Rough is pretty good guys, it's not much of a song but it's a cool listen. It's interesting to hear him working away at things like that, like listening to a songwriter do the equivalent of a concert pianest playing scales.

Most of us love and respect Jill. But I've listened over and over and over again on high-quality gear, and I do not hear anyone but Prince on the demo.

.

I think the interest and questioning about who the 'female' background vocalist (almost certainly only Prince in falsetto) has been caused by the phasing downshift by the leakers, which has inadvertently made that part really stand out.

.

By 1983, P had already promised Jill for several years that he would put together an album for her.

.

I view her statement (quoted below) as a lament that P, who (obviously) already had an established emotional and on-and-off romantic relationship with Jill, rushed to assemble an album and gave this to a newcomer (if that is the appropriate term, since it has been said that P first met Sheila as early as 1978), with the added sting that this song ended up being a Top 10 as the result of the PR phenomenon (and Jills' eventual album became only a very modest success in Europe).

.

It's a tremendous pop song, but I'm not certain that it would be as well known without WB's 1984 marketing machine behind it, and the particular cultural plateau of that very moment in time, and Jill probably would not have got an album that year even if he did let her have some of the better commercial tracks from this time. By holding out, and being very solicitous to Jill once her album finally got its chance, and contrastingly by quickly putting together an album for Sheila here, this had the 'perverse effect' (from Jill's POV, anyhow) of Sheila getting hot-off-the-presses material from and during the most successful period of Prince's career.

.

Although she hung around the Purple camp at the time (and was in a position to observe some of it comings and goings), we cannot be certain she would have even been aware of this one track *specifically* prior to its release. The song was originally written about Apollonia, and slated for the A6 album (hypothetically to be sung by A).

.

To balance things out, for fairness' sake,

.

Jill appears on 'Ooo She She Wa Wa', helping to fill Susan's relatively weak vocal (the same kind of production trick Paula Abdul used on 'Forever Her Girl' album); this was also a late entry to the album ('Blue Limousine', the last entry for the album had Susannah Melvoin 'imitating' Susan for the backing).

.

And she does also appear on 'The Belle of Saint Mark', and allegedly (*unconfirmed* at this point) the A6 take of 'Manic Monday'. Jill does not appear on any other V6 or A6 or related material ('17 Days', 'Take Me with U', 'Oliver's House', 'Next Time Wipe the Lipstick Off Your Collar'). She most likely did base her vocal on 'G-Spot' after Vanity's (rather than P's), however, and a number of other songs considered for her first album and aborted second album were culled from Vanity 6 outtakes. The very first new song laid down specificially for her album, 'My Man', seems to borrow the A6-style bubblegum synthpop record approach.

-----------------

It has the salaciousness of 'what could have been' and a hint of betrayal/conspiracy, so I'm certain some will continue to insist that it's Jill, but on this particular demo, I simply don't hear her, and her voice is distinctly recognizable to me (even though she was often tasked with camouflaging/enhancing/standing in for other billed performers).

.

If you closely follow along with the softer parts that sound momentarily like they could be a female vocalist, as the line continues you'll hear Prince's unmistakable vocal inflexions.

.

I don't understand the desire for grown people to indulge fictionalized Purple soap opera.

.

it is most likely Jill Jones singing behind Prince on this one

"...(Prince) could have given me "The Glamorous Life". Sheila E. would come to the studio to play basketball and I did not know that the child was going in (to the studio) late at night and singing the songs...:"

-Jill Jones

.

[Edited 9/23/16 9:31am]

I haven't taken the time to pay attention to who may or may not be singing background vocals on the leaked version of TGL, but I don't think that's material to Jill's comments.

Knowing her lament reasonably well, Jill was complaining that Prince could have written a major hit for her, if he had devoted the time and attention to do so.

Her comment about Sheila is not based on some claim that she (JJ) had been around longer, but that she knew that Prince had a relationship with Sheila but never understood it to include producing music on her behalf.

You know when I saw that that song was played at his memorial service, I had a very inappropriate thought (considering the occasion):
They wouldn't play an audience recording of a song, would they? Did someone provide a soundboard for the memorial service? And where can I hear this recording? I know, completely selfish greedy and not appropriate.
However, weeks later, voila. The show surfaces in soundboard quality.

Maybe they played one of the dozen or so covers of this very old song? Or did you hear for certain that they payed a Prince version of it?

Yes, it sounds like it is the same one. How long have you had it for then? The one I am listening to was only posted a few days ago. Probably not the quickest source though.

They're all interesting to hear, even though none of them sound 100% complete.

Come Elektra Tuesday and Roadhouse Garden are probably the 2 best out of this bunch. CET sounds like an awesome B-side, and Roadhouse Garden more of an album track. The Glamorous Life is great to hear with Prince-only vocals but doesn't sound polished enough to be released that way. Rough is OK too as a demo. Eggplant is a complete waste of time - just Prince having some fun in the studio.

If you notice a lot of his demos are basically variations of Linn beats with somewhat casual (not lazy, but not energetic either) vocals. A lot of them do have that "one-man-band" feel to them, and feel like maybe he recorded a lot of them very quickly.

