You really should check out some of the films he was in though. I think everyone should see Pulp Fiction at least once in his or her life. I've seen it so many times I got entire parts memorized. But then again, I'm a Quentin Tarantino fan...

These surveys are just nonsense. To make a true assessment of the "worst albums of all time" the people surveyed would have to listen to all albums of all time shrug which is clearly not possible lol. These articles only appeal to people with only 2 brain cells in their heads:roll:.

it's a Daily Mail article promoting a "sell your junk" service. it goes no deeper than that

Don't know what you mean by "sell your junk" but the DM is defintely a piece of junk!

The pattern here is albums that were released when artists had some momentum, where quite a few casual fans bought them and got disappointed. Some are more famous than listened to or bought for that matter such as metal machine music. Come is one of Prince's best 90's albums and is fighting for a top ten spot of all time for his albums personally. The album being a UK number one and the fact it has orgasm (and I am guessing Solo) it fits my model of people buying it because of good Prince concerts etc and finding it not for them, thus the sting remaining.

On a personal note, as a longtime non-fan of greenday, I am glad that American Idiot was in this result. I always felt that this album was junk like the rest of the band and their discography. This is purely subjective of me though.

At least take a look at the video for the cover of the Staples' "Respect Yourself." With June Pointer on a verse (and her sisters on backing vocals). And some seriously bad acting from Bruno's boss.

And apparently this got to number 5 here in the U.S. Hmmm... well, I can't really explain that. Mistakes were made.

Yes it's all opinion, but I would be perfectly fine seeing TGE on the list. It was dated and corny when it was released, and is unlistenable to listen today other than for very brief clips shaking your head and cringing.
If be perfectly fine if TGE was on this list. I would co-sign it and put it way at the top of the list.

Bingo. It's got too many cliches on the list in an order that feels inorganic. I don't think anyone thought to vote for "The Best of Rick Astley." Also, two Justin Bieber albums right under each other and Purpose is an album that most people demonstratably really like.

That's how a list like this works--there's the artists tons of people hate (or like to claim to) like Britney, then there's the "classic artists" that very few people really follow but who are generally held to be great by critics, but they're represented by the obvious worst album (Metal Machine Music is a standard to show up on a list like this). Come probably doesn't belong here, even if you want to include the "worst" of Prince's work--but it is credited to Prince, happened after the name change (during a period when most people thought he had jumped the shark), and, honestly, doesn't have even a "hit" type song on it. Really, eleven minutes, a few of which are dedicated to slurping and licking sounds? To start off the album? Snippets of "Song of Songs"? An ending like "Orgasm"?

Yeah, to someone who hasn't built up either an appreciation or a tolerance (however you feel about this sort of thing) to Prince's work as a whole, this album is a bit much to take.

I like it quite a bit, but when you're looking for an album to show an artist as "self-indulgent" or the like, especially coupled with the name-change, I can see where it might be the one they chose for the list. And Prince is too important to ignore (but not seen as uncriticizable, so he doesn't get a pass).

Oh God, people, please, for crying out loud! Come was an album that came out when everybody was confused about the whole Prince/TAFKAP thing. He had just released his biggest hit in years, The Most Beautiful Girl in the World, as prince and then all of a sudden, there was a "Prince" album without that hit, but full of songs that had been out there on bootleg already for a while. And then on the "Prince" album, prince had reworked them to give them a totally different sound. How confusing was that?? Prince/TAFKAP really did everything he could back then to ruin his carreer. He didn't even want to make an album called Come. He just wanted to give WB some throwaway songs to get one album closer to losing that damn contract. Which is to say, if you like Come, that's okay, but it's not a great Prince album by any standard. It's a contractual obligation album. Nothing more, nothing less.

Nonsense. Warners got to choose what was on it and whether they felt it was good enough to release. This is all not just common sense but well documented.

And proves once again that Warners had a better finger on music quality than Prince at the time. And we will also soon get to hear that Warners knew Prince was so erratic at the time because they knew about his drug problems. They knew damn well.

Chaos was also an "obligation" album and, to me, that situation has absolutely nothing to do with the quality of the music. Both great albums, imo.

Completely agree! I feel like they're deliberately courting controversy. The outrage is going to generate traffic, as well as a very active comment section. The amount of traffic will enable them to charge advertisers more money.

Because of that, I refuse to even look up the article. Instead, I say to them - hmph! talk to the hand

i don't believe in these contractual obligation/for private use only albums being just cast off
projects that prince put no effort into.

a case could possibly be made for "the vault...old friends 4 sale" since it seems to be really
just a collection of tracks from other projects (however, still pretty much cohesive in these
versions and in this sequence).

but all the songs from "come" originate from the same sessions as "the gold experience" and
some of them swapped between those two albums quite a bit. which is why it surprised me a
bit everytime i see people who like "the gold experience" a lot, say "come" is just filler.

come even had a test pressing with a different tracklist. so it was tinkered with up until the
very last stages before release. doesn't seem like prince would do that with a collection of
outtakes and stuff he considered as simply a bag of songs to fill out his contract.

also, "space" and "letitgo" had really great maxi singles with good remixes and extended cuts
of the songs. we know that a maxi single for "come" was also planned and that the song has
at least 3 great alternate versions.

a good chunk of these songs were also performed live a LOT of times, together with material
from "the gold experience", which somehow always gets a pass as being a well thought out
album with some of the best songs from the 90s.

chaos & disorder also had it's own recording sessions, specifically for it, so it's not like prince
just went into the vault, pulled out a shoebox of surplus tracks and said "fuck it, this will do"

smile

"originally recorded 4 private use only" is just a bit of fluff to me. it just means that prince
didn't want to promote this material anymore than he had to. he wanted out of his contract
and wanted WB to release these albums quicky, so he could go ihs own way. what does that
line even mean? and why is it always explained as a negative thing?

i'm sure that about 50% of his vault material has been recorded "4 private use only" or to
simply file away for future reference. does that mean it's all substandard or that prince did
not care about it too much? i hardly think so.

It's an odd release. The material is of a high standard, but Prince did his best to sabotage the commercial success of the album. The title track once destined to be an dance anthem became a smooth jazz ode to oral sex. VH1 took a part of "Pheromone" as their theme? "Loose" had dance hit written all over it if 90% of the lyrics weren't there. The acoustic version of "Space" is beautiful. So is the "Universal Love Mix"...

Almost everything on the album was either too dark lyrically or far too sexually explicit to be played on the radio. - This was everything people thought of the "Prince" character; dark & explicit. In that sense it's a perfect "Prince" album. The material was good... but delivered in a way so as to make it virtually unsaleable because fuck warner brothers was his mantra at the time.

He wanted TGE released at practically the same time as "Come"... Hence holding back TMBGITW and making TGE a far FAR more commercial album.

I'm just surprised that many people would remember it.
