move to purchase the late singer’s unreleased music. TMZ reported that Jay sat down with Prince’s sister and offered around $40 million for the cherished catalog. Apparently Prince’s estate has made a decision: No deal. TMZ has confirmed that the estate sent a letter to Jay-Z’s camp saying that they actually aren’t down to let "Roc Nation to exploit any of the intellectual property assets of the Estate." Yikes. They’re also claiming that Tidal, part-owned by Jay, was not authorized to make 15 of Prince’s albums available for streaming shortly after his death.

HerecomethePurpleYoda said: Never, never trust the media. If Jay-z has a contract and can show he paid what he was contractually obligated to pay he should be fine. The problem comes if he did business with Prince on a handshake. Although handshake or no handshake he should still be able to show he paid for the music. [Edited 11/13/16 13:48pm]

. But weren't some of the albums available in better quality than ever before (thinking Chocolate Invasion, etc.) . How did TIDAL make these available if they hadn't been provided by the Prince camp? .

I honestly got the impression that Prince had planned to do that anyway, how else would they have had access to the content? Unless Prince or someone else in his circle gave it to them. But like somebody said don't trust the media esp not TMZ...

I'd rather not do any business with Tidal anyway. I hated the way Beyoncé handled his tribute and roll out of her album around his passing. I hope they are not involved with his work for much longer! [Edited 11/13/16 16:51pm]

All I know is, if PRINCE music gets taken off Tidal I'm cancelling my subscription because all I ever listened to on Tidal is Prince. I asked Prince what he was planning to do. He told me , I'm going to look for the ladder. I asked him what that meant. All he said was, sometimes it snows in April. - book D.M.S.R.

It's highly unlikely Tidal would've even known that some of those rarities even existed. The Rave In2 album for example, was mail order only.

I do not understand your thoughts on Tyka sitting down with Jay to negotiate about the unreleased music in the vault. The released and unreleased music belongs to the LLC that Prince set up January 2014 with Management of the LLC selected and is in place still today. Prince was the single shareholder in the LLC. Unless Tyka was a shareholder (and that has already been determined as NO)or a beneficiary and even then she could not negotiate anything without management involved. All Tyka would be entitled to as a beneficiary would be a stream of income allocated by her size of share if other beneficiaries are included.(charities etc)Prince may not have made any family beneficiaries and instead set up the LLC to provide a 120 year (copyright) stream of income for his projects such as music programmes for schools and charities he started. The estate belongs to the family and is in court and will eventually attract state death taxes on the gross value because Prince left no known will. The LLC stands alone and attracts no state taxes at all and did not require a will. It was set up to run as Prince wanted and support who Prince wanted with income from the sales of his music and films. That was a major reason Prince fought for ownership of his Masters, so he could generate income for 120 years through the LLC. Prince, alive or dead, the LLC will go on and that is the beauty of the business decision Prince made to protect his lifes work. [Edited 11/14/16 1:02am]

Despite what the Estate may or may not be saying, Prince was clearly working happily with Tidal right up until his passing. Even on the Monday before his death he gave Tidal 'Black Sweat' from Atlanta as the Purple Pick.
Right now, I'd trust Tidal more than the Estate, since Prince actually chose Tidal for a working relationship. The Estate however, is a different story...

I don't trust the media either, however TMZ has been relatively accurate and they do back check before they air a story. I do not trust Jay Z. I am on the side of the estate and the chump change he offered for Prince's catalogue was highly insulting.

I know people here and elsehwere online have their own feelings about JayZ, but it's super telling that of all the players Prince couldve chose to get down with, he chose Jay/Tidal. Clearly this is where he wanted at least part of his business to live. "Where you are now is in a place that does not require time." - Rest In Power, PRINCE

On November 7, 2016 Roc Nation filed a Statement of Unsecured Claim against the Estate. The statement indicates it is based upon "...contract for services and distribution of intellectual property as modified by subsequent writings, course of dealing between the parties, and oral understandings and agreements..." It appears there is a dispute between Roc Nation and the Estate as to what the oral agreement was between Prince and JayZ.

I agree with this, to a fault. I was none too pleased to start a subscription with Tidal JUST so I could have access to Prince. My whole thing was, "Fuck Jay-Z and how much of a corporate sell-out he's become". I already had a Spotify premium subscription while P's stuff was still on there at the time, and something about Tidal really rubbed me the wrong way. But because of my Prince fandom, I made a decision to get Tidal, and for a while, I really disliked having it. I felt the extra 5 bucks a month was a rip-off. But then I stumbled upon a web page comparing the sound qualities of Spotify and Tidal, and Tidal's sound (for the premium subscription, not the $24.95 hi-fi one) is better by a country mile. If sound quality is something you care at all about, Tidal wins. To my ears, Spotify's quality seems far too compressed to me, whereas with Tidal the music breathes. Tidal also has a lot of cool extras like music videos, and live shows. Give it a chance, I feel it's very much worth it. Get in your mouse, and get out of here!

I quickly went to Tidal to buy Exodus and felt like they'd be removed soon a few weeks ago. . Didn't check again to do so until today. Alas, I was too late. . Dammit! That teaches *me* to be poor and not able to buy everything all at once! Haha . Hope the estate makes all these albums available directly soon. I want to support them!
