It's an odd release. The material is of a high standard, but Prince did his best to sabotage the commercial success of the album. The title track once destined to be an dance anthem became a smooth jazz ode to oral sex. VH1 took a part of "Pheromone" as their theme? "Loose" had dance hit written all over it if 90% of the lyrics weren't there. The acoustic version of "Space" is beautiful. So is the "Universal Love Mix"...

Almost everything on the album was either too dark lyrically or far too sexually explicit to be played on the radio. - This was everything people thought of the "Prince" character; dark & explicit. In that sense it's a perfect "Prince" album. The material was good... but delivered in a way so as to make it virtually unsaleable because fuck warner brothers was his mantra at the time.

He wanted TGE released at practically the same time as "Come"... Hence holding back TMBGITW and making TGE a far FAR more commercial album.

I'm just surprised that many people would remember it.

Yet TGE wasn't commercial at all.

Yes it had some singles that cracked the top 20, but...

The album tanked at the BillBoard charts barely selling 500,000 copies, also the tour was a financial failure.

Top 50 all-time worst seems a bit extreme... but "Come" IS a pretty sucky album by Prince standards.

13. Eminem - Recovery (2010)

That is the one Eminem album I admit I do not listen to despite the good reviews etc, I felt like he sold out or just got really mechanical with the features trying to get a hit. Relapse IMO was far more entertaining and went back to his horrorcore days.

15. Britney Spears - Oops!... I did it Again (2000)

This wasnt that bad either, actually better than the first album. When your Eyes Say It (a very underrated Diane Warren track), Dont Go Knocking on My Door, I Cant Get No Satisfaction, Lucky and Stronger were good.

17. Puff Daddy - Forever (2005)

Chile there was some ok songs on it like Real Niggaz, and Satisfy You PE 2000, as a whole it was cheesy yeah

21. Madonna - MDNA (2015)

It was better than American Life IMO but was very cheesy in many areas. Too much songs sounded like Music outtakes and cheeseball mistakes. Rebel Heart was a much better effort.

32. Prince - Come (1994)

Not easily accessible no. He was in a fuck off mood on that album and I do understand because it took me ten years to actually just accept this album, thank goodness Gold Experience made me forget about them days.

When I said TGE is more commercial I ment in terms of being more instantly accessible. Especially compared to "Come".

I couldn't speak as to the tours, although I remember reading that as the tour went on, parts of the elaborate set were left behind. Regardless many of the shows from around this time were among my favorites, the setlists were awesome.

I don't know why you are wasting time posting when you should be off brushing your teeth while listening to Come.

Totes just havin' fun, Matty razz. On the real, I love Come and would have loved to hear a double album of this sound. Pretty hot, somehow underrated Prince album.

I love Come too. Weirdly enough, it's Prince's only number 1 album in the UK, which makes its inclusion on this list even more bizarre.

Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that it has a song called Orgasm which is three minutes of exactly what you think it will be. And the title track features sound effects of him licking out a woman, which sounds more like he's sucking on a juicy orange.

Forgive me if someone else on this thread has already corrected you (I quickly looked through and couldn't find anyone), but 'Come' was far from Prince's only #1 album here in the U.K. Indeed, Come was actually Prince's 5th U.K number one album in just six years.

1988 Lovesexy #1

1989 Batman #1

1990 Graffiti Bridge #1

1992 Love Symbol #1

1994 Come #1

Ironically, easily the most commercially succesful Prince album in the U.K during this period, 'Diamonds & Pearls', which went triple platinum over here (the most any of those number one albums went was sinlge platinum) only made #2 on the album charts.

Come was however Prince's last number one album in the U.K, and as a fan who bought all of those albums at the time, I always felt Come was the album that killed Prince a little commercially here. There were still just enough Prince fans in the U.K to make all his albums hit number 1 or 2 in the early 90's, which is why Come raced straight to #1. But the album had no legs and quickly tumbled down the charts and wasn't bought by many casual fans. In just three years since D&P went triple platinum and sold almost 1 Million copies here, Come struggled to earn a gold disc, and fell way short of reaching the 300,000 sales needed for platinum status.

