so, the first line is from another outtake 'we got the power', so that might help date it.
"we got the power" is from late 88 isn't it?

Good call. It just seems so straightforward for 88.

Good call. It just seems so straightforward for 88.

Think about tunes written in or around 88 though. They were all pretty straightforward. The Batman stuff, Rave, If I Had A Harem, People Without..... all pretty basic.

Not sure I agree. The Future and People Without are not basic. Both rather out of left field imo.

I get that stuff from this era has a certain sound to it, but basic? Hardly.

When I think of 88, I think of Lovesexy, but I guess he did do plenty of straightforward stuff that year as well.

How is it complex then? Maybe we just have different ways of describing things. There's nothing musically complex about The Future.... it has pretty much the same beat throughout the song with some synth flourishes on top. Very little melody, monotone lyrics. People Without.... improvised lyrics, basic funk/blues groove. Rave.... basic electronic drum pattern, sparse production, synth flourishes/stabs. If I Had A Harem.... a basic blues song (live), and even more basic song studio.

I mean after Lovesexy. Most of Lovesexy was written prior to 88.

but 1988 is also:

Big House
We Got The Power
Curious Blue
Fuchsia Light
Sticky Wicked
God Is Alive
The Max

Cookie Jar
Cool Love
101

i mean, it's not like the album from a certain era totally defines what prince recorded
at such a time. the man was way too diverse for that. sessions roughly shared a kind
of overall sound, but beyond that he must have always just recorded what he heard
in his head, whatever flowed from him in the studio and what inspired him. and that
would not have bent to a certain album in progress aesthetic per se.

9 to 5 People is amazing!

I'm shocked that there is so little information known about this track!

Just had a listen now, and yeah this is brilliant, it's crazy that a track which I don't think I've ever even heard of before can just appear out of nowhere and blow you away like that, makes me hopeful that there's still a lot of brilliant stuff in the vault which is still waiting to be discovered by the fans.

I think of it in 2 mindsets. THe first, being the lighter material like Lovesaxy or Cool Love and the second being the darker stuff like what was intended for Rave Un2.

It creative and new. Your argument is a bit like calling minimalist art basic.

Minimalist art is basic by it's very nature. The miscommunication seems to be that by me calling it basic what I mean is "bad".... but that's not what I mean. Punk, for example, is basic. Basic drums, basic chords.... but punk is some of the most powerful music ever created.

I misunderstood. I thought it was a judgement on the quality of the work.

Absolutely not. I'm loving this new track. His voice, the guitar tone, the drums (it sounds like he's playing. Some of the fills remind me of Tambourine).... but complex it is not (IMHO).

Naaahh. Not diggin' 9 to 5 People at all. Too dark for my taste, but in the same vein as Rebirth Of The Flesh (a song which I adore on the other hand.)

I feel like a lot of his seemingly minimalist work is actually deceptively simple. The Future doesn't sound like much, but I think if you try to re-create it you might have trouble making it sound the way Prince does. The way he punches in the bass and guitar fills, and the string swells.

I remember an interview from the not too distant past, where he talks about the art of punching in various sounds and licks on a dime, and likened it to being able to play another instrument.

I agree. I've always felt that Prince's true genius was his ability to make simple songs that sounded anything but, through his innovative drum programming and not only his use of synths but how and where he used them.

This rocks! Unusual soundscape for Prince.

Anybody have any info on what project(s) this may have been considered for?
It sounds like it would be right up 3rd Eye Girl's alley.

yes it reminds me a bit of the 3EG stuff. I really like this track smile
