Tyka's speech was absolutely beautiful; it had me in tears!! She held-up pretty well, until the end. What she said here really touched me: "In the words of Prince, βWith love, honor, and respect for every living thing in the universe, separation ceases, and we all become one being, singing one song.β . I was like, here we go again!! It got me so emotional!! . Well-done, Tyka!!

. Yea, I know. All the award shows just won't be the same anymore without Prince up on stage.

There is a lot of difference of opinion regarding Apollonia and The Revolution not being chosen to accept the award for Purple Rain, in honor of Prince. I think Apollonia & The Revolution should have been given an invitation -- I think they should have been invited, and at least asked to go up on stage to support Tyka. . I think in this particular case, with the recent passing of Prince, it was only appropriate to have a family member accept this award. . It was the "right" thing to do, imo. .

. Mumio: I agree. And like I said, having Tyka accept the award on Prince's behalf was the right thing to do. It would have been nice if Apollonia & The Revolution were there, but what can you do? . Prince passed away, so having his Sister accept the award was absolutely the right thing to do. I'm shocked that some people have an issue with that, but oh well....

The audience for this show probably doesn't even know who the Revolution was. They certainly weren't going to perform. But the audience would know Prince so have his sister accept the award and be done wit it. Tyka could have mentioned the band but I'll cut her some slack as public speaking is not her thing and she was clearly emotional at the end. Paisley Park is in your heart

Noodled24 said: ^ That's not really the point. It's the people on the record that are being awarded. Without them there may not have been a Purple Rain. I'm not sure what Tyka contributed to the album... other than having a famous sibling. Tyka collected it on behalf of Prince. You're missing the point.Purple Rain is a Prince and the Revolution album but the most prominent person on that album is Prince and that's who she represented. The Revolution would have have collected it for themselves, but who would have stood in for Prince? Baby, you're a star.

Prince won for "Top Soundtrack" for Purple Rain, not for the movie itself. Just wanted to add that.

To think that Prince was at the AMAs just last year, and now he's gone; just makes me so incredibly sad. . .

HerecomethePurpleYoda said: "Prince defied the odds. A black teen from Minneapolis with a goal to electrify the world. He had the courage to be different. With his vision, and God-given talent, he is STILL one of the world's most respected and loved artists. What he told me, was that he wanted to be known as the world's most prolific songwriter. And with 984 titles to his credit and counting, he has done just that. In the words of Prince, 'With love, honor, and respect for every living thing in the universe, separation ceases. And we all become one being, singing one song.' On behalf of Prince, our wonderful friend, teacher and brother - I humbly accept this award. And me, my brother Omar, my brother Alfred, my sister Sharon, my sister Noreen, and my brother John, we'll keep this for you at Paisley Park. Until we see you again, this is for you." π

To please everyone maybe they could have had them all accept the award, with tyka standing in on Prince's behalf. It wouldn't be the first time there was a crowd of ppl accepting an award. Either way his sister had privilege to be there on her brothers behalf. Imo πβ -Love Me

. No. Still haven't figured that one out, yet. Prince didn't perform last year, so maybe he just felt like having his guitar with him that night as an accessory?

The only reason the album was nominated and won was because Prince died, not because of anything The Revolution or Apollonia (puh-lease) did. It was only appropriate in these circumstances that Prince's next-of-kin accept the award.

It was the AMAs - a fluff show. Prince was probably the only person in the room who could play the guitar. That was the point he was making.

. Yes, Prince died, thus Purple Rain sales soared. . But, you seem to suggest that the soundtrack's success had nothing to do with The Revolution, and I have to disagree, if that is what you are saying. They were Prince's band members during Purple Rain era. . Tyka accepted the award, and it was beautiful. Let's not pick apart Apollonia or The Revolution; they don't deserve that.

. . Rogifan was was asking if any of us knew why he was wearing a guitar that night. This topic has come up before here. Like I said, I think Prince just felt like wearing a guitar that night (my response to Rogifan). . We all know that award shows are "fluff".

The album won a bunch of AMAs the first time around in 1985, and The Revolution accepted then. That was appropriate. This year is about Prince.