I've always seen Come as the line drawn in the sand where the last of the casual 80's fans checked out, leaving mostly the hardcore going forward. I am talking the album buying public here. Prince did of course hit #1 for the only time as a singles artist in '94, but even that huge success wasn't enough to propel the excellent Gold Experience in to the top three, and it too fell short of platinum. That despite the #1 single and two other top 20 singles here. For Prince, the album market kind of abandoned him here for several years following Come, and the singles market followed a couple of years later.

Come was just too dark, explicit and wasn't in any way radio friendly (no big hits), and when you start putting out albums like that, you eventually end up with only your hardcore fans still buying your albums. No surprise here that it was mentioned in this sh*t for brains list, because it's an album that mostly only Prince's hardcore fans gave a 2nd listen.

P.S My dental hygiene is excellent biggrin

I would argue "New Power Soul" is a more coherent album than "Come."

.

"Come" marked a real turning point in the arc of Prince's career - and it wasn't a good one. It may not be his worst (see "Musicology") but it marked an abrupt end to his unerring ability to craft a truly cohesive album.

Perhaps, but TGE contains some career highlights. He's still rude as ever but it's far more playful on TGE than on "Come". IMO he very deliberately made "Come" as un-radio-friendly as he could.

The release of the album was just so fucked up and Prince was at the height of his spat with WB. TGE was clearly the album he favored. This is pretty much the timeline of events:

Feb/March/May '94 TMBGITW was released. No album is available. Just the EP.

April '94 Prince goes on soultrain performs 2 songs from TGE & 2 Unreleased songs

May '94 Prince goes on French TV "Endorphinmachine"

July '94 "Lovesign" on the Today show.

August '94 "Come" was released - Doesn't feature TMBGITW. (Or any songs he'd promoted)

Aug/Sept '94 "Letitgo" single is release - Shit video, no TV spots. + 1800NEWFUNK is released.

November '94 "Space" single is released, No video?, no tv spots. + The Black Album is released

December '94 "Dolphin" on Letterman.

March '95 The Purple Medley.

March/April '95 "Exodus" is released + 2 TV spots promoting "Exodus"

August '95 "The Good Life" is released as a single.

September '95 "The Gold Experience" is released + "I hate u" single

November '95 "Gold" single

I agree. But by the time WB released it, he'd moved on to promoting "Exodus". He spent pretty much all of 1994 promoting TGE, and it wasn't released until late '95.

"Come" is a great album. Many of the songs have a number of remixes, alternate mixs, "Space" has an acoustic mix. A lot of them were played live regularly. "Dark/So Dark" still popped up in his setlists.

I don't know. I like "Exodus"... a lot. It's short and the skits are annoying more than they're amusing but it's a great album. I don't think it was just thrown together. I don't think he even expected it to be wildly successful.

"The Good Life" single hit the top 20 in the UK. Bootlegs like "Emporium" and "Paradiso '95" - the audience were lapping it up. The latter audience bursts into a spontanious chant of "Fuck Warner Bros" - I can totally see why Prince thought "the people" were on his side.

Prince has always moved on pretty quick. It's not out of character. Given he'd spent '94 promoting TGE which wasn't released till the end of '95... Although you're absolutely right that his setlists at the time still included a lot of TGE material so it's not like he washed his hands of it completely.

You could say that about any album with an alternate tracklist... I wouldn't say D&P was thrown together yet the released album has little in common with the alternate tracklist. Suggesting the entire project was re-worked to be better.

I mean in some respect, it was always a vehicle for SonnyT. Given he's heavily featured on both versions of the albums.

The stronger* songs survived Get Wild - Count the days - H-Rain. Plus other stronger songs were added Good life/bumpsquad/bigfun/exodus. Plus the release album had a P-Funk sound to it rather than being an album where Sonny T sings Prince songs.

*songs like "Love thy will be done"/"Mad"/"Funky Design" are great too. But not the SonnyT versions.