These are like digital "sketches", or in writing terms they're like an outline. Something to capture the idea in the moment and come back to embellish and build upon later. So the question is, are the "built-upon" versions -- finished -- in the Vault too?

i think he took a lot of later ideas from some of these sketches. so in a lot of cases i think he didn't
finish these songs up or work them out into full, polished songs, but rather picked them apart for
inidividual bits and pieces to add to other songs, or to build completely new songs around. a song
like "come elektra tuesday" in particular has so many bits and pieces that ended up in later work.

.

The answer is most assuredly no to both questions.

.

The recently leaked version of 'Roadhouse Garden' is further along then anything else we've previously heard, but is clearly some distance from being a polished, completed studio track. Therefore, unlikely to have been sourced from any aborted but sequenced album.

.

There is no vintage 'Roadhouse Garden' LP, and the 1998-era 'Roadhouse Garden' project would have been a pseudo-album of material recorded during and after Parade, but before the dissolution of the Revolution in October 1986, including earlier tracks revisited and overdubbed during this era. With late-1990s-era prince production sensibilities layered on some of the more spartan of the tracks (and also influencing the editing and mixing choices). And with many common outtake tracks that we already have in reasonable quality.

.

While there may have been some work (completed entirely by P and his engineers) on certain tracks (e.g., 'Splash'), it didn't mature into a fully realized project, allegedly due in part to P's unwillingness to pay for W&L's accommodation while staying to work in the studio on overdubs, although by this time he was already sending/receiving tapes (or their digital equivalent) through the mail/Internet for outside input, so that explanation is a bit infirm.

.

I strongly believe the 1998 RH project was merely a momentary spark that helped to stir up press interest in a return of 'vintage Prince' prior to what became RU2TJF (with the 1999 'New Master' thrown in there as well). P's heavily conflicted relationship with the Internet would have been an impediment to seeing this material released through the NPG Music Club (another possible release channel), for that matter, as well.

.

Is this new version of Strange Relationship different than the "Original" aka "the song that Trent Reznor absolutely got the idea for "Closer" to"? I haven't been able to find it.

So much for that article that suggested that not much will leak from the vault because we already have the good stuff that's unreleased. May not be earth-shattering, but I'm quite enjoying the "new" tracks. 9 to 5 people, in particular.

Does this mean that we're finally get our mitts on Prince's version of The Family album? I know there are some rough versions already, but I've been scouring the edges of the internet trying to find P's version of "Screams of Passion" that ?uestlove teased. It sounded like it was exactly like the original but with Prince on vocals instead of the dude with the fancy scarf in that awesomely awful music video.

Speaking of that specific track, can anyone verify that it's "out there"? I have never had such a hard time finding a track that was known to be in existence somewhere. I know we can't solicite, but if anyone can verify if I'm on a fool's errand. A kind point in the right direction would be sufficient, I enjoy the hunt.

I apologize for rambling, lost my old email from the account I've had on here for years, so I had to create a new one, and wait forever to yap about this news. We remember where we are during impactful moments in our lives. I'll never forget where I was when I heard. I deliver Home Medical Equipment, had just pulled up to a patient's house, the wife, not much of a fan texts me "Prince is dead, I'm sorry babe." I had to sit in my truck for about ten minutes, to get ahold of myself. His career has been like a lifelong friend. .

There is no previously unheard version of 'Strange Relationship' among these recent leaks.

.

To date, we have the SOTT album version (which is said to be identical to what appeared on the aborted Camille album; it is documented that Eric Leeds recorded horns parts that went unused in the final mix), a mid-1985 outtake version (updated from the 1982 'original' piano and drums-driven tune, by Wendy and Lisa alone in the studio, with most of the instrumental changes being Fairlight overdubs) of which the SOTT version is a further update, a 1985 soundcheck jam/rehearsal of the song (from the final date of the PR tour), a 1984 loose jam/rehearsal at the end of 'Billy', and a brief 1983 interpretation during a piano rehearsal/jam.

.

Some casual posters are poking their heads in this thread to relate their first listening experiences with commonly available outtakes that have circulated for many years.

.

Others, most even, are discussing the more recent leaks, the main subject matter of this thread.

.

P's 'Screams of Passion' is not yet circulating outside of snippets, taken at a club by way of a mobile phone video recording, of excerpts of it in a DJ mix Questlove put together. There is not yet a widely circulating direct-from-source recording. It lacks Clare Fischer overdubs, but has Prince on all vocals (main and backing, both sung mostly in falsetto; P's vocals are completely absent from the mix on 'The Family' released version), and is apparently in every other way identical. I have heard it, and obviously, the snippets are sufficient proof that this version is 'out there' (circulating among the well connected).

Thank you for clearing that up. I'm a moron. It's "Strange Way (of saying I love you)" that's leaked out. I'm gonna get on that. Only version I have is super rough. These new recent leaks are super awesome. I'm really digging 9 to 5 people. "Rough", "Roadhouse Garden" and the others I haven't played a lot, but I'm digging them.

And THANK THANK THANK you for clearing up the Prince "Family" demo rumors. It's out there, but only among well-connected folks. So I will back off my intense hunt.

You've heard the entire Screams of Passion with Prince's vocal??? Does it blow St Paul's vocal away, like I'm imagining??? eek

Seeing how the Estate can't be trusted with their total balls up of not getting the Paisley Park museum properly cleared by the local council , I think all the people who have previously unheard outtakes should leak them as a protest. wink
