Anyone else kind of hate Prince tributes in general?

I know this sounds weird but hearing other people do his songs and never getting to hear live clips of the actual Prince on these awards shows seems wrong to me. they are not celebrating the life of a great songwriter who was an average performer. They are celebrating (or should be anyway) celebrating the work of a great songwriter and performer. When Clapton dies, are people just doing to butcher "Layla" over and over again. the BET tribute might be as good as we get, but unless we see concert footage (like we did when Frank Sinatra died) than I don't see these as "proper tributes'. I hope the Revolution's tributes atleast provide nice stories and photos.

ALso, goddamn, someone please do a tribute that contains songs that are not just from the 1980's. Throw a bone to the 90's and 2000's. It is not like all this music was just dreck.

I have been watching that 2004 clip of The Question of U/ The One...awesome work. If they are not going to show footage of the actual Prince, than atleast they should do some research into his back catalogue a bit more. Someone do the Question of U.

Best tribute so far--Adele in Minnesota concert playing the "The Most Beautiful Girl in the World" video.

I personally don't watch the tributes because it's not the same to hear someone else doing Prince's music. The ONLY person I liked doing one of Prince's songs was Adam Levine doing 'Purple Rain." Would still rather Prince but Adam is the only one who did it justice in my opinion.

But does it piss you off like it does me. I watched BET tributes and Madonna's on the internet. That's all I have been able to watch. The BET had some nice moments. Madonna just ticked me off.

I totally agree. Have never liked other people singing another artist's work... especially someone that was such a great live entertainer. Video clips of prince himself and a personal story/words by someone who he touched.... a much better tribute.

Until now, they all sucked.

Some a little, some big time.

Springsteen sucked. D'Angelo sucked. Madonna almost deserves a lobotomization for what she commited.

Don't start me on the tribute records, they're all atrocious.

The only one worth of interest is by a semi-professional orchestra.
The arrangements are proof of the quality of the compositions, as they respect the original material.
And it's full of humour: I'm sure SKipper would have enjoy it.

Take The Beautiful Ones for instance. It starts as a schmaltzy hawaiian guitar muzak for elevators,
but ends faithful to the ad-lib spirit, with a sax section replicating the guitar solo.

It's certainly no London Symphony Orchestra, but you can tell it's made with love.

I agree with both of you. Why can't tributes be like the tributes for actors....scenes from their work? It's so frustrating. But I also agree that Adam Levine's PR was damn good. He got the emotional sensibility just right and yet he wasn't trying to sound just like Prince and he didn't oversing it. (So many people oversing that song, mistaking volume for emotion.)

There is a German singer called Kiddo Kat who did a good impromptu version of Kiss on a subway somehwere in Europe. You should look it up on YT (another singer, just a passenger, joined in and it was awesome). BUT, this was not a tribute. It happened and was posted on YT just a few days before he died.

Sigh.

P.S. Here's the link to Kiddo Kat: https://www.youtube.com/w...F6shrBX4L8

Yes, hate them.

Under all the circumstances, every tribute, memorial, function of every kind (and discussions about them) has made it exponentially worse. Feels like getting kicked in the chest again for at least 24 hrs. afterward.

The only thing that I appreciated (at all) was those tap dancing ladies doing When Doves Cry, and that was largely b/c I came upon it by surprise. There's something less depressing and so much more Prince-like about seeing someone do what They uniquely Do at a superior level and in good taste, instead of all this other pathetic mess.

If it's the Revolution next week I'd be right there like Warp Speed so I could tri-corder Wendy's guitar whilst leaning on every single one of Lisa's piano keys just to see how it works at the atomic level, but seeing as I don't have money to spend on Higgs Field Boson research I'll have to settle with internet reports of revolution reunions.

These tribute things keep adding insult to injury over and over, and that is likewise, not cool (especially for Prince fans who once again, have to feel like people do Not get it.)

Yes I loved the tap dancing tribute to When Doves Cry. I guess that is because they were just dancing not trying to sing it. It was awesome!!

I just remembered: there is this incredible singer who recorded himself on the webcam,
multi-tracked a capella, doing a medley.

This is incredible. Now THAT's a proper tribute.

As for the tributes before SKipper's passing,
there is this crazy japanese who replicated the Lovesexy tour,
brass bed and all. Anyone remembers his name?
Can't find his video on YT.

I agree. They have all totally missed the boat by not including actual video performances of prince himself. The montages they could have done would have been epic. I would have probably lost it completely but it would have made any tribute so much better. I'm going to the revolution show next wknd but I wrestled with that after it was announced. I couldn't imagine it without him. But in the end I felt they would get it right if anyone could.

Beyond what they did on BET, I don't need to see any more. Wish I could hear The Revolution play at First Ave, but I'm in Cali & just can't swing it. The tributes will surely keep coming, & they'll mean well, but they're gonna feel meh to me. Hope the main tribute concert the family is throwing goes well & is awesome though!! biggrin

All I've wanted is a Memorial. I don't want a tribute, someone else performing Prince's music does not help. These tributes don't do anything but remind me all the more of what we are missing, which is Prince.

Have not liked any tributes so far to me VH1 and BET were not good, with the exception of the BET ending with Sheila E and Mayte etc was done nice and I felt as good as a tribute could get.
Oh but they bring on the tears and it really makes you miss Prince that much more.
I did see a sax video by Eric Leeds?? Done as a Trib oh that was sweet but swear the sax was crying too...

Kind of, yeah. I mean, I appreciate the effort and the respect behind them but they are difficult for me to watch. Why do I watch, then? I feel compelled I guess, curious to some degree, but they make me miss Prince so much, even more than usual while I'm watching them and they remind me that he is really gone. Just the whole reason for them being, saying goodbye to Prince. Immediately after Prince passed, I think I was in shock and in information -gathering mode, just kind of reading stuff like a robot. But it was when I saw those purple lights across the world, that I felt my heart really begin to break and that's when the tears really began. So beautiful, so respectful but the reason they were there. . . Just felt so final and real.

We all want the stuff that's found in our wildest dreams. . .

As far as Purple Rain being covered, suffice to say it gets tiring and no one can do it justice. However, I recall seeing this clip from Romania X Factor before Prince passed away and loved the girl's interpretation of it. Here's a link http://www.dailymotion.co...eo/x46i8cm

As far as the past tributes, the only two tributes I loved were from Sheila E and the Dixie Chicks. Here's hoping the public memorial will have great tributes.

Honestly, I think it would just be nice if all the associated artists put their differences aside and we just got ONE solid tribute. I'm echoing what I've said in another thread. I think it's a bit irritating that there are SO MANY "tributes". It's just messy. I went to the one in L.A (even though shortly after attending I realized it was too soon for me) and was a bit dissapointed. I tried to stay positive about it because I knew it was done for him, but is was kinda...meh. The ones that tore it up were the NPG and Stevie Wonder (for the few bars of PR that he was able to sing-someone was whispering the words to him while he sang. Not fussing, I was just confused). Cassandra was amazing. There was also some guy (I don't remember his name) that performed and was reading off of his Ipad most of the time. He had great energy, but how in the HELL do you not know the lyrics to 'Baby I'm a Star' or "DMSR"?
Like, what!???...Also, I don't understand how the same 10 songs are the only ones being performed over and over again...

I want to see the Revolution but I don't have the means to go.
